DURHAM CLASS HISTORY There comesa time in the life of every Senior when he finds himself reminiscing over the past 11 years of his life in school. We have reached that time and have decided to set our memories down on paper so that the Seniors in years to come may profit by our mistakes and thus find out what we learned the hard way. As a happy crowd of 6 year olds, our present dignified Seniors jostled into the 1st grade room on that never-to- be-forgotten day in September 1939 to experience their first day of school. Of these 54 snaggle toothed and wide- eyed youngsters only 7 have reached the coveted grade of Seniors of Dade High. These are Patsy Renfroe, Ronelle Ryan, Kathleen Morrison, A. C. Durham, Cora Gass, Howard Daniel, and Louretta Morgan. As our class proceeded on its way toward high school several new faces appeared among our ranks, four of whom have stayed. These are, Jacque Greene, Omar Bradford, Betty King and Dale Dover. Finally, after 7 hard years we received our Certificates and thus reached our long sought-after title of Freshmen of Dade High. We knew that this year was all important, so we tried our best to appear as seasoned high school stu- dents and were determined to work earnestly and make our names known. At the beginning of this year we noticed several other frightened Freshmen who joined us eagerly and remained for the next 4 years. They were Marvin Brad- ford, Lacey Neal, Janet Barnes, John Ingram, Louise Carver, Janet Cross, ClaraDean, Charles Hollingsworth, Ruth Wallen, Henry Kilgore, Athene Holtzhower, Joyce Moore, Franklin Baker, Joanna Massy, Bobby Fugatt, Ruby Smith, Junior Wells and Imogene Schurch. The next September we returned to Dade High full of vim and vigor and equipped mentally and physically (we hoped) to cope with our new and heavier subjects. We had an enjoyable time together with our new classmates, Ruth Payne, Junior Williams, Jack Murphy and Nina Keeton, and completed our Sophomore year without a care in the world. Then, we landed into our happiest and most exciting year thus far. As Juniors we were faced with the tremen- CLASS HISTORY dous problem of entertaining our upperclassmen, the Sen- iors. However, theclass, which had only one new addition, Margaret Kenimer, set to work and we finished our Junior year in a blaze of glory, as our entertainment was pro- claimed a hit by everyone. During this year our first football team was organized and had a very successful year, with many of our Juniors taking part. Our Junior boys and girls were also active in basketball and all of our other sports. The girls were initiated into the F. H. A. Club and caused quite a commotion at school as we paraded in Chapel to show off our original costumes. We had the honor to have JanetBarnes on our school debating team and another Junior to enter in the Literary Contest. Our final year at Dade dawned bright and clear, and under the direction of a wonderful faculty and capable offi- cers and with our only other new member, Grace Castle- berry, we set to work. One of our biggest jobs this past year has been to publish our Annual, which we have done successfully under the capable leadership of Lacey Neal as Editor. We have been proud of our classmates who have made names for themselves in school sports, news and the Literary events. Our Seniors have been leaders in all activities and have proven themselves capable in under- taking all jobs. Jack Murphy was elected President of the Student Body by the students and successfully served as head of the Student Council. Bobby Fugatt also made a record which probably won't be broken or equalled in several years by scoring 116 points during the football season. And now, as our Senior year is fast dr awing to a close, that glorious event, graduation, that seemed so far away a short time ago is fast approaching. Class Night and the long walk up the aisle in cap and gown to receive our di- plomas will come and go as all the other happy events we have enjoyed together; and the class of '51 will pass into other fields of activity where we hope we shall bring new honors to dear old Dade High, to our Principal, Mr. J. C. Billue, and to all our teachers who have labored so un- tiringly to bring us to graduation. 