Y Students enrolled in the Biological Problems in Contemporary Society course sponsored a disussion-debate on the Gathright Dam Proiect. Approximately 200 college and community members attended the February evening debate in the College Center. Panel members were: Ben C. Moomaw, executive vice-president of the Covington-Alleghany County Chamber of Commerce, John Mitchell, former proiect engineer for the Gathright Project, Dr. Robert H. Giles, professor Wildlife science at Virginia Tech, and Dr. William Odum, assistant professor of environmental science at the University of Virginia. Dr. John Backels, president of DSLCC, served as moderator. Such aspects of the controversial Gathright Proiect as its cost-to-benefits ratio, evential cost, environmental effects, flood control capability, and amount of draw-down were discussed. 56

Square dancing proved to be one of the most popular with sixteen participants and many more spectators. The course Biological Problems in Contemporary Society produced some interesting proiects, including an ecology dinner created from natural foods.
