I appreciate the opportunity to say in all sincerity, that I feel extremely fortunate to serve you and the Van Horn community. These are surely trying times in education. It con- tinues to become increasingly difficult to administer a good school when so many agencies are trying to be involved in decision making. You have a good school at Van Horn, and you are a good student body to work with. I hope that each of you has had a profitable year, and to you seniors I wish for you the very best in anything you undertake. Dear Students, It is with a certain feeling of gratification that I write this note. This marks the end of two successful years at Van Horn, of which you have been an integral part, one way or another. Through good moments and bad moments I have tried to relate personal experiences and experiences of others to you in an effort that you might gain insight and be aware of many facets of life. Many of you seniors observed what others and I had to say and now graduation is here. Hopefully, what you gained here will be especially helpful in the formulation of your life's occupation and your positive contribution toward making this a better society in which to live. To the remainder of you underclassmen, you have something to look forward to. Happy landing. Dear Fellow Falcons, I wish I could give each of you a formula that would insure you the happiness and success that would last a life time. Unfortunately, i can not. However, will tell you this: the challenges and pressures that you are certain to face, can be dealt with. Remember, students technology has made life in this country a hundred-yard dash. You must prepare your life as though it were a race - you must train, train, train. Your training here at Van Horn is only a small beginning, but it could amount to so much. I am hopeful that your experiences here will in some small way be valuable in helping you reach your potential as a citizen, leader, schola , and above all, a responsible member of society. Take advantage of all your opportunities for a new and brighter tomorrow. Train today to win the race tomorrow that will last ALL OF YOUR LIFE. Greetings to the faculty and students of Van Horn High School: I surely hope that each of you has had as much enjoyment and satisfaction out of this school year as l have had. As the times change and life becomes more complex, we should cherish the experiences and as- sociations which we have now. Soon many of you will leave Van Horn - never to return. May you long remember the values which you have learned from your colleagues and friends. May you be successful and happy in the years ahead. To those of you who will return to Van Horn - I hope that you will resolve to do your best to make Van Horn a better school than you found it when you came. y , asuccessfu ch00! year. trar, Mrs Van Bibber was in change of thebfflce staff er ether duties included ty h g suspensions, ytakmg 26 . After four tough openers, the Falcs bounced back with real determination. High- lights of the season were the 7-0 Homecoming victory over North- east, the strong defensive standoff against Southeast until the fourth quarter and the 7-6 victory over Central, which kept fans on edge until the last second of play. 54 3333 WY? Sure, the players and coaches did, but there were some other people putting out a lot of time and effort - the managers. Richard Lund's official title was Trainer, al- though he had a variety of jobs, from caring for minor injuries, and taping ankles, to loading and unloading heavy equipment. Terre Clemens and Robba Addison were Equipment Managers. Besides handling the equipment, the girls also ran errands for the coaches, acted as water girls during the games, and assisted Rich- ard Lund with injuries. Terre felt that the biggest ad- vantage of managing was being able to view the games from the field. We had the best seats in the house. 57 If the Junior Varsity had one outstanding quality, it was determination. The incentive provided by Coach Hawkins and Coach Brown, the desire to win, and the challenge of moving up to the varsity squad motivated each player to give his best. Who else but the 1975-76 Track Team! Al- though they faced a tough schedule, the suburban meets being the hardest, Coach Pauk felt the team fully capable of doing well this season. Some of the strongest events would prove to be: pole vaulting, the 880, shot put, distance, high hurdles, and sprint. ln pole vaulting, Barney Hattey, who took City last year, and Mike Clark, who holds the Freshman City record, were favored to do well. David Schrick ran the 880 in 2:06 flat last year and would be a strong contender this year. Some of the best distance men were listed as: Frank Gallick, Gary Winslow, and Joe Vereecke. Coach Pauk remarked that overall his most valuable player would certainly have to be Paul Brown, who would be talented enough to do anything from the hurdles to the triple jump. 92 Tennis Anyone? This year's tennis team looked forward to a great year. Although they only had three returning lettermen, compared to the five last year, Kevin Bufton felt that with the help of great J.V. squad moving up after taking City last year, the team would do well. One of the team's strenghths was the only girl member, Lori Zacha- rias, who would prove to be a challenge to the other members, as she was rated first in the Independence Tennis Association. Some of the squad's other strong points were their determination and the crowd's