The long-suffering faculty with apprehension groanedg The Community endured itg the upper classmen moaned. A kindly smile of favor was given by the Prof. Which pleased us very greatly although the rest did scoff. How vast the field of knowledge to every Freshie seemed, A bit of understanding at last so brightly beamed. And day by day the teachers in every single way, Tried hard to make us feature that studying oft did pay. Your earnest help, Oh, Faculty, we never shall forget For through your toil and patience our true success we've met. In every undertaking our class would always try, To carry on the honored work for our Dakota High. Each year in all activities, we earnestly have sought To ever keep our noted school with greatest honor fraught. In basketball and parties, too, we always had 'our fun. We hope when we have finished school you'll say it was well done. NVhen our dear old graduation at last is past and gone May none of us to right be blind but each his work push on. Along our separate paths of life we'll each one seek for fame, For everyone of us alone will truly play life's game. VVe,ll surely try to keep our lives forever pure and whole. And upward climb the hills of time until we reach our goal. PARTIES On Friday night Octobr 29, the Sophomores and juniors entertained the Freshmen and Seniors at a Hallowe'en party held at the D. C. H. S. Gym. This was the first all class party of the school term and took the form of a gypsy conclave. Everyone came dressed as a hobo or gypsy. After many obstructions in entering the building, one first noticed the excellent decoration for the occasion. Many interesting games were played after which lunch was served. The second all High School party was held on February 11. The party was given by 'the Freshmen and Seniors. The only prize awarded was to Mr. Alleman for his art in sculpturing an animal out of a given wad of gum and a tooth pick. Many other interesting games were played after which lunch was served. The Freshmen will long remember this party as the heavy rains slightly bleached their green color. 1.l . SUMMER How beautiful is the rose, and how sweet The perfume it sheds as the summer breeze Gently lifts its petals. In green leafed trees Birds are twittering, safe from the sun's heat. They chatter gaily in their cool retreat. Through the bright sunshine the industrious bees Are carrying honey to their hives. The leaves Are whispering to downy clouds that fleet Across the sky. What a beautiful day Is to-day! Everything seems to be glad. I am happy, for who could be downcast When all of nature is so bright and gay? Come, join the tune of summer, don't be sad. All recognized hig-h schools, junior high schools, academies and other schools of their equivalent which are located in the United States or in its possessions are ele- gible to enter this contest. This company offers a bronze medallion to the winner of each school. Velda Mc- Cauley won this year with the essay, Lincoln, the Man of Quality. Honorable men- tion was given to Mary Barker's essay, Lincoln, the Literary Artist. Lincoln, the Man of Quality The heights which are reached by great men are not reached by sudden flight, but while others are sleeping, they are toiling upward. In spite of the hardships of life which Lincoln incurred, as a youth he laid the foundation of a character upon which he built for himself a name which time cannot erase and which strikes a key- note off love and admiration in the heart of every American citizen. The character of Lincoln, rather than anything he did, makes secure the place which he holds and will continue to hold in the history of mankind. At the base of his nature, in the tap-root and very fiber of his being-, pulsed a fidelity to truth. He was proverbially honest in all of his achievements-clerk, sur-- veyor, lawyer and politician. His honesty became a by-word among his friends. Abraham Lincoln was a synonym for honest dealing. ' His scrupulous honesty was proved by an incident occurring when he was a clerk in a store at New Salem. He found that he had overcharged a customer six and one- fourth cents. To rectify this mistake he walked three miles to return the money. Another time he found that he had given a customer only four ounces of tea instead of eight which she had paid for, so he took the four ounces to her the next morning when he discovered his mistake. As a lawyer, Lincoln would often admit that he did not know enough about the case, and would not go ahead with it, pretending that he knew something about it as many others would have been inclined to do. The simple words I do not know are among- the hardest to pronounce in the English language, but Lincoln used them free-- ly so that he might be honest and true. One man classified him as being too per- versely honest to be of any use to a client who was not exactly honest. Lincoln's sterling practical sense, which went straight home to the essential point in everything he was considering, marked him as original. His thoughts, his manner, his address were eminently his own. He always judged things for himself and was not easily inHuenced by other's adverse opinions. Lincoln showed a dash of shrewdness, a quickness of wit, and a power of persua- sion. In politics he had a sense of what the other fellow would probably do, and thus could get ahead of him. One time in a legislature campaign some