I Radar was one of our most important tools and necessary to the completion of our mission on most of the assignments we met through the cruise. It Wasn't enough that it worked but it had to operate at peak de- signed efficiency at all times in order for the ship to do thejob in an outstanding man- ner. The ET's duties weren't confined to the at sea periods, however. At every port the ET working party could be seen carrying scores of scopes, meters, and the like to a tender for calibration. 5

It's difficult to imagine where we would have been without the signalmen or radiomen, for time and time again they delivered the messages that sent us on a new course or speed or even to a new area to take part in a different assignment. The signalmen met with awide variety of tasks throughout the deployment from the boring days on SAR or picket station when we were operating independantly to the action packed watches- during our periods with the Oriskany. Meanwhile, the radiomen were sending and receiving thou- sands of messages in the routine profes- sional manner that had become standard aboard DALE. 1 42 A