participation. Mike Kline, senior, remarked, The audience can make all the difference in the world. Unfortunately, at Van Horn, sports such as tennis and track are sometimes overlooked. Coach: Tom Fay .isEBQE Row 1: Steve Stites, Bernie Miller, Wayne Timmons, Kevin Burgess, Doug Montgomery. Hopefully this was not to be the outcome of Van Horn's baseball season in 76. At the time of this publication, the team was looking for- ward to a great year. This season brought one noticeable change to the team. It was the first time in the history of baseball at Van Horn that a girl has been allowed on the team. The Olympic weightlifting team at Van Horn has been in existence for two years. Our team was one of four Olympic weightlifting teams in the United States. Our muscular men took first in the East and Northeast tournaments in January. The two types of lifts used were the Olympic clean and jerk and the olympic snatch. The clean and jerk is a lift from shoulder above head, and the snatch is a lift from the floor above the head in one motion. 99 QAEEE ?EENQS Wa- C?EW. mail In lav v.1. m. The money made goes for equipment for all Van Horn sports. V-Club had about 30 paid members at the beginning of the year, with more members coming in throughout the year. They also had a float in the Homecoming Parade. Spon- soring V-Club this year was Mr. Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell 101 102 The varsity cheerleaders have put forth much effort to create en- thusiasm for many sports, nOt only during the school year, but also throughout the summer. Their camp this summer was at Missouri University at Rolla, where they learned new cheers and won best tumbling of all-round competition. To help pay for this trip, the girls sold sponges. Thank you, Junior Varsity cheerleaders for helping to build the enthusiasim for another winning season. Patty Timko was the captain for sophomore cheer- leaders, Cathy Troop acted as the co-captain. Lt All right, you guys, line up! Pick up your knees! Point your toes! And SMILE! These words could be heard every Thursday afternoon echoing down the first floor hall. Why? The 75-76 Falconettes were practicing in the cafeteria. Their year was filled with hard work, high goals, and lots of praise. They took first place in the Homecoming float contest and marched their way to a first place trophy in the Fourth of July Parade last summer. These weren't the only accomplichments of the Falconettes. They gained schoolwide recongnition for their updated and upbeated performances. They rocked to such tunes as Get Down Tonight , Barbara Ann , and That's The Way . The members of Drill Team be- came a close-knit organization. As the progressed, they found lasting friendships and many fond memories. As captain Kathy Davis put it, We've accomplished more this year than anyone thought Sponsor, Mrs. KOCh we could, but we couldn't have done without the deep dedication and hard work of each member. 107 Exceptional Enthusiasm was shown this year by the Pep Club. They underwent a change as a new point system was incorporated. To remain in the club and gain certain privileges, every girl was required to accumulate a set number of points during each sports season. Points were gained by going to games, making banners, and selling spirit ribbons. This system was designed to get more Sponsor; Diane Anderson support for all sports and to keep the club fully active all year. Pep Pals faithfully decorated the athletes' lockers, giving them person- al backing. The big project of the Pep Club was the Super Falc dance in January. Because of each girl's involvement and devo- tion, this was one of the Pep Club's most successful years. The Homecoming festivities got off to a rollicking start with Mick- ey Mouse and all his gang joining in the pep assembly. The six can- didates were introduced to the students, and their personalities were revealed through questions ranging from their favorite car- toon character to their opinion on a serious subject. The spirit born in the assembly carried over to the football field that evening. A strong defensive game held the score at 0-0 at halftime, when the Cartoon Caravan paraded onto the field led by the marching band. Seven clubs were repre- sented by floats depicting various FE AIAWAKI. cartoon characters. The judges awarded prizes for the three best floats. Drill Team with Donald Duck took first place, Pep Club with Fred Flintstone took second, and the Vocal Music department with Snow White took third. The floats were followed by the candi- dates, each riding in a different corvette. The Drill Team conclud- ed the halftime show with their galloping cowboy routine. The second half remained suspenseful until the Falcons scored in the fi- nal moments, defeating Northeast 7-0. The excitement of the victory was still in the air the next night. The exceptionally large crowd danced to the music of The Northbound Express as the ten- sion mounted to the climax - the crowning of the queen, Sheryl Crawford. As the evening drew to a close and the couples parted, each carried many happy memo- ries of Van Horn's 1975-76 Home- coming. 