CUYAHOGAN 1964 CUYAHOGA FALLS HIGH SCHOOL” 2300 FOURTH STREET CUYAHOGA FALLS, OHIO PRESENTED BY THE SENIOR CLASS TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION 1 FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION 12 CLASSES 30 STUDENT LIFE 122 MUSIC 158 SPORTS 172 RECOGNITION 206 ADVERTISING 220 SENIOR DIRECTORY 239 FALLS HIGH IS . . . 2500 students learning, growing, and living. It’s twenty-five hundred individuals Each one exploring, waiting, pushing, timid, bold, kind, daring. It’s 2500 confused but striving young people. Falls is a crowded hall, a long lunch line, a huge assembly. Or it’s a team, a lab partner, a special friend. It’s clubs, term papers, dances, homework, sports, and more homework! But most of all, Falls High is 2500 students learning, growing, and living. FALLS HIGH IS LIVELY It’s lively faces, lively chatter, crepe paper streamers, signs, and noise. A car caravan getting ready to roll, and students singing, “We’re gonna heat St. V’s tonight!’’ Falls is the cheering, stamping, shrieking crowd that supports the team every game. It’s 2500 students thundering their “Battle Cry. And Falls is a lively gym class with jumping jacks, twenty laps, and gymnastics. It’s running to class, or dancing at Tiger Den. Always vivacious, spirited, energetic— Falls High is lively! FALLS HIGH IS AMBITIOUS It’s the quiet ambition of students taking exams Or it’s the clatter of typists, the splash of the swim team. Sometimes it’s the beat of the practicing band or the choir’s warm-up. Aspiring artists, striving athletes— Falls is 2500 different dreams to be fidfilled, goals to be reached, and plans to be made. Whether it’s a smoky chemistry experiment, a heated debate, a lively committee meeting, or a research project, there is an underlying purpose. It’s new subjects and natural abilities. It’s time, effort, talent. These are young people who want to get a job, earn a scholarship, go to college, improve their lives. Falls High is ambitious. 6 8 FALLS HIGH IS MODERN It’s a beautiful, well-equipped auditorium, a spacious gym. But more than these, Falls is modern science facilities: a language lab and a reading lab, an l.B.M. machine, a well-planned cafeteria; modern equipment serving students and faculty. Still there is more: Falls is alive with modern ideas, with progressive leadership, an ever-expanding curriculum, and a growing library. Falls High is truly modern. 9 Twenty-five hundred students learning, growing, and living. It’s their achievements and failures, their moods and hopes. But their time for studying, painting, listening, singing, and working will soon end; for Falls High is the ever changing face of 2500 young people learning, growing, living, and graduating. 12 CULTY GEORGE H. There were a variety of new occurrences and many radically different things of which the newly organized sophomores ere to be a part. They learned that the kids from that “other junior high” weren't so bad after all. Though rivalry was great between Sill and Bolich, it took only a few short days for unification to become firmly established among the six hundred plus of the largest class in the history of the high school. Many found it difficult to locate their classes during the first week, but with aid from those few sophomores who had been freshmen at the high school the year before, the obstacle was soon overcome. The problems always encountered at the start of a new year when one attends a school for the first time were kept to a minimum, and the sophomores were able to get by with few mishaps. There were many other factors which aided the class of 64” in their first year. At that time school spirit was at a peak. The sophomores took advantage of this opportunity to become an active segment of the student body. Their cheering was as loud as anv, and they did their share of work as well as play in all school organizations. Upperclassmen were often surprised by the enthusiasm with which the sophomore class went about its duties. The Junior year was launched with the arrival of the black and white class jackets which had l een chosen the previous year. The homeroom representatives were elected so that they could choose class rings and take care of the numerous other admini- strative duties. Later that year class dues were collected, and the class of “64” found itself short of funds. This didn’t dampen their spirits though, and