SAURER ln addition to his many duties as Assistant Principal and Dean of Boys, Mr. Saurer serves on the yearbook staff as business manager. We the staff wish to single him out as one who merits these words of appreciation for his constant efforts on our behalf. IN APPRECIATION MISS SALLY SEARS Miss Sears has for many years guided the various yearbook staffs in their efforts to produce artistic, complete, and interesting records of each year's activities. Our thanks to her has a special mean- ing this year, howeverg since she became ill we have come to rea- lize even more keenly the many responsibilities she has borne with us and for us. It is our hope that her recovery may be complete, and that she will once again be able to assume her duties as year- book advisor and English teacher. 3 'Y' :ur - -nr- rf.- -T! ... I I If 'Il qnmnv- .' .' ' LESTER A. rr.J!l'!EATLEY DEDICATION . . . . . The 1956 Cuyahogan is respectfully dedicated to Mr. Lester A. Wheatley, who has faithfully kept school for some 30 years, 14' of which have been here at Falls High. At times blunt, biting, and opinionated, Mr. Wheatley is also stimulating, energetic, and dedicated to his duties. Beneath a gruff ex- terior he conceals a soft spot for his students that sometimes reveals itself as he tells them tales of his adventures and experiences. We graduating seniors hope that the years ahead will be kind to Mr. Wheatley, and will bring him many happy recollections of his days here at Falls High with us. BOARD Standing L. to Mr. Reid Mr. Sophrin Mr. Cooper Seated Mrs. Skeels Mr. Walker R A OF EDUCATION One organization which the student body should never neglect to recognize is the Board of Education. It provides the school system with teachers, buildings, books and equipment. The group is composed of five citizens elected for a term of two years. The Board meets with DR. STEINHAVER the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent twice a month to form the policies for guiding the affairs of the public schools in the community. The graduating classes of 1956 wish to express to the Board of Education their appreciation for the opportunities it has offered them. MR. SECRIST THE SUPERINTENDENT SPEAKS. . . How? ln Indian language the word uhowl' may be a greeting, but as used above it is meant to raise a question. How can we house the high school pupils in the future? During the time the members of the present graduating class have been in school we have seen the construction of Sill School, Richardson School, two 4- room units at Crawford School, Elizabeth Price School, Harvey Bolich School, two additions at Sill School, and much renovation in our older schools. We have witnessed the gradual elimina- tion of the eighth and ninth grades from the high school building. ln a few years our present high school build- ing will be too small to house just the senior high grades. Our plans are to construct an addition to the present plant to care for these future space needs. Such things as more industrial arts shop space, better laboratory facilities, better facilities for the fine arts, and more classrooms for the so called academic areas are in the program. A modern kitchen with a combination study hall- dining room will relieve our overcrowded library- study hall situation and eliminate the need of using the rear of academic classrooms for study hall pur- poses. A gymnasium large enough to seat 2,000 people will mean that we no longer will have to trek to Sill School for home basketball games and will also mean that we will have a place large enough to hold a single assembly instead of the three-session assembly programs necessitated by our present small auditorium. More adequate out- door physical education and intramural activities will be provided when the present athletic field is moved to the Bolich site. No, these plans may not mean anything to you but they mean much to the pupils who follow you. You have lived under these conditions so your understanding of the need and your help in getting others to understand will be most helpful. Ugh, ugh- Which translated means Continued success along your chosen path. .J M480-162, Mr. Gordon M. DeWitt, our principal, received his B.S. Degree from Kent State University and his M.A. Degree at Ohio State University. The teachers at Cuyahoga Falls High School in No- vember, l954, presented him with a lifenrrem- bership to the National Education Association and earlier, in 1949, the boys at Falls High pre- sented him with a life membership to the Hi-Y. This year he will complete his twenty-third year as principal at our school. Mr. DeWitt enjoys traveling and amateur photography and has a collection of some 1500 colored slides taken while on his trips. Outside of school