115 Karen Peters escorted by Mark Gilstrap Jayne Johnson escorted by Jeff Kuddes Anne Maglich escorted by Terry Moore BasketbaH Sweetheart Princesses Jill Porterfield Karen Rice escorted by escorted by Jim Watgts Terry Sutcliffe ,117 .1 .. . , ,, ' .Supe? Thus the fall musical was advertised, while the cast, chorus, and orchestra were rehearsing every night for over a month prior to the November 21 and 22 performances. Those rehearsals became extremely long when one missed getting his order in to McDon- ald's and had to watch hungrily while the rest of the cast enjoyed Big Macs and the orchestra munched french fries. When the final dress rehearsal came, sto- maches had begun to tie themselves in knots, and ev- eryone began having those last-minute doubts - ev- eryone except Mr. Cofer, Mr. Fike, and a few veterans of previous Van Horn musicals. They knew that once the curtain rose on opening night all would be well. And as always, they were right. Little Mary Sunshine was such a light-hearted production that it was hard to determine who had the most fun - the actors or the audience. if r2 Little Mary Sunshine 'r 'r t'ri. 2 The Cast CHIEF BROWN BEAR - Ted Learning Tim Wood .......... Can you imagine the humor of finding yourself trapped in the American Embassy of a tiny Communist country while the world outside awaited your release and watched your every move? Chuck Good and Kelley Hazen, as Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hollander in Woody Allen's DON'T DRINK THE WATER, experienced this situation in this year's production of the Van Horn Spring Play. The show told the story of the Hollander family and pictures they took of a top secret Communist project. The family fled to the American Embassy and became involved in a world-wide incident. As the plot developed, the humor of the situation began to show through. Amusing anecdotes of the cast led to the hilar- ious climax of the show. 135 CONCEDT 6 .l. New wall murals brightened much of the school. They were painted by artistically- inclined students. Homecoming, which was the largest project of Stuco, with the dance, pa- rade, and assembly was a great success. The girls were ready and willing to provide needed service for any of Van Horn's various teams, but they mainly served the wrestling and gymnastics teams this year. Genuine interest was the basic requirement for joining the club, but the usual grade requirements had to be met also. The interest of the girls was shown by the fact that half of them had already lettered in a sport or participated in one during the year. Membership is obtained after gaining twenty-five points which are earned by participating in weekly contests. This year, the league has doubled its member- ship and raised money by raffling off a $100.00 bill. Two members, Kelley Hazen and Jeff Propst, commented on the mounting tension before a tournament and the challenges of competition. They brought out the idea that this was more than an organiza- tion: they were friends, working toward a common goal, they be- came a family, sharing the hard- ships and the good times. 189 K1666. ?.xxxxx6xxtxvnxxxx xx x. . . Although we gained no scholastic credit, we did gain the pride that goes along with personal accom- plishment and creation. Tedious planning, numerous revisions, weekend meetings, and the tension before deadlines were made worthwhile only by the relief and joy when those deadlines were met. Our goal was to create the best yearbook Van Horn has ever had. Weifirmly believe that this is that book, and we hope that you agree. Respectfully yours, The FALCON Staff 285 286 The Closing of this book signifies the closing of another school year, but for many it means the ending of one lifes- tyle and the beginning of a new, entire- ly different one. The concept of freedom becomes a way of life, be- ginning with the freedom to live one's own life for himself. Freedom to be to be anything one chooses ... a lone candle in the darkness, or 3 mil- lion bonfires bringing the light of freedom to the darkest corners of peo- ple's minds. Freedom to be Always. 287 : Q. ?Eaalll 288 289 Adams, Donald: 74,266 Ahring, Brian: 171, 266 Akers, Jeff: 266 Allen, Bradley: 55, 59,75,266 Anderson, Robin: 109,187,266 Applebury, Russell: 266 Atkison, Carlas: 169,266 Bagley, Jacquelyn: 266 Bagshaw, Darryl: 180,266 Baird, Theresa: 266 ,Baker, Stoyie: 266 Ballew, Glenn: 266 Barber, Merrie: 266 Barnett, Charles: 266 Baughman, James: 69, 180,181,266 Bayless, Janet: 266 Bergin, Janice: 158,266 Bogacz, Frances: 266 Bolinger, Beverly: 175,266 Bonner, Karen: 79,175,266 Bordon, Christopher: 266 Borgstadt, Sharon: 187,266 Bowles, Suzette: 176,266 Brashear, Tammara: 175,266 Brawner, Patricia: 175,181, 182,184, Breshears, Mildred: 266 Breunig, Victoria: 266 Bridge, Judy: 266 Briles, Gary: 266 Brisbin, John: 266 Brooks, Stephen: 55, 59,267 Brown, Carol: 267 Brown, Melvin: 267 Bryant, Raymond: 267 Buford, Susan: 169 Burnaugh, Steve: 59,267 Bussinger, Sherry: 187,267 Byers, Theresa: 267 Cable, Christopher: 267 Cannon, Clara: 67 Cantrell, Bobby: 55,56,59,98,154,267 Cargyle, Susan: 267 Carlyle, Steven: 267 Carmack, Lisa: 157 Carr, Mitzi: 267 Carriker, Julie: 267 Carroll, Jean: 267 Casey, John: 267 Casey, Panick: 154,268 Cearnal, Steven: 268 Chamberlain, Marlene: 109,160,175,268 Choat, Vicki: 172,175,268 Clark, Mike: 55,59,98,152,1754,179,268 Clark, Terri: 268 Clayton, Rebecca: 175,187,268 Clemens, Chris: 75,180,181,268 Coffman, Danny: 268 Coker, Robert: 268 Collins, Jerry: 268 Cooper, Roxanne: 268 Cooper, Susan: 268 Coulter, Davd: 268 Covington, Alan: 75,182,268 Cowick, Kim: 268 Cox, Vicky: 268 Crain, Cathy: 275,268 Cramer, Karen: 268 Crandall, Paul: 182,191,268 Crawford, Frankie: 268 Crawford, Mark: 268 Crayton, Mark: 268 Creager, Joy: 268 Cummings, Laurie: 268 Curtin, Jane: 268 7 Curtin, Mark: 180,268 Soph ores!
