Dadeville High School’s tfi mmf' 47 th Season America’s Best Production DHS Theatre Dadeville, Alabama September 1986 to June 1987 Pa 2 Opening The music swells, the lights brighten, and the actors come to life as the curtain rises. It is Opening Day and there is much excite- ment about the season’s activities . . . The stage lights in Dadeville’s Theatre slowly fade as the curtain falls. There is a devastating silence. Suddenly, a wave of applause sweeps through the theatre and engulfs the 1987 graduating ac- tors as they come forward to take their final bows. The grand finale has come. “Drama is not only a social art, but it is also a reliable index of society’s change and a creator of cultural awareness.” As such, our society relies on its past and present to survive. The Talisman Staff is proud to capture that drama of our school at work and play with reflections of the laughter and companion- ship, the hard work and challenge, the loyalty and pride found here at Dadeville High School. May the value you have acquired here, give you cherished memories of DHS. Laura Parrott Michele Moran Editor Asst. Monday morning as students headed to class in their overalls, rope belts, and plaid flannel shirts. Why? It was “Hick” Day. Things got really sticky on Tuesday when people came to school wearing lollipops on their shirts for “Lick ’em” Day. The next day was even worse as everyone put their clothes on backwards for “Knock ’em Backwards” Day! We all tried to be more professional by wearing ties on Thursday for “Tie ’em Up” Day. The jubilant week ended with the traditional “Black and Gold” Day. The student body really showed their spirit by wearing the school colors on Friday. Action really heated up Thursday night at the bonfire and resumed with a fantastic pep rally and parade Friday afternoon. From the looks of it, Chavala was in for a fight! At 7:30 the crowd cheered as the captains went out for the toss and went wild as the band struck up “Rocky.” Halftime came and after the singing of the Alma Mater, the class maids and queen nominees were introduced. The Homecoming Court consisted of the following class maids: Freshman Melanie Johnson, escorted by Tim Rowe; Sophomore Michelle Fourtenbary, escorted by Jeffrey Kinsaul; Junior Donna Taylor, escorted by Chuck Lanford; and Senior Vickie Newman, escorted by Tommy Yar- brough. The queen nominees were the following: Kathy Gooden, escorted by Mike Griffies; Kristin Currie, escorted by Kenny Chase; and Angie Camp, escorted by David Oliver. The suspense rose as reigning queen Julie Sanders and school principal Jim Childers prepared to crown the new queen. The excitement of the oc- casion could be felt in the air. The crowd roared as Angie Camp was an- nounced the 1986 DHS Homecoming Queen. Homecoming week was topped off with the Tigers’ 17-13 victory over Chavala. Shortly after the clock ran down, the students were in line for the dance with DJ Mark Lizenby. The exhilarating dance ended at midnight and wrapped up another awesome Homecoming Week! HIGH SCHOOL Imagine Coach Perry Willis, Mrs. Elise Williams, Mrs. Sharon Dollar, and Mr. David Baker, along with other DHS graduates, cruising the “Three Pigs?” Or maybe Mrs. Mary Timberlake as Homecoming Queen of Auburn University? Better yet, Mrs. Iris Canady winner of State 4-H Dairy Foods Contest? How about Mrs. Margaret Caldwell and Mrs. Teresa Moncrief as cheerleaders, or Mrs. Raye Nell Benton as “Most Athletic?” Once, our teachers were students just like us, and their life then was admittedly different. “We were the first class to graduate on stage in the DHS auditorium,” Mr. Wyatt Davis, Math and History teacher, said. In the role of students, teachers’ behavior back in the “good ol’ days” wasn’t much different than now. “The most fun part of high school for me was getting out of school on ‘official cheerleading business’ to decorate the gym or auditorium for Friday morning pep-rallies!” said Mrs. Linda Davis, History teacher and head cheerleader in high school. For each teacher, there lingers these memories of “what was best” during high school. SHARON DOLLAR Yearbook Staff, Tiger Rag Staff, Beta Club, Girls’ State, Homecoming Maid. THE COWBOY After tying his horse in Mr. Childers’ park- ing space, the cowboy walks bowleggedly in- to D.H.S. The chattering stops when the cold steel spurs connected to the O.J. She hopes one day to make Polydent commercials. THE JOCK Whether it is shooting the hoop, throwing the tator, or slapping' one out, the jock is always participating in some type of physical activity. Known as the hearthrob in cleats, the jock is usually spending more time fighting off girls at D.H.S. than he does destroying opposing players. He hopes one day to have his picture on a Wheaties box. Page 57 Underclassmen JUNIORS We will forever remember our Junior year as the hardest ever. It was a time of taking mind-boggling tests such as the NEDT, PSAT, and the exit exam. Our teachers added to the load. In American Literature we studied Emerson, Poe, and Hawthorne. Algebra II and III did things with numbers and letters never imagined. Chemistry gave some of us our first failure! Although we did study a lot, we found time to play. As Juniors we took part in many new activities. Class rings were ordered, candy was sold for the Senior Beta Club, and the Junior Senior prom was anticipated. It was a great year, but just wait until the 1987-88 school year rolls around! Our classes seemed much harder. In English, we studied Shakespeare and in