The senior class ot l96O will be the last to graduate from the school as it stands today. Although we are eager for our building to be modern- ized, there are established ideals and tradi- tions which we hope will endure. However much the appearance of buildings may be altered, loyal school spirit and the warmth and friendliness ot classmates and teachers will remain unchanged. Athletically talented boys ot the school have the opportunity to develop their skills in a variety ot sports: tennis, golf, wrestling, basketball, football, swimming, baseball, and track. The newly' completed cinder track at Bolich Junior High, the baseball diamonds at Waterworks Park, the excellent high school tennis courts, and many additional facilities serve to encourage active participation. ln addition to providing a further op- portunity tor the development ot skills, our varsity athletic teams provide the rallying point tor school spirit, A good eye and a steady hand make Tom Mosher a high scorer on the rifle team. ls X2 If Q 13 yx 5 A ii-,. n 1 ' b- 1 'J 5 4 1 . wifi,- , : 09. af 5 . One of the best in the state, the band participates in civic parades and gives a free outdoor concert in appreciation of the city's response to their annual Tag Day project. ln November, the Band-Parents organi- zation gave its traditional dinner honoring the band's senior members, The German Band, a five-piece comedy group, provided entertainment for the event. An English fair outside Lon- don, a trip through a cheese factory in Co- penhagen, and a tour to Macbeth's castle, Inverness, in Scotland, gave rise to such songs as Wonderful Copenhagen and Comin' Through the Rye. ln Spain and lreland the entourage was entertained by folk dances and native songs. Although reluctant to leave all the wonderful sights they had seen, the travelers were anxious to return home. Once again at the international Airport in New York City the group expressed its pa- triotism through singing America - Our Heritage. A CAPPELLA CHOIR The A Cappella Choir, organized and still maintained by Miss Long, has grown steadily through the years. Starting with l6 members and four parts, it has developed into an eight-part choir with lOl voices. Over this period of time the choirs themselves have invested SS2lOO in robes and stoles and S600 in risers, in addition to purchasing a baby grand Baldwin piano and two spinets. The Organ Fund currently contains 52300, Sl5OO of which is credited to the Choirs of the past few years, This money has been raised from annual Spring shows, Glee Club proceeds, and gifts from civic groups. The A Cappella Choir is a civic-minded group and sings frequently for church organi- zations, service clubs, and the like. The choir as a whole holds an average of about l5 spe- cial engagements per year. This number does not include performances made by the Melo- dy Men, Melodettes, and Choraleers. The Choir marches annually in the Me- morial Day Parade and participates in the service at the Oakwood Cemetery. ln the spring of both i959 and i960 the Choir sang for the Federated Women's Clubs of Summit County. Also, the group has often presented programs for State Conven- tions held in this vicinity. A highlight of the i959-60 engage- ments was the presentation of a patriotic program at the Akron Masonic Temple in February. During the period from September l959 to March l96O, the Choir received gifts total- ing Sl4O, which was added to the organ Fund. BASKETBALL The i959-60 season saw the Tigers in their first year under the leadership of Coach Harold Andreas. With Mr. Andreas, Falls fans also wel- comed a new look in Tiger play, The team had the hustle, the drive, and determination that makes a gathering of athletes into a team. While losing a few heartbreakers to Massillon and Bar- berton, the team went on to compile a fine i3 . and 6 record. Partial credit for this excellent record must be given to Capt. Dick Taylor for his outstand- ing efforts all season. Taylor led the team in scoring and also showed the way in rebounding. He was named to the Akron area All-District Team and received an honorable mention in the All-Ohio voting. The Tigers had high hopes of going into the State Tournaments but ran into the Vikings from Akron North. Although handicapped by the ab- sence ot older, more experienced players, the J. V,'s compiled a tine record. These boys deserve a lot of credit tor their spirited play. They practiced long and hard only to play before the varsity game to a small crowd. We are looking forward to seeing these boys in Tiger uniforms in the future. Much of the credit for this goes to Coach Clarence Hinkle and his fine staff, Joe Kotys and Don l-lulick. SWIMMING Cuyahoga Falls has long been a swim- ming power in the greater Akron area. This year we are especially proud of our tankers. Winning the city swim crown for the seiond straight year, they won the applause and admiration of the entire student body. As well as a fine team effort, the Tigers dis- played some fine individual performances. John Creed won the Jack Taylor Memorial Award given each year to the outstanding swimmer in the area. With a hint of better things to come, Sophomore Randall Larson placed fifth in the State Diving Finals. This season, as in years past, the Tiger swimmers met Buchtel for the City Champi- onship. The Griffins jumped to an early lead and held a slight edge throughout