Text from Pages 1 - 106 of the 1953 volume:

THE SUMMIT ROSARY HILL COLLEGE BUFFALO, NEW YORK DEDICA TION Buffalo are very proud that our esteemed friend and counselor, the Most Reverend Joseph A. Burke, has been elevated to the rank of Bishop of Buffalo. A native of this city and an ardent champion of Catholic educa- tion, Bishop Burke will continue to protect and perfect Diocesan schools. We at Rosary Hill have always found him interested in our problems and are sincerely grateful to him for his help and advice. It is with both affection and pride therefore, that we, the second graduating class of Rosary Hill College, dedicate our Yearbook to the Most Reverend Joseph A. Burke, Bishop of Buffalo. THEME 1 .osary Hill College is so named in honor of that devotion to our Lady which, since its inception, has been a constant source of comfort and hope. It is fitting therefore, that the theme of our yearbook should be the theme on which our college was founded and is administered—the Rosary of the Seven Joys of the Blessed Virgin—the Franciscan Crown. Since the year fourteen hundred and twenty-two, this rosary has been an inte- gral part of all Franciscan communities. In that year, a novice, especially devoted to Our Blessed Mother, decided to quit the Franciscan cloister. As a layman it had been his custom to adorn Our Lady’s statue with a wreath of fragrant blossoms. Unable to continue this generous practice in the novitiate, the youth experienced so tremendous a feeling of loss that he resolved to abandon his religious vocation. As he was about to execute his decision, the Virgin Mary appeared to the young man and expressed her desire for a more lasting wreath—a crown of prayers commemorating the seven great joys of her seventy-two years. Since that mem- orable occasion, an imperishable crown has adorned Our Lady’s head. The prayers of the Franciscan Crown have fashioned a wreath befitting the Queen of the Holy Rosary. We hope that our lives may prove worthy of the theme of our yearbook, and that our prayers may become spiritual roses acceptable to her who has provided us with the Rosary. TRIBUTE TO THE STAFF By a legitimate extension, the entire class of 1953 should be designated as the staff of this year’s Summit because we have been so closely united in mutual helpfulness. Unity, we have learned, is a transcendental attribute of being. A thing is to the extent that it is one. A class realizes its own nature more perfectly when it attains the degree of unity that is appropriate to it. This unity should be that of end, of purpose. We feel we are not presumptuous in saying that our class has achieved something of this unity; for the Summit, the joint effort of the whole senior class, is patently the product of a singular unanimity of spirit, of purpose, of endeavor, and of accomplishment. The oneness of our effort has, we believe, resulted in the integrity of this year’s Summit as seen in its unity of theme, simplicity of structure and style, and the subordination of its various parts to the central effect. All of this, in turn, reflects the singleness of mind and will of a united senior class which has produced it. Mother received her bachelor’s degree from the Catholic University of America in 1916. Subsequently she served as direc- tress and superior of the Academy of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart at Stella Niagara. From 1931 to 1946 Mother Alphonse was American represent- ative to the Mother General of the Sisters of Saint Francis of Penance and Christian Charity in Holland. In this capacity Mother traveled extensively in Holland, Germany, Brazil and the Orient. While in India Mother Alphonse assisted in the organization of a new religious order of native women. Returning to this country she continued her education and in July of 1948 when Rosary Hill College was founded Mother Al- phonse was named president. She was instrumental in the develop- ment of the college into a modern, accredited institution of higher learning. Mother Alphonse played an important role in inculcating the Franciscan ideal as the aim of the Rosary Hill College student. Mother’s life was a fulfilment of this ideal “Veritatem facientes in Caritate.” 17 Reverend John B. O’Malley S.T.L., A.M., Chaplain Religion BOARD OF TRUSTEES Mother M.
