Anne Bentz Van Horn's extensive English depart- ment offered debate and various lit- erature courses along with Papere back Power, Job English Training, and the regular English classes. The importance of reading was strongly emphasized. Our teachers consid- ered good control of the English lan- guage a skill, and they worked stead- ily to help the students broaden their appreciation of the language. 34 William Cofer Fine Arts was a combination of courses enabling students to devel- op and express skills and talents of their own. Music department was made up of several choirs, band, or- chestra, and instrumental music les- sons. These areas were exercised through musicals, half-times at games, and assemblies. The depart- ment of arts was made up of speech, drawing, and painting classes. These opportunities made it possible for students to exhibit individual in- terests.
