LCDR L. J. HOLLOWAY LCDR R R TARBUCK WEAPONS OFFICER The New Navy , Today's Navy ,the Mod- ern Navy , these are phrases we all hear quite a lotg what do they mean?Change. The navy of today is in a state of rapid revo1ution,from the weapons systems employed to the engineering systems used to propel our ships. Nuclear power for naval vessels was considered to be a distant develop- ment only fifteen years ago. It is here t od ay. DALE's guided missile system was undreamed of only twenty years ago, as were the high per- formance aircraft that it defends us against. The new, modern navy, so tipified by DALE's complex engineering and weapons systems needs a new type navyman to operate it. This is as true of the naval officer as it is ofthe rest of the ships crew. He must be familiar with these systems as well as being the capable mariner J ohnPaul Jones referred to two hundred years ago. This is a tall order, but DALE's Officers have proven to be equal to the challenge. In nearly every case he is an experienced proffessional at his job. The average time in service is over seven years. What does WestPac mean to him?Naturally, It means a long separation from his family and loved ones, but it also means a chance to do the job he'sf been trained and is being paid to do. It is a welcome opportunity.
