Would sum up the 1982 Women’s Soc- cer season. Coached by Paul Lehmann, the Lady Warriors battled to a respectable 5-7 season in their first year of league competition. Since most of the team will be here for another year, hopes are high for a much improved season in 1983. Athletics 59 An Improved Season The 1982 Men’s Soccer team recorded one of its best records in years. Led by co-captains Mark Bersani and Leo Sammon, the team exhibited tough play against more powerful oppo- nents. With thoughts towards next year, the coach hopes that more reserves will give the team a better season. The team struggled around the .500 mark all sea- son with a lack of depth being the main reason for the performance by the team. Rookie coach, Diane Cahill, knows the key to success in the future will be this year’s high school graduates that are being currently recruit- ed from Western New York area high schools. 74 Athletics Row 1: Winnie Sullivan, Brenda Hamilton Row 2: Donna Gulick, Heather Doyle, Siobhan Farrell Row 3: Jill Kozlowski, Rich Scaffcr; Athletic Director Missing: Anne Marie Hauptner, Mary Killbridge, Nancy Benington, and Amy Newton Women’s Basketball Daemen 49 Keuka 70 Daemen 45 U.B. 72 Daemen 65 Ryerson 64 Daemen 57 Alfred U. 65 Daemen 54 Niagara College 42 Daemen 59 Fredonia 65 Daemen 50 Buffalo State 56 Daemen 89 Pitt Bradford 52 Daemen 36 J.C.C. 65 Daemen 78 N.C.C. 16 Daemen 45 Oswego 71 Daemen 43 Ryerson 44 Daemen 70 Houghton 37 Daemen 48 Niagara College 50 Wins 5 Losses 19 Athletics 75 Men’s Basketball The 1982-1983 Men’s Basketball team ex- ploded out of the lockeroom, winning their first two games in a row. S.A. made positive steps advocating for the entire student popula- tion of Daemen. The Association spon- sored many activities including Super September Weekend, Winter Week, and Spring Week, along with the Christmas Semi-formal and “Pink Panther Night.” S.A. is also in charge of date selection in the beginning of every semester, which by the way, ran extremely well this year. And, the Student Association is also in charge of distribution to the many campus orga- nizations, their budgets for each semester. The funding for these, as well as the camp- us movies held each weekend, along with contributions for the new vans, some ath- letic equipment, a school sound system, and a copy machine for use of Campus Organizations, is where the Student Ac- tivity fee monies that each full-time stu- dent pays, is going towards. Distribution of money and planning of campus-wide activities is only one component of the Student Association. The Summit would like to congratulate the Student Associ- ation for a job Well Done! Working for the Students 102 Orgamzations Commuter Council “Moving up fast in Campus Life” Commuter Council at Daemen has vir- tually sprung up from nowhere and begun to take an important place in their role in campus life. IV Summer Orientation livra Summer Orientation is an annual event sponsored by Student Affairs, Admissions, and the Student Associ- ation welcoming all new freshmen and transfer students to Daemen. The traditional four-day event is held at the end of July, and is filled with long hours of new information, introductions to new faces, and most of all a lot of fun. Super September Weekend “Welcome back everyone!” The first weekend of the Fall semester each year annually is the date for “Super September Weekend,” and this year’s events ran from Sep- tember 2nd—5th. Highlights of the 1982 week- end were; Punk night at the Rat, Picnic at Bea- ver Island, and “Beatles’ Night” featuring the band “Switch.” 142 Activities Parent’s Weekend Parent’s weekend this year was held October 2nd—4th and was a huge success. An unex- pected large turnout helped make this one of, if not the best family weekend Daemen has ever had. Highlights of the weekend were; German Beer Fest on the front lawn. Home women’s soccer game against Buffalo State, Semi-for- mal dinner — dance Saturday, and champagne brunch on Sunday morning after mass. It just so happened this year that Mother Nature graced us with a picture perfect fall weekend to put the finishing touches on an altogether won- derful weekend. Activities 143 “A Time For Family F.U.B.A.R. Do you know what that means? In breaking tradition of Phi Beta hosting the tradi- tional F.U.B.A.R. the Senior Class successfully held the event on Saturday, October 30. A record crowd clad in their traditional Halloween apparrel rock, rolled and partied to Buffalo’s own Voyager. An ac- curate account of people totally F.U.B.A.R.ED is unavailable at this time. Activities 145 146 Activities .............The Monkey House Welcome to the Monkey House Plays at Daemen The twelve member cast of Daemen College theatre department, who partici- pated in the production taken from Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.’s book Welcome to the Mon- key House, put on a wonderful perfor- mance for the campus community. The story, that is at times a bit confus- ing, yet often very funny, was presented in late October, 1982. The cast consisted of: Joe Lein, Paul Michael, Stephanie Doyle, Theresa Di- Muro, Greg Belter, Jeff Hodge, John Jar- zynski, Gina Armenia, Cyrene Esposito, and was directed by Ms. Rosalind Cramer. Activities 147 Activities 149 .......Welcome to the Monkey House. Campus Ministry “The Spiritual Aspect of Campus Life i Activities 151 The Campus Ministry team, headed by Fr. Donald Measer and Sr. Anne Marie Ball, focuses on the spiritual life of the community here at Dae- men. Liturgy is held weekdays in the chapel in Dun Scotus, and weekends in Schenck Lounge. But this is not the main emphasis of the Cam- pus ministry program. The team offers a variety of programs such as the mini series entitled “Fully Alive”, to all students. Also, campus ministry pro- vides counseling and support for students. The folk group is another branch of service of the Campus Ministry offices. Focus: Community...... that's what it’s all about. 