Text from Pages 1 - 156 of the 1981 volume:

A name on an application blank — a test score — a percen- tile rank — a concentration choice — so we begin. During our four years, we identify with a specific concen- tration, developing our interests and touching other fields, in the creation of a very special product, a personal project — our education. To the framework of required courses, we add those of our own choosing. Ne bring our individuality to our education and this education makes each of us more definitely an individual. A name on a diploma — but more — an individual, the lines fashioned by the studies pursued, clubs enjoyed, friendships formed — so we commence. At the beginning of the year, a very dear friend was taken from us. His name was Terry Carter. By all that knew him, he was loved and respected, just as he loved and respected us, his friends. Terry attended Daemen College in 1979-1980, and he left for New Jersey to pursue a life-long dream. While in New Jersey, Terry was killed. We will always remember Terry and the great friend he was. 5 His Friends Within each of us there are . . . Moments of truth. Times of decision, crossroads; Which affect the direction of our lives . . . Farewells are only the beginnings Whoever we are; We hold in our hearts . . . The memories of the times We have lived, and loved Today is more meaningful For it is built on .. . Who we were Where we have been . . . And the vaths We have travelled . . . 6 8 9 4 fc . u kV ■ A%.- 'V.-- fwr?! 4 IS a 17 Rebecca Bernhardt Medical Technology Bettyann Boyd History and Government Peggy Ann Barez Medical Records Michael Cudahy Physical Therapy Joanne Davis Physical Therapy Cheryl DeLuke Art 23 Linda DeRose Business Administration Joanne DeSalvo Physical Therapy John Dutkiewicz Medical Technology John DeMeo Business Administration Laura Flanagan Physical Therapy Betty Jean Gaebraith Medical Technology 26 Mark Gould Business Administration Andrea Gustafson Physical Therapy Sharon Hartney Business Administration Barbara Harvey History and Government Maria Hearty Physical Therapy 27 Marianne Hubert Elementary Education Philip M. They came on buses, in cars, on planes and trains from all directions. Orientation '80 helped the students bridge the gap between high school and college. Although the schedule included many important preparations for the coming year such as registration, the Strong- Campbell Test, and concentration meetings, there was also a chance to see the social opportunities of Daemen. A semi-formal dinner dance, a Toga party, and swimming at the 'Y' lessened the ten- sions and relaxed the atmosphere. A pic- nic at Williamsville Town Park highlighted orientation with lots of food, music, beer, and games. Many people signed up for roommates among their new-found friends and exchanged ad- dresses to fill the weeks before everyone would be back together in September. 86 tU .' i This year's Family Weekend activities had a lot for both parents and student to get involved with'. Friday nights activities included a com- bination of Family Feud Cong Show Party in Wick Social Room. As the night continued the activities moved down stairs to the Rat for a 50's party where the parents taught the students to dance and the students taught their parents the latest moves. Saturday's activities included the play ''The Miracle Worker , a football game out on the front lawn, and the traditional Cocktail Party Dinner Dance. The weekend closed with a Family Mass. 89 CraYola In November, the Daemen Theater production of The Miracle Worker” brought tears of happiness to all those who attended. The cast of the play under the direction of Ros Cramer and Chris Wilson spent many hours capturing the true lives of Helen Keller, who was played by Linda Gibson and Annie Sullivan, who was played by Rosanne Tripi. The setting: in and around the Keller homestead; Tuscumbia, Alabama, in the 1880's and briefly the Perkins Institute for the Blind in Boston, allowed the audience to capture the true feel- ings of what it was like to be a blind deaf mute. 97 The Earl Pudney Band The Earl Pudney Band turned out to be good times for everyone. Will we ever forget those nights rock'n in the Rat? Earl Pudney was made up of Mike Miskuly, Kevin Gannon, Russ Micoli, John Rose, and Paul Nobles, all residents of Daemen College. The popularity of the band was due to the closeness and participation of the campus. The band gave Daemen stu- dents a nucleus to rally around and filled the Rat with capacity crowds everytime they performed. The Earl Pudney Band was the students of Daemen and that was the most important factor. Like many other great bands of the past, the members of the EPB have gone their separate ways, but the memories they gave Daemen students will best be stirred up by the unforgettable lyrics of the War Song — I don't wanna go, I don't wanna go 100 1 ■ 104 Row 1 — Cathy Dorman, Patty Hughes Row 2 — Mary Janusz, Janna Kirchoff, Pam Barwell, Cathy Armusewicz, Mary Beth Rostiser, Kim Bernhardt Row 3 — Ann