AD JESUM PER MARIAM T The combination of piety and professional competency embodied in the person of Bishop James A. McNulty, serves as an example for the Rosary Hill College student. His way of life is exemplified in his motto, “Ad Jesum Per Mariam.” This motto, together with the heraldic trappings of his shield, expresses the ideal, program of life, and spirit of the man. Bishop McNulty’s shield bears, on the left, the arms of the diocese of Buffalo; on the right, his personal arms. The escallop shell is a symbol of Saint James, who, legend tells us, appeared at the Battle of Clavijo, astride a white horse, to lead the Christians to victory against the Moors. Bishop McNulty, as a modern Church leader, recognizes the necessity for cooperation among men in order to achieve a new kind of Christian victory. In a recent public appearance, the Bishop stated his strongest hope: . . our city, our nation can prosper and be at peace only when we live within the framework of the law: when we acknowledge the supremacy of God and respect the dignity of every human being as a child of God. May these basic truths upon which our beloved America has thrived be our firm conviction today. .. 5
