SUMMIT 1976 Rosary Hill College, Buffalo, N.Y. Volume 24 rt RIAN LIBRARY - DAEMEN COLLEGE In Memoriam Georgia Dunn, O.S.F. 1898—1975 2 Doctor of Letters Award-Commencement 1970 “A teacher affects eternity, he can never tell where his influence stops. These words from THE EDUCATION OF HENRY ADAMS might have been written as a twelve-word profile of the life and influence of Sister M. Georgia Dunn, O.S.F., Dean Emeritus of Rosary Hill College. Sister Georgia devoted her life to teaching, serving in elementary and high schools before coming to Rosary Hill in 1949 as academic dean and dean of students. For many years administrative duties demanded much of her attention, but always she found time for the teaching she loved. Sister Georgia served as Professor of English at Rosary Hill College until 1971. A graduate of Canisius College, she received her Doctor of Phi- losophy degree from Niagara University, where she was a charter member of Delta Epsilon Sigma. She did post-doctoral work at Catholic University, Columbia University and Oxford University. Studying, teaching, writing for educational and literary journals, and working in administrative capacities. Sister Georgia brought to each endeavor a vision of serving in ways designed to help create a better world. Plato said: those having torches will pass them on to others. Sister Georgia, as she passed her torch to all with whom she came in contact during many years on the Niagara Frontier and at Rosary Hill, truly affected eternity. Even though she is no longer with us, who can foresee where her influence will stop? EARLY SPRING Much talking has depressed my heart of late; So many die, for they are consecrate. The weeping willow wet in dawn's gray cold Wears now a veil of pale silk yellow gold; Around, the trees are wrapped in soft green mist. Below the halting shadow's amethyst Gives way to morning's first low level rays. First, winter's death. Then wonder of springdays! The flicker shakes his shrill arched tremolo, The husky robin answers from below, From perfumed earth, the soft bright grass in springing, Ah! after this, come death, we meet it singing. 3 'Nut makes it to the top. RHC Pinochle Club 4 Farmer Rob from Barn 93. i A time it was and what a time it was, It was a time of innocence A time of confidences. Long ago, it must be, I have a photograph. Preserve your memories, They're all that's left you. —Paul Simon Lov'Ya' Occasionally you find one friend Amid a sea of many faces Who is so genuine, so warm That no one ever replaces. —JoAnne Vandegrift It's always nice to make a friend. The educational process at work. 9 A friend is one to whom one may pour out all the contents of one's heart, chaff and grain together, knowing that the gentlest of hands will take and sift it, keep what is worth keeping and with the breath of kindness blow the rest away. — Arabrian Proverb 10 13 _ • SITTING: Steven Clippinger, James Allen — Chairperson. Bloodmobile Coffee House 78 79 83 On Valentines Day 1975, Brian Wettlaufer, Mark Kawaler, Randy Gerlach, and Robin Gabner made an attempt to break the record in the Guiness Book of World Records for marathon ping-pong playing. The attempt went for naught. The following is an editorial from a local newspaper: We hope the person who made that sick call to Mark Kawaler, one of four young people trying to beat the record for continu- ous table tennis play at Rosary Hill College is happy with himself — now that his scheme to disrupt the championship try was successful. Some wag called Kawaler during the play to inform him that his parents had been killed in an auto accident. Needless to say, the call so upset him he was unable to continue the play, and the championship try went for naught after more than 37 hours of continuous play. The quartet had been aiming for 60 hours, which is the record. - And Men Larrv s plans hit a snag I thought ex-presidents had a veto! Phi Beta Gamma Officers. Would you buy a College from this man? The year 1975 proved to be a winning season for the RHC Football team and coach Johanna Coleman. It was the potent offensive and destructive defensive lines which led the team to a 8 and 2 record and a strong second place showing in the standings. In the final game of the season - RHC vs. Medaille — after a strong defensive fight, RHC lost the championship in the final moments. 90 That time I was only an inch away. Both teams have acquired new and excellent coaches, new ideas and a sense of determination to make athletics an important part of the R.H.C. experience. This past season has been seen as the building year for both teams and expectations are high for both teams as well as the whole athletic program in the future. Although aca- demics will always be the main goal of the college, it has been recognized that athletics also has been important to the whole college experience. 93 Women's Basketball Front — Terry Donahue, Mary Black. Marshall Mr. William R. Predmore Mr. Charles J. Reedy Mr. Peter Siedlecki Mr. Claudio A. Vasquez 114 Old Dorm Life 1959—No food may be kept or eaten in the rooms. There is to be no drinking if the student is returning to campus. Room checks will take place on weekday mornings and Thurs- day nights. Pajamas may be worn in the lounges only with special permis- sion. Resident students will now dress up for Sunday dinner. Girls are allowed to visit the other dorms at night only if they are accompanied by at least two other girls. There are to be no regulations concerning sleeping during the day. As long as the girls room is in order, it is allowed. 116 I 1961—Venetian blinds should be down after dinner. Study hours are from 8 to 10 pm. Washers, dryers and hair dryers are not to be used. Sneakers may be worn to brunch on Saturday mornings. The Head Resident and the Council President may give permis- sion for anyone to leave the dormitory in slacks or bermudas. No shouting out of dorm windows. No smoking. Freshmen must have their lights out at 11:00 pm. Girls are to limit calls to 15 minutes. 117 |an A%|i I can truthfully say that since I reached the age of discretion I have consistently drunk more than most people would say was good for me. Nor do I regret it. The brew has been to me a firm friend and a wise counselor. Often the brew has shown me matters in their true perspectives. The brew has lit for me the pages of literature, and revealed in the life romance lurking in the common- place. The brew has made me bold but not foolish; has induced me to .say silly things but not to do them. Under its influence words have often come too easily which had better not have been spoken, and letters have been written which had better not been sent. But if such small indiscretions standing in the debit column of the brew's account were added up, they would amount to nothing in comparison with the vast accummulation on the credit side. —Duff Cooper Draw me another. Puppy love Sometimes it's a Witches Brew. 121 The important thing is this: to be able at any moment to sacrifice what we are for what we could become. — Charles Du Bois Here comes Lamont's valentines! 123 mmm Give a Friend a hand. Crazy Nancy We've both had our share of bad luck. 126 May the roads rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back, May the sunshine warm upon your face, the rains fall soft upon your fields, And until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of his hand, -Irish Blessing