Byron, Leslie Lahn, Cindy Forkle, Patty Donato, Stephanie Harris Row 4 — Robin Arcci, Lisa Turco, Cindy Siracuse, Tammy Appleman, Susan Bahr Lambda Chi Iota This year Lambda Chi Iota Sorority, started out our year by welcoming 11 new sisters. The objective of any Greek organization is to help out both the college and outside com- munities. The first weekend of the new year we sponsored a Toga Party in the Rat with Student Life. We have also done such things as a beer blast, bear raffle, and a contest on campus to choose the male and female 10's, Most Studious, College Student Most Likely to Spend More Money in the Rat than on College Tuition, and The Best Kisser on Campus. We are also proud of our community services such as, a bake sale at Eastern Hills Mall for United Way and a donation to Children's Hospital of Buffalo when we won the Family Feud at Family Weekend. Since this year has been declared the year of the han- dicapped child we hope to do service to them. Lambda Chi Iota — helping move Daemen into the future. 105 Sigma Omega Chi This year at Daemen, Sigma Omega Chi Sorority welcomed 2 new members in the fall semester. Sigma co-sponsored a welcome back mixer along with student life, and had many successful fund raisers. Our com- munity events including holding drive with the Red Cross. We hope to continue growing in the future years at Deamen College and are looking forward to another successful year in 1981-82. 107 Row 1 — Bob Olivieri, Steve Zalewski, Dave Chapman Row 2 — Vinny Marino, Joe Donnally, Jody Fay, Steve Kirk, Jim Hockenbury, Paul Michael Row 3 — Tim A hite, Tony Taylor, Frank Saeli, Mark Alderfer, Billy Hole 108 Phi Beta Gamma ■ Phi Beta Gamma has been an active part of Daemen College since 1968. With the assistance of local Sig Ep chapters, colony officers were elected and regular weekly meetings began. The first goal was to become a charter member by April, 1981. Other goals included contributing to the Daemen Community to increase campus unity and to develop brotherhood. Starting with Daemen's first Spooky Dorm Olympics and continu- ing with Hero Haven we made our presence known. Seeing the need for athletic development, Sigma Phi Ep- silon, has started Daemen's first foot- ball sportsmanship award and built a skating rink for campus use. One of our biggest tasks is forwarding con- struction of our much needed gym- nasium. Beginning with petitions for the gym, planning the night for the first home basketball game, which almost 400 people attended and writing Daemen's first athletic newspaper we are constantly striving for excellence. The Black Student Caucus is entering its 5th year as an organization at Daemen College. Our main purpose is to in- crease the awareness of Blacks and Hispanic culture for our- selves and those around us, to provide various activities (cultural, recreational and educational) to stimulate that awareness; to educate, not only the student body, but the surrounding community on Black and Hispanic, culture, history and achievement. WIe are in number, the second largest organization at Daemen College, second only to the Student Association, in that they represent the whole student body. Our leadership capabilities have been recognized for we all are a viable and visible organization. Our motto, EMOJA (unity), is our basic theme; our concern is implementing it. We would like to thank Dorothy Brown and Elsie Ramos, who will be leaving us. Thank you for your dedication and determination in helping the Black Student Caucua to become a successful organization. You have implemented the seeds for its future. 121 Soccer As a result of the never ending support and sacrificies of many key individuals, the Daemen soccer team was able to continue manifesting school pride while experiencing the joy of athletics. There are two individuals who stand out as having given un- self essly of their time and energy. Dennis O'Keefe and Tom Collins are well deserving of this dedication. Without hesitation, these two gentlemen successfully assumed the dual responsibilities of player-coaches. This required that they not only participated in the games but also accepted the unenviable responsibility of encouraging the growth and correcting the miscues of their team peers. They proved equal to the challenges facing them and maintained a positive posture which was reflected by the player's performance. These men were more than organizers and leaders. They were friends to all con- cerned, on and off the field. They realized we were out to have a good time, sure it is nice to win, but we weren't disciplined for a loss. They knew that sports were meant for enjoyment and not for punishment, and they conveyed this in their attitude. We were a gathering of friends, some participating, others supporting; and thanks to Tom and Dennis, this worthwhile activity was able to continue. We are grateful for your service, your outstanding leadership qualities, and your untiring dedication. May you always believe in yourselves the way that all of us believe in you.
