Benson 17 Little Changes in SUMMIT Over Thirty Years When the Editor of the 1982 Summit asked me to write a few words about how the year- book has changed since 1952, I reviewed that volume of thirty years ago. It appears that I made a fatal error, for it has taken me a considerable amount of time to work my way beyond the nostalgia — the bittersweet, the humorous, and the sometimes angry memo- ries which that book triggered. However, as I reflect upon the journey into the past which was launched by this renewal of acquaint- ance with “my” yearbook — the first time I have glanced at it in at least fifteen years — maybe we are on to exactly what a yearbook is about. And, if my instincts are correct, it does not appear to me that there has been much of a change at all. In the final analysis, the Yearbook of 1952 was an expression of how we saw ourselves; those ideas, attitudes, and events which mat- tered to us; those revealing photographs and the accompanying verbiage which indicated how we wanted to remember and to be re- membered. I presume these are precisely the motivations which are directing the Yearbook of 1982. The differences will be evidence of the dif- ferences between someone who was in her early twenties in 1952 and those of you, both men and women, who are at that age now. Through presenting you, this year’s book will give evidence of both a societal and world- view radically different from 1952 and a col- lege which has evolved in response to these forces. Without having seen anything to be included in this volume, 1 feel certain that there will be significant differences in style, in presentation and emphasis of substance and of self, in choice of material to include and to omit. Nevertheless, it appears to me the essen- tial nature and purpose of a yearbook have remained constant; your view of four years in a particular place. And I wager that thirty years hence, as you review “your” yearbook, you will be amazed at how much you remem- ber and how much you revealed about your- selves and your times and this place. December 15, 1981 Patricia E. Curtis Vice President for Academic Affairs 18 Introducing: The Golden Warrior Another year, another book, but me and my buddy “The Golden Warrior” are new. We are both here to help you through the yearbook of 1982. We were created by Kathleen Kawalchyk and Margie Pan- tera. Enjoy the ride thru! w f iy? 19 Dedication In dedication to Tommy Rowan; an honor- ary fraternal brother of Phi Beta Gamma, who showed his love and concern for the students for many years. Tommy will always be remembered for the way he made us laugh and for always being there when we needed him. Love, Brothers of Phi Beta Gamma 20 Sister Angelice Vogt served Daemen College with distinction from September 1954 until her retirement in June 1981. She began as a steacher of Business Affairs and Treasurer, then as Chief Business Administrator, and finally as Vice President for Business Affairs and Trea- surer. Serving on the Board of Trustees as Secretary, Consultant and Secretary-Treasurer of the Board, her sense of values and astute business acumen were im- portant factors in the continuous growth and prosper- ity of Daemen College. During her time of service as chief fiscal officer, she saw the acquisition of the Campus apartments, the renovation of Alverno Hall, the construction of Duns Scotus Hall, Lourdes Hall and the Charles W. Wick Campus Center. Of Sister Angelice, Dr. Robert Marshall said, “Sister manifests in her daily life the Franciscan characteris- tics of peace and joy. Her calm insistence that “God will provide” is born of her love of St. Francis and of Catherine Daemen. These attributes made her a source of inspiration and encouragement to all. Her position will be filled, but she will never be replaced.” 21 Faculty and Administration Anne Sackett Secretary to the President President of Daemen College Dr. Robert S. Women’s Soccer Team tops in WNY Last year a lot of interest was generated to- ward starting a girls’ soccer team. As result, a girls’ intramural soccer program was organized. This year they became a club and gained a coach. Next year they will declare varsity status. With the exception of a few players, the rest of the team knew nothing about the game of soccer. Paul Lehmann, their coach, started from square one getting them into top physical condi- tion. Teaching them the basic skills, he then worked up to showing them how strategy was utilized during a game. Employing dedication, determination, excel- lent coaching, and spirit never ending, the wom- en’s soccer team finished their first season with a record of 5-1-1. The hard work and practice paid off. The team has the best record in the entire Western New York area. The team is look- ing toward bigger and better things: varsity sta- tus and capturing the state championship next year. Everyone on the soccer team has become more knowledgeable and improved their skill in the game of soccer. They owe it all to their coach, Paul. He has always had faith in them and his patience, dedication to the game and selfless giving of his time, and the work he put into the team paid off on the soccer field. This improvement has not been easy. Under the constant tutelage of coach Keith McFayden the Golden Warriors have responded with countless examples of dedication and determination. They win to- gether and they lose together. This year, led by the sound goaltending of Dave Chapman, Daemen scored a pair of wins against the University of Pitts- burgh at Bradford and were 6-3 victors at Utica Tech. However, even when coming up on the “down” side of many scores, this team nev- er lost its’ character. Their pride and “nev- er say die” attitude continually carried them. This, in fact, is a tribute not only to good coaching, but to the players them- selves. With almost all of this year’s squad re- turning again next year, the 1982 version should be even better. With the current program gaining inter- est, the outlook for the future seems very optimistic at Daemen. P. Korykora i i . J. Summer School Most people packed up their cars and trucks last May to head home for a nice summer vacation of lying in the sun, work- ing and relaxing from the gruesome school year. But, there were a few that knew that their “summer vacation” would be but two short weeks and then they would hit the books again for a tough, but fun filled sum- mer at Daemen College. Summer sessions began July 1 with 309 students taking classes. Senior Medical Technology majors were required to take courses during this time. In addition, for the first time. Junior Physical Therapy majors were also required to continue their education during the hot months of June, July, and August. There were other students as well who were taking courses to make the next semester a little easier, or to bring up a grade or simply to take a class for the fun of it. About 59 students took up residence in the campus apartments; the rest lived off campus. For many, it was the first experi- ence of having an apartment and being truly on their own. The experience and fun were well worth the extra efforts of living off campus. For those remaining on campus, things were a little different. The local Super Duper became a home away from home for starving stomachs as there was no meal plan provided. It was an experience learning to survive on their own cooking. Most of the week was filled with study- ing. An entire semester class was crammed into a matter of just a few short weeks. There was no time to be lazy, even though it was easy to be called away from your studies by the good weather. Even though the weeks were tough, usually the weekends were fun. They be- gan with softball games out on the front lawn. Almost everyone joined in. There were those who couldn’t hit the ball even after twenty pitches. And there were those who couldn’t catch the ball if it was rolled to them. But all in all everyone had a good time. The game was followed by a short walk to Taiwan’s “The Home of the 50c Meal” for happy hour. Then the weekend was in full swing. The summer came to an end very fast for those up here. Before we knew it, we were packing to go home. It was only a short two weeks before we would return once again to Daemen. R. Henderson 116 2nd floor: Kim Bernhardt.