they managed to gather together enough money to take part in the first Junior-Senior Prom ever held at Falls High. Amidst this money-spending the juniors did manage to take part in the less expensive activities. A small band of athletes made a successful assault on varsity athletic teams, while the Thespians were winning the One-Act Play Festival and success- fully staging a production of The Miracle Worker. Early that spring the school witnessed the election of an able body of class officers to take over tin reins of leadership. After a summer of leisure the new seniors returned to lord over the underclassmen. There were several changes with which the seniors as well as the whole student body ere faced upon their return. They found themselves under the capable supervision of the new head principal. Dr. Gilbert VVeldy. The seniors also took part in the first all-school plays ever held at Falls High. Seniors played a major role in an event which may be re- membered as the highlight of their three years at halls High. This was the football victory of the Black Tigers over their perennial rivals, St. Vincent’s, the first such victory since 1955. This game terminated the series between the two schools in a bang-up fashion. The afternoon of the game saw not only an exciting pep rally but also a highly stirring talk by Dr. Kaufman, Athletic Director. Shortly before the game, a car caravan con- sisting of over a hundred vehicles formed to escort the team to the stadium. Numerous other victories dotted the senior year of the class of “64”. One individual captured the state championship in the Voice of Democracy contest, climaxing the high school speaking career of one of the finest orators in the history of the school. Another senior led the debate team to numerous championships which included the Northeastern Ohio Ghampionship. The athletes weren’t sitting idly by during this period. A senior All-District selection led the basketball team to a successful season. A runner reset his school record in the 440 yard sprint. The marching band was again one of the top bands in the state. The dance band turned in an equally outstanding job, as did the orchestra. The a cappella choir was as talented as ever, and the glee clubs pre- sented an opportunity for anyone to take Dart in organized singing. In the spring of graduation, the class colors, flowers, and motto were chosen. Yellow and white were the colors chosen and the yellow rose, the flower. The motto chosen was ‘The past forever gone, the future still our own.” Near the end of the year came a ceaseless barrage of activities leading to graduation. The Junior-Senior Prom, the Senior Ham Dinner, the Senior Banquet, Baccalaureate, all brought final graduation a little closer. Finally June 9 came and three years of hard work culminated in one evening's ceremony with the presentation of diplomas. Thus the class of “64” spent its three years at Falls High: always leading, never following. These students have in their possession numerous past successes and great potential for the future, but they must remember that to succeed takes hard work. They can never relax and be contented with yesterday’s glories but must always strive upward for “The Past Forever Gone, the Future Still Our Own.” 33 Written by Dave Davidson SENIORS TERRY ABBOTT LUCILLE ABRUSCI MARY ABSALOM KENNETH ADAMS MARK ALSTEDT SHERI AHMED SANDRA ALEXANDER MICHAEL ALLAMAN LINDA ALLEE PENELOPE ALLEN MARGARET AMADIO MARJORIE AMADIO LINDA ANDERSON WAYNE ANDERSON 34 The Car Caravan to the Falls—St. V. Kenny Monroe and his band played at the dance. Seniors enjoying Bowling at Northgate Lanes during part of the All-Night Party. 92 GRADUATION 64 Graduation for many Seniors was a time to look forward to not only because it ended a period of four hard years but also because of the many activities it brought. After the Graduation exercises, the Seniors at- tended an All-Night Party sponsored by the parents. The theme was “The Golden Year ’64.” It consisted of a dance held in the school gym with Kenny Monroe and his Dixieland Band playing and a buffet supper in the school cafeteria. Then the Seniors moved on to the State Theatre to watch the movie. The Perfect Furlough. Bowling at four different places was then attempted and finally back to the school for a breakfast which climaxed a night filled with fun and many memories. Terry Ruggles tries to cheer up a group of tired graduated Seniors. 