Far above the universe, Amid the myriad stars, Two brighter stars, their lights disperse, Their memory warms our hearts. These two bright stars whom God has called, To brighten up the sky, Their youthful warmth once filled our halls, And made our class rooms bright. Although they now have left this land, Their memory still warmly glows: These two bright stars forever stand, As our dear classmates, Carol and Ioe. by Sharon Schubert N . ..., vi M 2 ' y .x -. Now that one year has elapsed under a very much changed educational organization, we must pause and consider the merits of the new arrangements and the weak points still existing. We have no direct tangible evidence as yet whereby we can declare the pupils are making greater progress this year than in preceding years, but teachers believe this to be true. The testing program this spring may answer this question for us. We do know, however, that teaching conditions for both teachers and students are much improved. The schools of the nation have been sub- jected to much criticism since the advent of the Sputnik. We-believe most of this crit- icism to be unfair and not applicable to our schools. For example, our science and math- ematics programs are very complete. We are teaching no subjects which can be classified as worthless to the individual. We do accept the challenge to concentrate our efforts on finding the best method of teaching our diverse student population so that all will be given the opportunity to secure the maximum benefits from their education. CAROL CLAY D. V. Iohnson THE PRINCIPAL OF D. C. H. S. GREEIS YOU. . . A school is only what the school board, teachers, students, parents, and community make it. The whole purpose of a school is to educate the youth of that community to take their place in the world. The kind of job the school does is reflected in the type of citizens it produces. According to some national figures, who cite the lack of scientists, juvenile delinquency, etc. , the schools are not doing an adequate job. However, let us ask the question: What makes a good school? Now again read the first sentence above. We are all proud of our new building. The community has done its part, and from now on it is up to the rest of the groups, working together, to do the rest. Many improvements have been made and many more will be made in the future with each group's cooperation. F. L. Verdun MARLENE STUCKEY This year our office has had two secretaries. Mrs. Carol Clay has been Mr. Verdun's secretary. Miss Marlene Stuckey, a recent Dakota graduate, has been Mr. Iohnson's secretary. They both have been efficient and have car- ried out their duties effectively. MR. llARUl.D NllfDlfRlk'll'fIlTR MISS BERNADTITTE A. LONLSAWA MR. LORAN R. HOEFLE MRS. He was aided by Vice-President Gary Rlemer, Secretary Iudy Schadewaldt, Treasurer Neva Goeke, and Reporter Ioyce Melnert. This year there were 59 travelers. During this part of our journey we were joined by Iim Krull, Barbara Ienkins, and Janice Heldenrelch. Tony Stampfli, Marllyn Wilson, Carol Newburg, lim Krull, and Barbara Ienkins left us for new adventure elsewhere. This year found us a busy group of money makers. zfmior ear We began our third year on our tour Around the World with 55 enthusiastic students. After hearing of our world wide travels, Lynn LaMont and Marjorie Mclntyre jolned us along with Don Mensen, who rejoined us to finish his tour Around the World. That year the Big Five Powers were: President-Ianice Heldenrelch, Vlce President-Carolyn Coleman, Secretary-Carol Ploss, Treasurer-Sandra Lawver, and Reporter-Patsy Klever. As we went through our third year of travels, we had the pleasure of presenting a smash hlt play, Take Your Medicine. We were quite busy getting ready for our night ln Hawall, as our Prom theme was Hawaiian Sunset. We also Published the TATTLER. The arrival of our class rings was the hlgh- light of our year. We owe the success of our third year of travels to Mrs. Lycan, our sponsor. enior ear As our voyage came to an end, we discovered that a few of our fellow travelers had fallen off the ship. They were Gary Rlemer, Norma Webster, Alvlna Buss, and Iudy Miley. Hal Anderson and Don Hansen had joined us to help to complete our trip. This year we proudly presented the play Keep Movln'. To record our four year journey, we published the TALEBEARER. This year was also filled with hard work to ralse money to finance our Senior Trip. The Big Five Powers for this year were: President-Lee Vehmeler, Vlce President-Ronald Adolph, Secretary-Carolyn Coleman, Treasurer-Donald Mensen, and Reporter-Shirley Hillman. But the boys did as well as they could. There were only 23 boys out for football, and only 12 of them had ever played football before this year. We won one, tied one, and lost 5 varsity games. The Fresh-Soph. lost all three of their games. At a special meeting of the players after the season was over, Harry Dailey was voted to be the outstanding player of the year. ROW 1: B. Spelman, L. They played in the Durand Holiday tournament, bowing out in the first game to a fighting Durand team. In the second game, Dakota lost to anaggressive Pecatonica team. They were eliminated in the first round of the Stephenson County Tournament by a powerful Lena team. One of the most exciting games of the season was a thrilling 52-49 loss to Pearl City. At the half, the score was 31-23 in favor of Pearl City. Dakota came back in the third quarter and outscored Pearl City 20-8. In the final quarter, the game was almost even: but Pearl City pulled away to win by 3 points. No one was in their seats when the final buzzer sounded. KNVTELING: R. This year the Annual Staff consisted of seventeen members who worked hard to plan and prepare the TALEBEARER. Although the work was tedious and sometimes difficult, we had a lot of fun doing it and hope you, the viewers, have as much fun looking at it. The Staff would also like to thank the sponsor, Mr. Campbell, for his assistance and guidance in preparing the TALEBEARER. The group has just completed mimeographing the paper and is in the process of stapling. fltffif- SLM The TATTLER staff of 1957-58 worked very hard to keep the students informed on school events and activities. During the year we published 17 editions of the TATTLER. Early in the year we launched a campaign to sell ads to the local merchants to help finance our paper. We sold subscriptions to students, and we also sold individual copies. All funds earned from the sale of TATTLERS will be used next year to help finance the TALEBEARER. When we published the Christmas edition, we had a party for the whole staff in the cafeteria. The staff members received their pins at this party. Each member has a pin to designate the position held on the staff. Two of our staff members moved to other schools during the year. They were Mary Koester and Bruce Doty. Carol Lamm joined the staff to fill one of these vacancies. We, the members of the TATTLER staff, would like to thank Mr. Campbell for his time and able assistance spent in helping us publish the TATTLER. We wish good luck to next year's staff in publishing the 1958-59 edition of the TATTLER. ROW 1: I. Holverson, Art Editor: L. Bordner, Feature Editor: L. The play is centered around Dr. Bill Jackson, who got into a terrible jam when he and his fiance, Angela Warren, arrived in town and found that Angela's wealthy, cranky uncle, Henry Dodson, was in the hospital. When Angela introduced Bill as Doctor Iackson, Uncle Henry thought that he was a surgeon, and no one corrected him because he promised them 350,000 for the first life Bill saved. Womack, was presented by the Senior Class on November 7 61 8, 1957. Trouble starts when a trombone-playing Professor Randolph comes to the Baldwin home to spend the entire summer. The Baldwins are away for the summer: therefore, their daughter, Anne, and her house guest, Iune Harris, have to put up with him. To make matters worse, Iune's brother, Rush, decided to pay them a visit with his Liquid Power and immediately takes over the house for a laboratory. After the house becomes overrun by a snooping detective, a gossiping neighbor, a mysterious young girl selling soap, a complaining maid, and a strange woman who insists she has rented the Baldwin home, Anne finally manages to remove her house guests and her parents return to a peaceful home. 5 I ' , i L1 . - , 5 ..