14 Kathleen Morrison CLASS PROPHECY It is now the year 1961 and as I look about me, I won- der if this could possibly be the class of '51. I find that Joanna Massey and Grace Castleberry are nurses in the new Trenton Hospital. Margaret Kenimer is now singing in a musical comedy at the State Theatre in California. Franklin Baker is now Captain of Georgia football team. Hollywood, that land of wonder, has claimed Ninarae Keaton and Junior Wells. They have succeeded Blondie and Dagwood. Lacey Neal has decided that a Texas cowboy life is not his occupation and is now a famous Lookout Mountain Plow- boy. Kathleen Morrison is now an old maid school teacher in Arizona. Jack Murphy has just received an award for being A- merica's shortest man. After four years of practice on school desks, walls, tables and piano, Junior Williams has become a profes- sional carver. While passing through Trenton I stopped at Dade High School. I saw Janet Barnes as Principal's Secretary. The Principal is none other than John Ingram. Athene Holtzhower is a famous dress designer for Loveman's Fashion Shop. Mrs. Willis Christopher, the former Patsy Renfroe, has finally fulfilled her dreams of quadruplets. Omar and Marvin Bradford are mechanics on Lookout Mountain. I went into the court house in Trenton and to my sur- prise I saw Howard Daniel as Judge. Imogene Schurch has at last fulfilled her dreams to be- come ahousewife. She is running a boarding house atHead River Farms. The owner is Ray Stallings. 15 CLASS PROPHECY Ruby Smith is now a Missionary in Egypt. Lauretta Morgan and Betty King are operating a new beauty shop in New England. Ronelle Ryan is now Chattanooga's Shoe Shine Boy. Louise Carver is now a Secretary at Interstate Life Insurance Co. Janet Cross is now teaching typing to all the Senior boys at Dade High. Henry Kilgore is still chasing the girls. Especially blondes. Jacque Greene is now an Opera Singer in Texas. She will quit the job and be married. At Wildwood I found Bobby Fuggat President of the New Hospital. Charles Hollingsworth has a job over station DHS play- ing the piano. I stopped at the Dade Theatre and much to my surprise I saw Ruth Paine and A. C. Durham starring in Two Days to Marry. Ruth Wallen is the Glee Club Director in the new Mor- ganville High School. Clara Dean has just received an award for being the world's best speaker. Cora Gass is now a nurse in Erlanger Hospital. Joyce Moore is now the President of the State F. H. A. Club. Dale Dover is now the world's greatest joker. I found to my surprise that all are still living and in a short period of ten years, each one had reached some height of success. Joyce Moore I rri _ n _ _ • m ir u The young warriors danced madly in a savage fashion, while in the huge council tepee the great squawsand chiefs ughed and grunted as their eader-in-waiting,(funning Woodall, announced the fate the thirty sDc wnjje menwho we re captured stealing knowledge from the great Chief's sacred tomb Dade High School. The Chief in- waiting arose and raised his hand for silence immediately the grunting stopped. The Chief spoke Eleven years ago we captured a heap of white people, who throughout the years have grown into tall men and women who would help their brothers fight against us and take our land and knowledge. Therefore the Great Chief Sitting Billue has decided that on May the 18 they must die! The thirty- six men and women were brought in and sentenced. The leader of the white men requested permission to leave their belongings to another group that has two years to go before their sentence is passed. They wrote the following will: Henry Kilgore leaves to anyone who wants them his old girls friends and the keys to his car provided they take good care of the car. Franklin Baker wills to Benny Bradford his ability to distinguish between apossum and apole cat. And to Kyle Broom all of his Cigarette butts. Marvin Bradford bequeaths to Donald Gray his used tooth picks he stole at the Busy Bee Cafe last fall. John Ingram wills to Lawerence Woodward every- thing he can't get in his car on graduation day and to C. M. Smith his Ford Convertible. Omar Bradford leaves his secret loves to Merrill Smyth and hope he has better luck than he has. Charles Hollingsworth wills his ability to study and to make good grades to Edward McClendon. Jacque Green and Patsy Renfroe leave their hair (and Red Rinse) to Wanda Johnson and Bettye Hixson just in case they ever need it. Dale Dover leaves to Dwell Everette Benny Gaddis his ability to aggravate Mrs. Gricks and Mr. At- kinson without being punished. Ninarae Keeton Ruth Wallen leave to Peggy Ren- froe Bernadine Moore their bottles of Peroxide just in case they ever desire to be blonds. Kathleen Morrison leaves her ability to go with one boy for four years and still put up with him to Betty Price. Jack Murphy leaves to Ronald Steele his place as Football Captain and as President of the Student body.