93 JUNIORS Bottom Row—Marcia Little, Pam Deeds, Nancy Scheatzle, Jackie Miller, Janet Bonstelle, Janice Reilly, Pat Dick, Connie Granger, Pat Thomas, Nancy Lawson. The aims of this club are to make the student body more athletic-minded, to keep the school colors, to keep the grades of all athletes as high as possible, to provide the best interscholastic record possible, to develop ethical character, to maintain high moral standards, to encourage high school standards, both on and off the athletic field, and to promote Cuya- hoga Falls High School athletics in general. These students discuss their jobs and form interesting activities and group projects. A few of the projects this year were bake sales, candy sales, and car washes in the Spring. The money raised through these projects was used to finance the employer-employee banquet which was held in May. The Industrial Club officers this year were Dennis Rainey, President, Dave Powell, Vice-President, Michele Harrison, Secretary, and Frank Livigni acted as reporter. This club was a new addition to Falls High this year and because of its success, it has achieved a permanent place on the list of activities for all interested students. Industrial Club members make future plans at a special meeting. An Interclub Council of girls was organized for the purpose of promoting the general welfare of all Falls High girls. This council is made up of senior girls; one elected representative from each club in the school. In the event a club has more than fifty girl members, it may elect a second representative from the junior mem- bers. Any girl in any club within the school may apply for membership to this council. A CAPPELLA CHOIR The A Cappella Choirs, established and maintained by Miss Josephine Long, have always had reputations for their excellence. This year’s eight-part, 128-member choir is no exception. Always in demand for programs at civic, service, and church organizations, the choir had quite a busy schedule this year. Two engagements especially high- lighted the Christmas season. They were the choir’s annual Christmas Vesper Service and an appearance on the One O’Clock Club on WEWS which featured Handel’s “Alleluia” and “Hallelujah Amen.” Miss Josephine Long, Choir Director 161 MELODETTES AND MELODY MEN Melodettes and Melody Men are groups of twelve girls and twelve boys respectively, who are chosen from the members of the A Cappella Choir. Although they usually sing separately, they do some programs together. This year, as in the past, the two groups filled engagements that the choir could not fill. For the choir’s Spring Show, they combined and sang “Big Rock Candy Mountain.” Melodettes and Melody Men rehearse for the Spring Show. MARCHING BAND The inarching band, under the direction of R. H. Feldbush, swung out to the sound of Peter Gunn.” Their great lineup of hit tunes made the football halftime shows tremendous in every sense of the word. This year’s march- ing band was the best in the history of our school, and we could not help but smile as they marched proudly down the field in their plumed hats and white convertors which they bought with the money they collected on Tag Day. Their excellent performances won them an invitation to the Hudson Parade of Bands and the Acme Zip Game. They also attended the district and state band contests. 166 Band music echoes through the gym at a pep rally. 167 «S9 VIOLIN: Ruth Ann Capes, Linda Arment, Elizabeth Keefe, Carolyn Snyder. Mr. Reynolds, Mr. Feldbush, and the orchestra begin a practice session. 168 The Concert Band practiced an hour each school day. Mr. R. O. Reynolds brought the concert band through another fine season. He provided entertainment for the people of Cuyahoga Falls at the Falls Public Schools Band Festival and the Falls High School Band Concert. The concert band also participated in district and state competition. The “Goldtones” have a rough weekly schedule to follow; there are three practices each week plus their outside jobs. To display the amount of work they put in, they presented a stage show in May. The “Goldtones” have provided entertainment for the state convention of the Civil Air Patrol, the Senior Ham Dinner, “The Rhapsody in Sweets” at the First Methodist Church, and the teachers’ workshop. They also played for other area high school dances, and they spon- sored a dance for the parents of the members of the marching band. The Gold Tones provided entertainment for the Senior Ham Dinner. Tim Mayer, Tom Duplaga, and LeRoy Arnold take the solo spot. Practice was the key to their success. 