In 1976, the college Board of Trustees voted to change the name of our college from Rosary Hill to Daemen. This formerly Catholic college for women founded in 1948, by the Sisters of Saint Francis of Penance and Christian Charity, has gradually evolved into a private, co-educational institution. The name change reflected our new image and at the same time the name chosen indicated continued awareness of the school’s origin and traditions. The name honors Catherine Daemen (1787-1858), a teacher in Holland who founded the Sisters of Saint Francis of Penance and Christian Charity in 1835. Thereafter, she was known as Mother Magdalen Daemen, and she directed the work of her Sisters in teaching and care of the sick. In 1874, the Sisters were invited to America to carry on their educational work throughout the United States, as well as in South America. The Sisters have worked in the Buffalo area for one hundred and three years. Daemen College is recognized as an independent, non-sectarian, co- educational institution in 1976. It honors a great woman, and the Sisters who have carried on her work. — Marie Fortuna Mrs. Mary Diehl has provided outstanding moral support to the staff of the Summit. Her cheerful attitude has helped us through our various crises. Beyond this, however, she has assumed much of the work normally done by the staff during the great blizzard of’77. For this we wish to thank her and dedicate our efforts in the production of this book to this fine lady. They have offered us guidance, spiritual opportunities, enthusiasm, and friendship. Fr. Don is moving on to a new position. His friends at Daemen College will remember and miss this fine man. Dennis Kelsch O.S.F.S. as the new head of Campus Ministry. 67 69 SUMMIT YEARBOOK g; •'•«§ ' I m “If you don’t know where you are going you’ll probably end up somewhere else.” The ’77 Summit has been a difficult yearbook to produce. In September an enthusiastic but inexperienced staff was assembled. This enthusiasm allowed us to do well in the sales and fund-raising efforts of this book. Later in the year, however, our inexperience caught up with us. The combination of this and the incredible Winter of’77 caused us to miss events that should have been covered, suffer cancellations and set- backs that no amount of effort could make amends for. Despite this we are proud of the efforts of all involved with this book. Seven cases were reported in a short period of time. The Erie County Health Department, in conjunction with the College Health Service, conducted a Measles Immunization Program.
