IN MEMORIAM Mother Mary Alphonse, president of Rosary Hill College since its founding in 1948, acquired her early education at Sacred Heart Academy. Mother received her bachelor’s degree from the Catholic University of America in 1916. Subsequently she served as direc- tress and superior of the Academy of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart at Stella Niagara. From 1931 to 1946 Mother Alphonse was American represent- ative to the Mother General of the Sisters of Saint Francis of Penance and Christian Charity in Holland. In this capacity Mother traveled extensively in Holland, Germany, Brazil and the Orient. While in India Mother Alphonse assisted in the organization of a new religious order of native women. Returning to this country she continued her education and in July of 1948 when Rosary Hill College was founded Mother Al- phonse was named president. She was instrumental in the develop- ment of the college into a modern, accredited institution of higher learning. Mother Alphonse played an important role in inculcating the Franciscan ideal as the aim of the Rosary Hill College student. Mother’s life was a fulfilment of this ideal “Veritatem facientes in Caritate.” 17