170 FALLS HIGH MAJORETTES Sally Zelenka, our head majorette, pauses after her half-time routine. This year, our Majorettes, under the capable leader- ship of Sally Zelenka, provided fine half-time entertain- ment for both our football and basketball games. Their hard work was rewarded by the spectators’ enthusiastic applause for their routines, the favorite of which was the dance to the “Theme from Peter Gunn.” During football season, Sally did a very impressive two-fire baton routine. JINX The Black Tigers started the grid campaign with a loss to Lakewood but captured revenge by winning their next three games with Akron Buchtel, Elyria, and Dayton Roosevelt in tight defensive play. However, the campaign was highlighted by the breaking of the eight-year-old St. Vincent’s gridiron jinx as the fired-up Tiger team powered their way to victory in the dusty Green Street Stadium. The Black Tigers were able to reach .500 mark on the season record even though the tough schedule included state-rated powers such as Akron Garfield, Alli- ance, and Canton McKinley. The Black Tigers again had a strong defensive unit. The best defensive back was senior Pete Oldham. The top linebacker position was filled by Dick Holland, and Chuck Mason was shone as the best lineman. The offensive unit was also highlighted by Oldham as the best back, and junior Denny Cole led the offensive line charging. Senior Steve Nagy was the top rusher as he crashed through the opposition for 422 yards. Next year’s squad will be somewhat weakened by the loss of outstanding senior talent, but there are still many good prospects that are expected to improve. D. Bachtel, J. Miner, B. Pfaff, S. During their 1964-65 season they cheered for three pep assemblies and for the greatest game ever against our biggest rival, Akron St. Vincents. At the St. V pep as- sembly the thirteen cheerleaders put on a skit, and under the direction of a football coach, they performed some of the greatest Tiger formations. The weather was as bad as usual during their season with rain, snow, and mud, not hindering the cheerleaders’ abundance of pep and spirit. The new system of twelve different cheerleaders for foot- ball and basketball proved very successful after the close of the football season. Their advisor is Mrs. Simpson. 182 Goodyear Park; the sight of Falls’ C. C. Meets. C. C. RUNNERS POST 8 - 8 SEASON The 1963 Cuyahoga Falls’ cross country team under Head Coach Hank Pozarski finished the season by hitting the .500 mark, leaving them with eight wins and eight losses. The losses came to some of the top teams in the district. The team had six top runners: Gary Schultz, with the best time of 10 min., 32 sec.; Captain Bill Frakes ran it in 10 min., 34 sec.; Dave Isner, John Diebel, Terry White, and Jerry White all ran it in li minutes flat. In the District Meet, Captain Bill Frakes won a medal by placing eighteenth out of approximately one hundred runners. The team was very young this year, with the sopho- mores and juniors outnumbering the leaving seniors, so Coach Pozarski looks for a very successful season in 1964. Dudich helps defeat Ellet during tournament. Gaston starts action in sectional tournament. After a slow start the 1963-64 Black Tigers basketballers rebounded in the second half of the season to compile a very respectable campaign. Early season setbacks were meshed out by new opponent, Toledo Scott, area power, Akron South, top-ranked Canton McKinley, and defending state-champion, Columbus East. These losses were over- shadowed with powerful victories over arch-rival, St. Vincents, ever-dangerous Akron Central, high-scoring Mansfield, and third-rated Massillon. Tournament play found the Black Tiger hoopsters finishing as runner-up in sectional play. The Tigers roared past Metro Co-Champion, Ellet, in an exciting first-round contest before smothering Springfield 59-35 in the semi- finals. But, the classy Akron North Vikings stopped the Black and Gold in the sectional finals and then went on to capture the district crown. The team was led by Co-Captains Pete Thorne and Dave Krino. Thome was the top scorer, the best foul shooter, and the best defensive player. Krino was marked as the most improved defensive player. Gary Eiber added to the Tigers’ strength under the backboards as the best rebounder on the team. Several varsity players achieved awards for their superb play. Pete Thorne made the first team, All- District, Dave Krino was on the fourth team and junior Gary Eiber received honorable mention. 