most of the meet. Falls gamely fought back, and as the final event drew near the score was tied. ln a brilliant finish, the freestyle relay team brought the meet and the title to our schcol once again. Mrs. Parr, Senior Advisor. In ourselves our future lies. CLASS HISTORY The first week of classes was one of up- heaval and readjustment for the sophomore class of l957. Initiation struck terror into the heart of even the bravest sophomore and filled the upperclassmen with glee. With this enthusiastic welcome, the seniors of i960 began the first of their three years at Falls High. This first yeor was devoted mainly to studies. Nevertheless, there was active par- ticipation in the various school organizations. At the end of the year, the members of the Junior Executive Committee were chosen. This committee supervised the selection of class colors and class jackets. Blue ond navy became the official col- ors of the class of l96O. The appearance of the jackets did much to unify the class as juniors. As a result, there was a great deal of class competition that year. When the class rings arrived, the competition was re- vived with even more vigor. The junior class had many reasons for being proud of itself. Many of its members gained recognition for outstanding scholastic abilities. ln athletics, juniors proved to be more than capable. In the field of dramatics, too, the juniors were not without honors, win- ning the one-oct play festival for l959. The highlight of the year, though, was the Junior Prom. This was the biggest event of the year for many and climaxed all the fun and excitement of the preceding months. The election of class officers was the last act of the class as juniors. Chosen to head the seniors of l96O were Pete Hitler- President, Molly Pancoast - Vice-President, Sandy Wendt - Secretory, and John Creed - Treasurer. The class of l96O reached the height of its power in this its last year. Pride and loy- alty to their class were exhibited to the high- est degree by the new seniors. They were the leaders and set out to prove their copo- bilities as such. They succeeded in captur- ing honors in scholarship, leadership, music, and athletics and proved to be equal to the task of organizing and producing the school paper and the annual, the Cuyahogan. Early in the year, several money-making projects were initiated to finance the ex- penses of graduation and other year-end acti- vities. Among these were the sale of pens and fruit cakes and also the annual Senior Ham Dinner. All of the activities these pro- jects financed occurred in the last semester of the year. There were Baccalaureate serv- ices, the Senior Banquet, a tea, the Senior Prom, and an all-night party. The greatest event by far, however, was graduation night. This officially ended three years of hard work and opened the door to the future. A MESSAGE WITH A SMILE Her smile had the power To chase away the blues And her bubbling happy spirit Formed a friend you d want to choose Sincere concern was with her In every word she said And friendship was important In the busy life she led At school she worked to give her best In clubs and school work too And always brightened someones day With Hi and How are you? And with us she leaves the message To brighten someone s day And smile just as she did With a friendly word to say Written by classmate Jean Bartlett Calvin Van Noy was a good student and athlete His friends knew him as an honor student and as a fine strong athlete He loved football and he gave his best at all times We are not at all sure what Calvin was called upon to go through that led to his tragic end but of this much we are sure that God is great enough good enough and loving enough to care for him throughout eternal life and we commit Calvm to God s loving care Excerpt from address by Dr Mumma I I I I v A 1 ' - II -11 11 II I , . Responsible for all the daytime janitorial duties, he also supervises the efficient night mainte- nance crew. Good-by, Mr. Roberts Gilbert Roberts came to Cuyahoga Falls in l9l9 as a classroom teacher and ath- letic coach. During the almost 40 years that he has served Cuyahoga Falls schools, he has been teacher, coach, principal, superintendent, and finally for the last l2 years, the teacher of high school American History and Government. Always a stal- wart builder and an enthusiastic advocate of youth, Mr, Roberts has also served his community as a leader and outstanding citizen, These words of an unknown poet well express the feelings of his students and friends for Mr. Roberts: BUILDING A TEMPLE A builder builded a temple, l-le wrought it with grace and skill. Pillars and grains and arches All fashioned to work his will. Men said as they saw its beauty lt shall never know decay. Great is thy skill, O Builder: Thy fame shall endure for aye. A teacher builded a temple With loving and infinite care. Planning each arch with patience. Laying each stone with prayer. None praised his unceasing efforts None knew of his wondrous plan For the temple the teacher builded Was unseen by the eyes of man. Gone is the builder's temple, Crumbled into the dust, Low lies each stately pillar, Food for consuming rust. But the temple the teacher builded Will last while the ages roll, For that beautiful unseen temple ls a child's immortal soul. l59 CONGRATULATIONS SENIORS i PORTAGE TRAIL CUYAHOGA FALLS REUTHER MOLD 81 MANUFACTURING CO.