Math we studied geometric figures. Our Biology classes could be found dissecting anything from fish to birds. However, our social life was just beginning. We experienced our first taste of varsity athletics, driving cars, and dating. A lot of times were shared as we made it through our sophomore year. The memories will not soon be forgotten as we look forward to another year. Sophomore Class Officers, Top to Bottom, L to R: Rhonda McCor- mick. Rep.; Jessica Morris. This was our first year of earning credits, which meant extra studying. We were introduc- ed to poetry in a way which we never had known to exist. Algebra 1 completely baffaled us (where did the numbers go?), and Physical Science was an electrical trip. Although it was tough, the year had some compensations. We were officially part of high school, which meant we elected a homecoming maid and joined new clubs, the band, and the football team. We finally belonged. Freshmen Class Officers. At last there’s someone who’s smaller than us. This year was fantastic. We par- ticipated in Homecoming by building a float and many of us became Jr. High football players, cheerleaders, and marching band members. Our studies became more difficult though. We prepared ourselves for Algebra I by taking Pre-Algebra and studied all about rocks in Earth Science. We became more familiar with our nation of old in American History and learned how to use our language in English grammer. What an exciting year we had! Eighth Grade Officers. It was different, and even difficult at times. However, we learn- ed to adapt and to become a vital part of Dadeville High School. The experience can only be lived and not explained. To keep on winning you must have good coaches, dedicated players, and enthusiastic fans. We’ve set a standard that is kept by trying our very best to win but most importantly, by giving it our highest effort. Athletics build character and discipline and they're fun. Whether its an individual or team endeavor the end result will hopefully be a victory but if not a victory, then self-satisfaction in knowing that each player gave 100%. THE PLAYERS . .. THE MAGIC . .. The Tiger’s first season game was against its 2A rival, Reeltown. Thurman Johnson scored two touchdowns, Scotty Fourtenbary made one and Bradley Ford made a fourth touchdown with Joel Gulledge making three of the four extra points. The first Tiger win ended with the score of 26-6. On the Friday night before school began, the Tigers traveled to their first away game against Beauregard. The weather was humid and wet, but this did not stop the Tiger determination, Keith Canada scored the first touchdown followed by Ondray Jennings making a spectacular catch in the end zone for a second TD. Joel Gulledge made the extra point. The Tigers won by a score of 15-0. The third victory for the Tigers was against Lafayette. Thurman Johnson made two TD’s and Bradley Ford caught a pass by Joel for a brilliant touchdown. Troup entertained the crowd by tripping over the water bucket. Homecoming ’86 not only brought floats and parades, but the fourth straight victory for the Mighty Tigers. This was the first challenge for the players, but they proved their strength. Thurman and Scotty made the two touchdowns and Joel kicked a 22 yd. field goal to put the Tigers 17-7 over the Chavala Wildcats! The Tigers took on Randolph County with the famous Dadeville Spirit and made their record 5-0 for the first time in several years. Thurman had the credit for two of the TD’s with one received pass from Joel and the other a 3 yd. drive over the goal line. Jonathan Goodman made the third touchdown when he received a deep pass from Thurman Johnson. The final score that lighted up the hearts of everyone there was 21-7. Dadeville dropped their first game to Lineville with a slim defeat of 14-7. Joel Gulledge raced into the end zone scoring the Tiger’s only touchdown of the game and his extra point was good. Defeat was a blow, but everyone kept a positive attitude and set their goals for the games ahead. On October 10, 1986, the Tiger stadium was rocking with a tremendous battle on the field and a wave of enthusiasm in the crowd! The defense of the Tigers was unbelievable. Again and again the tigers hung tough. They refused to let the number 1 ranked team in the state across the goal line. Only through the air could Lanett get by. The Panthers kicked a 22 yd. field goal and made the score 0-3. Even though counted as a defeat, everyone was touched by this game and will always remember it as a mighty battle fought with the heart and soul of a Tiger! The clash of the two highly skilled teams at Elmore County is one not to be overlooked by far! The Tigers came back from almost certain defeat trailing the Panthers 14 points in the second half. Again the inner strength of the guys in black pulled it off! Scotty Fourtenbary drove in two touchdowns and Thur- man Johnson scored the third to tie up the game. Joel’s field goal put us ahead by 1 point making the score 21-20. The fight for this victory to make our record 6-2 proved once again the victory fever was back! The trip to Roanoke was definitely worth it. Especially for the Dadeville of- fense. With its most impressive show yet, a season high of 41 points in one game, Dadeville put it all together in this one. As usual, there was great defense with a good ground attack and an excellent kicking game. Thurman got credit for three touchdowns and Scotty Fourtnebary had two. Stanley Williams added a TD to make this