Subic was not exactly the garden spot of the world. The climate was horrible, either too wet or too hot or both. The town of Olongcpo left much to be desired. But it was not the Tonkin Gulf and it ment a res- pite from the one-in-three watches and a chance to get off the ship. wi' The Navy Recreation Facility at Grande Island was the scene of two fine ship's parties. Things got a little wild at times after the thirty-five day at sea periods and Chief Mercer wasn't the only one to take an unscheduled swim. W ,,., fy ,V I f i flaw a f v ., -f, . Hong Kong is one of the finest liberty ports in the world, and we were lucky enough to spend six days there. The impressive View from the Peak, the lights of Kowloon at night, rickshaws and beautiful Tiger B alm Gardens make this a fascinating place so different f r o m any other. It is a city of contrasts, from expen- sive homes and modern apartments to the float- ing Village of Aberdeen. A vis-it none of us will soon forget.