52 Activities Daemeirs Ice Rink In mid-December 1982, the colleges’ department of Stu- dent Affairs embarked upon the construction of an ice skat- ing rink for the winter months here in Buffalo. Enlisting the services of Sigma Phi Epsilon, Ron Hunter supervised the rinks construction. The rink was completed for use during the winter months of the Spring ’83 semester; however, mother nature had planned an extremely mild winter for Western New York which did not concur with the preferred temperatures of ice skating fans. It is rumored; however that a few Daemen skaters were able to use the facility before the Spring thaw. nJau A Gigantic Sundae! “Oooo, It Was Sooo Good!” On Sunday evening, January 23rd, a huge meet- ing was called in Lourdes Lounge by the Resident Assistants of the building. When the residents ar- rived there they found not a firing squad, as many expected, but a Sixty-Foot Surprise Sundae! The monstrasity was constructed by the R.A.’s in Lourdes as an activity to help get the individual floors together. The Sundae was constructed in sixty- feet of rain gutter lined with aluminum foil, and was made of; 18 gallons of ice cream, complete with hot fudge, whip cream, bananas, and cherries. Needless to say no one walked away hungry! Activities 153 “Ground Zero” A Conscience Raising Veterans Day On November 11,1982, Daemen hosted a guest speaker. Dr. Roger C. Molander, founder and Ex- ecutive director of “Ground Zero” an organiza- tion designed exclusively to educate and inform the American public to the potential danger to the human race of the possibility of a nuclear war. Dr. Molander addressed the topic, “What are the Politics of Nuclear Warfare?”, to a packed to capacity crowd in Schenck lounge. The audience consisted of students, faculty, and administrators from all over the Buffalo area as well as the area media. The presentation given by Dr. Molander was something new and a very positive experience for the Daemen campus community, one that I am sure we would like to see much more of. 154 Activities W BNINl N.Y STATE LAV YDU MUST BE 19 OR OLDER TO PURCHASE OR DRINK ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES. PROOF1 s e YOU MUST BE TO ENTER On December 4, 1982, the age allowed by New York State law that permitted an individ- ual to purchase or consume alcoholic beverages changed from 18 to 19. We expect to see the new laws’ influences throughout the state short- ly. However, closer to home, Daemen has had to undergo certain modifications to comply with the new law. These include: More stringent proof requirements in the Rat, renovation of the Rat to include a third coral, and a strong em- phasis toward non-alcohol related functions sponsored by campus groups. The new drinking laws had a significant effect at Daemen since a good portion of the Freshmen class, the largest in the colleges' history, was considered under- age as of December 4th. Is Now The Legal Age To Drink in N.Y. Activities 155 Title III “The Grant That is Changing Daemen” The 1982-83 academic year has brought with it many changes. Among one of the changes was the notification this past fall that Daemen had been awarded the 2.3 million dol- lar Title III Grant. This grant, at present, is designed to implement seven new programs for the colleges’ benefit. They include: the Man- agement Information System, the Private Sec- tor Fund, Retention of Management, Faculty Development, New Academic Programs, a Communications Skills Center, and a Center for Professional Development. The 1982 Spring semester also brought with it new changes due to Title III that could be seen on campus. The offices of Career Planning and Placement, Counseling, and the Flousing office were moved from their original quarters to Dorm 18 East. This move, which was very controversial on the campus, made way for newly hired Title III personnel. Also, the new director of the Title III program was an- nounced; Ms. Paulette Anzelone, former Coop Director. Included on this page are the initial visual changes due to Title III. New faces, and new locations for some old faces. However, despite the problems that stemmed from the imple- mentation of the grant, it’s purpose is to help better Daemen as a whole. Now, we can only hope that it does the job that it set out to do. 156 Activities Daemen College Staff ‘A special Thanks to the many people behind the scenes who touch our lives in so many ways” Pictured below are just a few of the faces that make up an important portion of the Daemen Col- lege community. The large staff of people involved in a great variety of areas, help to make life at Daemen more pleasant. Thank you! 158 Activities Oriental Art Visits Daemen Art Gallery Daemen College’s Art Department hosted Professor Zhong Juanzhong, a vis- iting artist from Anhui, China; who showed and demonstrated his works in a three day show that started on November 15, 1982. The show consisted of waterco- lor paintings that incorporated both cal- ligraphy and landscape in the traditional Chinese way. Dr. Zohong demonstrated this precise art personally in front of his American counterparts here at Daemen. He stated that this demonstration is like the ones he teaches as Director of the In- stitute of Huang Shan School. Dr. Zhong’s trip to the United States marks a milestone in the first waves of cultural ex- change between our two countries. 162 Activities “Alice!” An Unusual Look Activities 163 at a Not so Usual Play The Daemen theatre department presented, “Alice!” based on the tale by Lewis Carroll, in the Daemen Little theatre December 9-12, 1982. The production was directed by Mr. Christo- pher Wilson, whom had directed the show twice before bringing it to the Daemen audience. The cast consisted of: Stephanie Doyle, Stephanie Harris, Anne Ruchalski, Johnathan Ryan, Paul Lehman, Jeff Hodge, Craig Palanker, and Joe Lein. Reviews of the production were very favor- able from various members of the campus com- munity. The contemporary show dealt with the tales’ characters, yet on a totally adult level with a variety of irrational and at times fright- ening twists. But; however you look at it one thing is perfectly clear — “Alice!” was a great success. Airband: Fall 1982 The 1982 Airband Contest held Friday, Novem- ber 11th, is now an annual event hosted by Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. The evening proved to be a huge success with more bands than before entering into the stiff competition of the night. Last year’s win- ners, “The Air-heads,” were able to regain their title with performances of Mega Force by 707, and I Think I’m in Love, by Eddie Money. Congratula- tions!