important area game end with the score 41-14. The last home game of the season was on Halloween night. Thurman Johnson and Scotty Fourtenbary made the touchdowns for the Tigers. Once again Dadeville was victorious! The final score was 20-7. The Tigers earned a place in the first round of the State 4A Playoffs! In the first round of the state playoffs the Tigers traveled to Jemison for a depressing loss. The Tigers played a hard game with Thurman scoring the on- ly TD. Joel Gulledge kicked a field goal before the end of the first half wrapp- ing up the points scored by Dadeville. The final score was 14-9. The sizzling record of 8-3 proved that the PRIDE WAS BACK! Jessica Morris — Soph. Melinda Meadows — Jr. Amy Harper — Soph. Connie Clanton — Jr. Holly Freeman — Soph. This was the first time in five years that the Tigers had beaten the Wildcats. The highlight of the season came when D.H.S. won the county tournament. Dadeville defeated Daviston, Reeltown, and New Site to take the championship. Stanley Williams was named the MVP of the tour- nament. Charles White and Jonathan Goodman were named to the all- tournament team. The Tigers finished the regular season with a 9-13 record. Cap- tains for this season were David Oliver and Charles White. Their first loss, coming late December against Lafayette, ended their winning streak. The Tigers wouldn’t give up though. In January, they won the County Tournament held in Dadeville. The “Baby Tigers” were one of the three Dadeville teams to win the County Tournament. They went on to record wins over Reeltown and Roanoke. Let us leave this place where the smoke blows black And the dark street winds and bends. Past the pits where the asphalt flowers grow We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow, And watch where the sidewalk ends. Yes we’ll walk with a walk that is measured and slow, And we’ll go where the chalk-white arrows go, For the children, they mark, and the children, they know The place where the sidewalk ends. Not only can we print (technical teacher term — manuscript), but now we can really write. Yep, we learned how to do some “real” writing in the third grade (technical teacher term — cursive). We struggled at first, but we soon took control of our pencils. We enjoyed studying about that big, official city — Washington, D.C. We can cite the 8 parts of speech for you, if you’d like. Math was a little tougher; we never knew that multiplication problems could be so long. We enjoyed learning about drugs in health and decided that we could certainly do without them. But we never could have done without our third grade year. Field trips, projects, ex- periments; we’ve tried them all. History class con- tributed for most of these fun things. For you see, this year we studied all about our state. So naturally we know everything about Alabama, well, almost everything. We’ve trekked the trails of Horseshoe Bend and learned about our government first hand at the Capitol Building. In the Spring, we set our creative minds out to construct the best projects for the Alabama History Fair. We learned about animals in science (Hey Mom and Dad — I’m running away to work with Dr. Dolit- tle!!). While others have only dreamed of exploding the school, we have done it. Well, actually, we only exploded our homemade volcanoes that happened to be in the school. We won’t ever forget all that we’ve learned this year, especially what we’ve done. This is the first year that we became of- ficial members of a club. We are proud 4-Hers. We participated in the many activities that are a part of the club — sewing, baking, lamp building, bird house building, and the speech contest, just to name a few. Only some of us took home blue ribbons, but all of us took home proud smiles. We shared our meaning of Christmas with all of Dadeville when we staged a play — “The Christmas Question.” It would be terrific if all of our questions were that fun to answer. We went back in time to 1787 to learn about the U.S. Constitution. We even wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper of that time as a signer of the Constitution. We felt like one of the guys. You know the gang — George Washington, Ben Franklin, and John Hancock. We frazzled our hair over fractions, but that look seems very becoming. We’re slowly but surely mov- ing up. We’ve had some memorable times as the Seniors of the Elementary. We participated in so many events. We had our own car in the Homecoming Parade. Our Treasure Chest in the Halloween Carnival brought in fifteen hundred dollars — the most ever! Some of us played Indians and Pilgrims in our Thanksgiving play. We had an egg decorating contest in Easter and took joy in the fact that the eggs went to the needy people of the nursing homes. We did the most exciting things. We took a steam enginge train trip to Chattanooga. We visited several sights in Birmingham, and explored the Desota Caverns. Our only hope is that we enjoy the same benefits in high school. (Boy, do we have a lot to learn!) Never will we forget our memories of the sixth grade, nor the skeleton in Mrs. Zeanah’s room. With thoughts of leading a crowd tonight. When yelling and shouting with all that I got, I know this feeling could never be bought; For cheerleading comes from within my heart With the chance to cheer I never would part. But, I know someday the time will come When my cheerleading days will be over and done; I'll turn in my uniforms pom poms and stripes. But, never the memories for I’ll keep them for life.
