FROM THE DESK GF THE COMMANDING CFFICER The cruise of the USS DALE to the Western Pacific in 1966 was an important event in the lives of all who sailed in her. We joined Task Force 77 at a time which historians may very well call the turning point in struggle for freedom by the people of South Viet Nam. We served with the other United States and Allied Armed Forces present in Southeast Asia as apotent reminder to the North Vietnamese Government that free world nations would not permit evil and aggression to triumph over freedom and justice. This book will remind us of those times and help us to remem ber friends and shipmates It will also help to bring closer to those who waited for us at home the experiences we had while we were away To those men of DALE who are responsible for preparing this book so that we all may have areminder of the cruise I want to say Thank You and well done Captain D A Webster USN D' N

THE EXECUTIVECFFICER f WESTPAC is many things to many people. It is places, people anda responsibility, many of the places are exotic and ,interesting while others are dull. Many of the people are friends and-allies, others are not. y i u Most of all, though, WESTPAC represents aresponsibility: our responsibility to provide the support and stability which is favorable to the growth of freedom and which the process of peaceful change can ultimately take the place of violence andforce as the means of change . r i g This book is directed primarily to places and people--DALE, shipmates, ports and friends, but underlying all these we cannot forget the responsibility. It has been aprivilege to sail with the men of DALE who have accepted and discharged this responsibility so outstandingly. To families and friends, I hope this book will give you some idea of the meaning of WESTPAC and a feeling of deep pride in those who served in DALE there. Commander T. I. Kolstad, USN