he is a member of the Kiwanis club and an active member of the First Methodist Church, where he teaches Sunday School. Through our four years here at Falls High Mr. DeWitt has been very highly respected for the help and guidance he has given us, both with our studies and social affairs. ln future years when our thoughts drift back to the alma mater, Mr. DeWitt will always be first among our memories. FROM OUR PRINCIPAL. . . During this school year all of us have been Writing a chapter in our book of life. Included in that chapter is to be found a re- cord of many experiences. Some have been most pleasantg some have been less pleasant. Many problems have faced us. Some we have solved easily, some with difficultyg and some remain unsolved. Through it all we have grown and matured in our Way of life. The great creator to whom we owe our very existence so designed and planned our way of life that we must meet challenges. To the extent that we meet them and solve them unselfishly, to that extent we are fulfilling our duties as human beings. This issue of the Cuyahogan should serve as sort of an index, helping us to recall the activities centering around Cuyahoga Falls High School which brought to us pleasant and worthwhile experiences as we were meet- ing the challenges of the year. fgmarfw M. 49441455- DEAN OF GIRLS Mrs. Elizabeth Ellis has served as Dean of Girls and Assistant Principal of Cuyahoga Falls High School since 194-0. Her duties include var- ious phases of guidance for girls and the care of the girls' attendance records. She is chairman of the Freshman Advisory Committee and advisor for the Cuyahoga Falls Student Council. In addition she teaches two classes of psychology. Her quiet efficiency and calm demeanor will long be remem- bered by those of us who have felt her influence in our lives. DEAN OF BOYS Mr. Howard D. Saurer received his BS. Degree from the College of Wooster and did graduate work at Akron University. He serves as a sponsor for the tenth grade, as advisor for the Hi-Y, and as Faculty advisor for the Cuyahogan business staff. Outside of his busy school schedule, he en- joys gardening and playing golf, and is a member of the Falls Rotary Club. The students of Falls High will remember him not only as a teacher and dean, but also as a friendly advisor to all who seek his counsel. IN MEMORIAM . . . I cannot say and I will not say That he is dead-I-Ie is just awayl With a cheery smile and a wave of hand He has wandered into an unknown land, And left us dreaming how very fair It needs must be, since he is there. EARL R WELKER HE IS NOT DEAD James Whitcomb Riley And you-O you, who the wildest yearn For an old time step, and the glad return, Think of him faring on, as dear In the love of There as the love of Here, Think of him still the same, I say, He is not dead-he is just away. 10 MR. TIGER TALES STAFF Under the direction of Miss Louise Flickinger, Room 117 really hums. The clicking of typewriters and the clanging of the various drawers are some of the sounds that may be heard when the staff is trying to meet a deadline. Under the watchful eye of the editor, Harold Shaver, the paper comes out every three weeks. Additional money is earned by the sale of candy after school. 84 S TTT CLASS LEADERS WOMANHOOD AWARD DONNA SMITH LEADERSHIP AWARDS ROGER CLAYPOOLE IOANNE SAGADENCKY MANHOOD AWARD BRUCE ECKSTEIN NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Row One, Bottom: Betsy Sanderson, Donna Smith, Susan Drake, Judy Walker, Mary Prentice, Carol Haas, Dorothy Fauser, Helen Chenot, Cheryl McDonald, Catharine Keer. On this, the last page of our tenth anniversary Cuyahogan, it seems fitting and proper to pay my respects to those members of the faculty and staff who have contributed time and talents above and beyond what could reasonably be expected of them. To Mr. DeWitt, whose confidence in the staff and me inspired us to carry the task through in spite of the many diffi- culties occasioned by the sudden misfortune of Miss Sears, to photographer Mr. John Moore, who put himself out for us and our book time and againg to Mrs. Genevieve Wilhelm, for invaluable co-operation and assistance in artistic aspects of the book, to Mr. Don Leahy of the Inter-Collegiate Press, for ready assistance and encouragement in every detail of yearbook pro- duction, to students Rosemary Smith, Barbara Weisheit, Dorothy Fauser, Sally Wilsoli, Phil Kirk, Tom Mullins, Pat Fleming, Sheila Mulcahy, and others who willingly and pleasantly responded to my many calls for student assistance, and lastly, to my wife and children, Terry, Jimmy, and Susie, who were sentenced to many hours of solitude during the preparation of this 1956 Cuyahogan, I owe and acknowledge a sincere debt of appreciation.