185 BUILDING SEASON PRODUCES 13-8 MARK The prospects for next year are very bright. The loss of seniors Pete Thome, Dave Krino, and Denny Wright will weaken the squad on both offense and defense, but last year’s returning players should offset this handicap. The returning squad should still be powerful, well- balanced, and much improved with experience. Larry Vucovich, Tim Dudich, Gary Eiber, Don Bachtel, Craig Gaston, Tom Parsons, Jim Wolcott, and Gary Dobbins will be the returning front-lining seniors of this year. Returning sophomores will be George Mead, and Dan Retzer. This squad will be led by Co-Captains-Elect Gary Eiber and Tim Dudich. Next year’s schedule will be much the same, as there is only one new opponent which is Cleveland Lakewood. Success with this rough schedule will rely on the strength of the opposing teams. Canton McKinley and Columbus East will each lose several tremendous players. Akron South will have to face the Black Tigers without the service of sharp-shooting Leroy Smoot and Toledo Scott will undoubtedly lose great height in their graduat- ing seniors. The surprising Barberton Magics of this year will have to make great alterations to equal this year’s scrapping squad. Akron East will also be weaker on the basketball front next season as they have suffered the loss of Louis Daggitt, Huston Breedlove, and Jerry Strebbler through graduation. The eighth-ranked Canton Lincoln Lions will also be faced with a setback without high-scoring Rick Haversack. With these favorable set- backs in the opposition, the Black Tigers will undoubtedly be more successful. Top—left to right: Mgr. G. Bartley, Coach Stanley, Coach Walker, right: J. Wolcott, G. Although our Varsity team could not conquer North High’s Vikings, the cheerleaders showed we had more spirit than they did, before a sold-out crowd of over 3200 people. The Cheerleaders advisor is Mrs. Simpson. The Junior Varsity Cheerleaders are Sandy Huss, Tana Clark, Sallie Walters, Cathy Page, Nancy Hengle, Captain Dianne Gubanc, and Alternate Judy Schnabel. Varsity Cheerleaders are Janet Harrington, Sandi Smith, Pam Deeds, Carol Lawrence, Linda Hawkes, and Captain Pat Haines. GRAPPLERS IN REBUILDING YEAR Armour proves tough at Stow. The wrestling team, in a rebuilding year, faced the best teams this area has had for several years and came out on the short end of the scoring column. Juniors Deny Cole and Mel Kosanchick compiled the best records with Mel closing out as sectional champion. The three seniors, Jim Bell, Rusty Armour, and Bob Griffin, started off slowly but finished well over the .500 mark. This year’s team, under Coach Paul Walker and senior Captain Ed Searle, was led by John Samulak, who, playing number one singles, won his fourth award as a varsity tennis player. Sherry studies hard for a test. SHERRY AHMED ARRIVES FROM EGYPT Sherry and her American sister, Ardenne Kominic. Sherry Ahmed from Egypt. Sherry Ahmed arrived in Cuyahoga Falls from Egypt half-way through the school year. She made her home with Ardenne Kominic and her family. Sherry took Eng- lish, Problems of Democracy, Notehand, Physics, Math and worked in the library. This year she has added much to the high school. Sherry helped members of the Na- tional Honor Society make a display on Egypt and its largest city, Cairo. She also gave speeches at a National Honor Society meeting and at a Booster Club meeting. Through the interest Sherry' created, National Honor Society sold stock in the American Field Service Associa- tion. Sherry, in addition, taught the students about the way of life in Egypt. Actually, there are many elements in common with American society. Sherry lives in a home similar to American houses. She attended an English school, and therefore, knew English well. The one fact that she pointed out as different was the concept of dating, fn Egypt young people go to parties in groups and not as couples. Sherry won many friends at Falls High and it is hoped she will take home with her many happy memories. Sherry and Ardenne walk home after school.
