They can never close, however, on all the memories of work and play that the class will take away. Memories of classes, homework, and projects, hours of practice, ball games and precious victories, all are part of a Senior's legacy from his Alma Mater. The Staff of the 1963 DABNEY ECHOES presents to the school and community in words and pictures events that have made up the 1962-1963 school year. Realizing that school means many things to many people, we have tried to include those people and events significant to the student body as a whole, as well as experiences meaningful to smaller groups. With the highest esteem, we make this presentation to one who is cheerful and resourceful, who has encouragement and inspiration for us, and to one whose friendship we sincerely appreciate. Throughout three years her loyal devotion to our school, and her untiring interest in our welfare have been realized and it is with love and most gracious thanks for every kind consid- eration that we, the Class of 1963, dedicate our volume of DABNEY ECHOES to our friend, Mrs. Mary Shields. LE VOICI When the annual's last page is drawn, and the pencils are thrown aside, When the newest ideas seem jaded, and the copywriters are tired, We shall rest, and faith, we shall need it--stop work for an aeon or two But without some annual staff meeting, we'll hardly know what to do! The pages that are good will be lauded--shall receive all the credit due But we shall be hid in a closet ‘til all the reviews are through. We'll remember the hours we spent here, in spring, and summer and fall, That we worked for ages on a couple of pages and never sat down at all! And only our friends will praise us, and only our critics will blame, Though no one has worked for money and no one has worked for fame; But each for the joy of working, and each in his separate star, Has shown the year as we saw it, for your memory of things as they are. IN WORTHWHILE.PROJECTS... . CLASS PROPHECY Here we are, the Class of '63, having our class reunion ten years later (1973) in the home of our former sponsor, Mrs. Mary Shields. My! Doesn't it seem funny to see Mrs. Shields sitting by her handsome, sixteen year old son, Barry? As I enter the room, the first person I see is the former Brenda Greene standing next to her handsome husband, She is a graduate of Meredith College and is living in Oxford. I hear she has an engagement next month to sing at the Metropolitan and her mother has promised to keep her children while she is in New York. There stands Linda Woody, a graduate (with honors) from Chowan, She is secre- tary to the President at Duke University. Boy! I bet head is in a whirl looking at all those good-looking boys. I hear Jackie Overby is also at Duke. He is coaching the number one team in the nation, the Duke Blue Devils. I bet his head is whirling too, watching all those cute little cheerleaders. Who is that shy boy standing over in the corner? Why, it's Kenneth Ball! I under- stand he is still looking around for the right girl, but if he finds her, will he ever ask her for a date? I wonder! I hear a car speeding by. Oh! It must be Joe Bobbitt. I hear he does a lot of racing these days. I read in the SPORT'S Magazine just the other day that he has won the Indianapolis 500” for the fourth time. And riding with Joe is his good friend, Spott Burwell. He is a graduate of State College and is now the head of the Agricultural Department there. Is that Robert Dickerson and his wife standin g on the steps? He has settled down to farming, which was always his life's dream. Of course, his farm is next to his father’s and that is natural because we all depend on Dear Old Dad and Mom, What delicious refreshments. The ham rolls for this gala occasion were donated by Dennis Greenway, who is the head of The American Bakeries. He should be gain- ing weight by now, Who is that handsome man standing outside in a Marine uniform? Not Joe O'Brien. But it is, too, My, he looks good but it's a pity that he had to cut all those beautiful blond curls. Well, he always did want to be a Marine, even when we were in high school. Oh, there is Tim Robinson. Well, I don't think he is married yet. He always did have a way with girls, though. I guess he is still just roaming around, But he has plenty of time. Jimmy Roberson was always good for staying out of trouble, and now he is trying to help others stay out of trouble, too. He is Chief of Police in his old home town, Last but not least, I see the last member of my class. It's Thomas Smiley, He is running his own service station, I guess he really enjoys that if he works on nothing but Fords, Now, as for me, I guess I'd better be going home to my husband (he is baby-sitting) and son, since the reunion is almost over, Well, I've seen all of my old classmates and learned of their present life. But all good times must come to an end and I must go. Maybe ten years from now we'll have another class reunion and we can all be together again, At least I hope so!