of the people wanted Lincoln to consent to a bit of log rolling which he considered wrong, and he broke forth in an indignant refusal that the legislators never forgot. This was a convincing demonstration that you could not buy Lincoln. The simplicity in Lincoln's talk and manners is striking. He was not a follower of glory, but rather of duty. When he was first elected president, his cabinet of- ficers were amazed to find a president who was so simple and good, loving everyone with the same simple earnestness. In his speech, he was so simple and clear that everyone understood it. His Gettysburg Address is an example of his simple, clear, exact and direct manner of talking. Every word possesses a volume of meaning. S1927 Page twenty-one THE TALEBEARER Lincoln did not vvear one garb as an official and another as a citizen. He was modest and unassuming always admitting that he should be learning more. He was interested in his profession and had a reverence for it. It was his desire that throug-h it he might serve men, free the oppressed, and bring happiness. Lincoln didn't love money or riches. He often served people as an act of benevo- lence and took no reward. His whimiscal humor often caused him to define wealth as a Hsuperiiuity of what we don't need. Pecuniary rewards occupied a minor place among his incentives to activities. Other lawyers accused him of keeping the prices down because he was willing to work for such a small sum. One day a widow whose cow had been run over by a railroad train came to Lin- coln for help. The railroad company, knowing of Lincoln's power, sent an agent to offer him five hundred dollars to take the case. Lincoln, however, had promised the widow. The agent replied that the widow could not pay him any money. No, thundered Lincoln, I'll not go back on her. I will take her case, and, moreover, I'll win it. He did win as he had said. Another quality of Lincoln's character was his keen sense of humor. His ability at story telling' often hindered him in his work, for everyone stopped work to listen to him. In the evenings at New Salem everyone would gather in the store to listen to Abe's stories. As a lawyer he would usually use a joke or story to get people to think as he did. He was always good-natured and could take a joke on himself. In debates with Lincoln, Douglas tried to make out that Lincoln was insignificant, but Lincoln took it all good-naturedly and would turn right around and praise Douglas. Lincoln loved the people as shown by his freeing the slaves. Their sympathies were his, and their interests were a common stock with his own. The people trusted him and placed all confidence in their Honest Abe'. The children loved him: and after he would return from an absence, they would run to their homes joyfully crying, Mr, Lincoln is come! In one of his debates with Douglas, he noticed a little girl pushing her way through the crowd going to a store on an errand. When Lincoln was told that she was an orphan, he slipped a dime into her hand. I don't supose the little girl ever for- got this simple act of sympathy and kindness. This seems a small thing, but still some of the simplest things of life are the greatest ones. One day when he was in New Salem, he noticed a girl who wished to get to the next train but had no way of getting her trunk to the station. He manfully should- ered the trunk and carried it to the train. The people were very much amused to see Abe toting the trunk down the street, but admired his act of kindness, Lincoln always possessed a tender feeling toward the weak and needy. He was never too busy to help a beginner out of a tight place. Perhaps the next best to his genuine sympathy was his advice to work, work, work! His sympathy and kindness extended not only to man but also to birds and ani- mals. One day as he was riding along- the road, he heard some birds crying. He dismounted and found that they had fallen from their nest. He replaced them and rode on. Lincoln was very seldom wrathful or passionate. None were his enemies unless they were intended to be enemies of the human race. He was mild and forgiving. The same sweetness of character and sympathy were shown in a thousand ways to the people who came to the White House on little personal errands, to the boy who wanted a commission, or to the stranger who came in from mere curiosity. Abraham Lincoln was honored as a private citizen, happy in his domestic rela- tions, successful as a statesman, and an avowed Christian. His reliance was in God. He said, When I stood on the battle field of Gettysburg, I was deeply impressed, and I gave my heart to Christ, and I can now say that I do love my Savior. Against his pure moral character even his bitterest enemies could not truthfully utter a word. Armed with a single purpose, Lincoln worked until his goal was reached. He was steady in storms, calm in victory, and is known as the true Father and Savior of our country. He possessed tenacity of purpose, he had the foresight of a prophet, and he desired liberty for all men. Velda McCauley, '27. 