Little Changes in SUMMIT Over Thirty Years When the Editor of the 1982 Summit asked me to write a few words about how the year- book has changed since 1952, I reviewed that volume of thirty years ago. It appears that I made a fatal error, for it has taken me a considerable amount of time to work my way beyond the nostalgia — the bittersweet, the humorous, and the sometimes angry memo- ries which that book triggered. However, as I reflect upon the journey into the past which was launched by this renewal of acquaint- ance with “my” yearbook — the first time I have glanced at it in at least fifteen years — maybe we are on to exactly what a yearbook is about. And, if my instincts are correct, it does not appear to me that there has been much of a change at all. In the final analysis, the Yearbook of 1952 was an expression of how we saw ourselves; those ideas, attitudes, and events which mat- tered to us; those revealing photographs and the accompanying verbiage which indicated how we wanted to remember and to be re- membered. I presume these are precisely the motivations which are directing the Yearbook of 1982. The differences will be evidence of the dif- ferences between someone who was in her early twenties in 1952 and those of you, both men and women, who are at that age now. Through presenting you, this year’s book will give evidence of both a societal and world- view radically different from 1952 and a col- lege which has evolved in response to these forces. Without having seen anything to be included in this volume, 1 feel certain that there will be significant differences in style, in presentation and emphasis of substance and of self, in choice of material to include and to omit. Nevertheless, it appears to me the essen- tial nature and purpose of a yearbook have remained constant; your view of four years in a particular place. And I wager that thirty years hence, as you review “your” yearbook, you will be amazed at how much you remem- ber and how much you revealed about your- selves and your times and this place.