1 9 2 7 +5-3?3+-as-+V+-9:??l55e455i PQEQIK-5? Ths one act play pictures very vividly how a story grows. Mr. and Mrs. Fallon had gone to the fair and were ready to go home when Jack Smith came by. He was going to the meadow to make hay and accidentally left his hay fork at an apple stall. Bartley Fallon, wishing to be kind, took the fork and started to find jack Smith. Some of the people of the village saw him and told someone else that Bartley Fallon was after jack Smith with a hay fork. One person added his bit to the story and said that Jack Smith had been killed by Bartley Fallon. OUR WURK GANG Each year the student council tries in some way to make improvements at the gymnasium. This year's job was a real task and required the co-op- cration of the community as well as the whole student body. After the dig- ging out and cementing of the floor of the dressing room so that it was pos- sible for the athletes to stand erect, new steel lockers were installed. The work was done after school by the boys of the school and men of the community who donated their services. To assist in this work the girls did their bit by furnishing sandwiches. llf:': mme, Q 1 1 9 2 7 Page twenty-five THE TALEBEARER l THE TALEBEARER GYM Perhaps the most popular building in the town of Dakota is the gym. Even though the scores were not all in our favor, the team kept up its record of good sportsmanship. The opening game of the conference season was on December 10, with Durand High School teams. The lightweight team played the Durand lights, leading them throughtout the game and closing the game with a score of 7-5 in Dakota's favor. The next game of the evening was between the heavyweight teams of the two schools. Dakota again kept the long end of the score and the game ended with a Hnal score of 12-5 in Dakota's favor. The second game was with VVinslow at VVinslow on December 17. The second team bowed to defeat with a score of 10-7 at the close of the game. However, the first team came back in the second game of the evening and won the game on free throws. The final score being 3-2. On January 7, our teams journeyed to Durand where the lights played a very close game. The score at the half being 9-5 in favor of Durand. The local boys found the basket, however, in the last half and closed the game with a score of 10-9 in favor of Dakota. The first team then matched up with the Durand team, and after a hard struggle on the large iioor of Durand's new gym, they lost the game by a score of 17-11. The next Friday night Jan. 14 the Orangeville Pickerings our old rivals came to Dakota seeking victory. Although the Dakota lights swamped the Orangeville seconds under a final score of 8-3, the big battle of the evening favored Orangeville. The score at the half was 4 up, but the Pickerings came back strong in the last two periods of the game and brought their score ahead, finishing the game with a score of 10-7. The most exciting game of the season took place on January 21, with Pearl City at Pearl City. This was a thrilling game with the score standing 4-1 in Dakota's favor at the half. Only after a hard fight were the boys de- feated in a three minute over time game by a score of 10-8. While the first team was bent on defeating Pearl City, the second string of men were practicing for their return game with VVinslow on January 28. They were out for revenge and showed their ability by swamping their op- ponents under a score of 7-6. The same evening the first string local quintet defeated the Winsloxv team by a score of 26-14. Un February ll, the teams again met the Orangeville men on the Orangeville floor. The lightweight team won their battle by a score of 15-12. The second game was a real battle, but Orangeville managed to keep the long end of the score, and the game closed with a score of 35-19 in their favor. On the following Friday evening February 19, the Dakota seconds played the Dakota Boys' School and again won a battle by a score of 12-0. On the same night the Pearl City crew came to Dakota seeking another victoryg but, due to the local boys' teamwork, their plans were shattered, and the game was won by Dakota with a score of 24-19. 7535? -+4-ref-5 he 1 9 2 7 Page twenty-eight THE TALEBEARER The next Friday night February 26, the team participated in the County tournament at Orangeville, and played the opening game of the tournament with Pearl City. After a very hard battle they were defeated by a score of 13-12. The next night, they played'VVinslow for third place in the tournament but were again defeated. The score at the half was 11-6 in favor of VVinslow and 21-13 in their favor at the close of the game. TRACK Because of the necessity of sending this edition of the Talebearer to the press before the track team has taken part in any contest we can only give a schedule of the events to take place later in the season. If no outside factors interfere with the present plans, the first event of the track season will be an inter-society Field and Track meet to be held on the school campus, Friday May 6. There is keen competition between the two Literary Societies and a close contest is expected. The Annual Stephenson County Field and Track meet will be held on May 14, at Lena. ' Another event of this season will be a duel Track and Field meet with Durand to be held on May 21, at Durand. This will be an interesting event as Durand and Dakota are close competitors in athletic contests and maintain a record for clean playing and good sportsmanship. Who's Who ln Track Ralph Moss may be big, he may be heavy, gravity may have a great ef-- fect on him, but he sure can vault over the bar. If Clifford Welling ever gets his hand on the moon. Look out!
