We hope in this small way to show our heartfelt thanks to a man who has labored so untiringly to give us the best which education has to offer. Mr. Roberts has served the school sys- tem of Cuyahoga Falls for twenty- nine years as teacher, principal and superintendent. This year he again resumed his teaching duties as head of the history department. His hu- mor, wit, and bits of advice, along with hisi presentation of history, have made room 213 dear to his senior history students. For these reasons and many more we dedi- cate our book to Mr. Roberts, a marvelous teacher, a wonderful man, a true friend. We especially wish to express our thanks to the Board of Education because it provides the fundamentals, such as teachers, buildings, and books for out edu- cation. This group is composed of five citizens, elected for a term of two years. It meets with the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent of schools twice a month to form the policies for guiding the school affairs of our community. We realize thot an increase in enrollment and the high cost of living have greatly multiplied the problems which these citizens face and that their job is by no means an easy one. 8 ADMINISTRATICN MR. Our cage team of 1948-49 can go into the record books as a very successful season. They finished the regular sea- son with a record of twelve wins against four losses. Fall was captained by John Hester, an outsanding ball handler. The Tigers, who played o deliberate type of ball, contrasted with the fast hit-and-run type that most of the squads used. Coach Watson's Bangels were riding high in the tournament after downing Elyria and then Massillon, who previously snapped our seven game win streak at the beginning of the season, but who lost in a heartbreaker to St. Vincent. Coach Watson says he will be around next season to coazh, what he believes, will be an even better team. lt ,-. lf, RESERVE BASKETBALL The Reserve Basketball team had a very successful season throughout 1948 and '49. They hold a very impressive record of eleven wins against four losses. A slow deliberate type of ball, similar to that used by the varsity squad, was also used by the Reserves. . The Reserves defeated North, East, Cleveland Heights, Ravenna, West, Central, St. Mary's, Garfield, and Newark, while suffering losses to Massillon and the Alumni. Falls split in two games between Kent and St. Vincent. With most of the boys returning next year, Coach Ripley expects to have a better, more experienced team. F RESHMAN BASKETBALL SQUAD A Falls High Frosh had a successful season, although some may not think a won 8, lost 9 is a good record. lt did assure Falls that they may expect great teams in the future. One of the primary purposes of freshman teams is to give every possible pros- pect a chance and not iust to win games. Coach Loughridge deserves due credit for leading the boys this year. The high point men were: Ludwig, Cyril, Reading, and Glenny, in that order. EIGHTH GRADE BASKETBALL TEAM Coach McNea gathered up the boys, who will probablybe the nucleus of our teams to be, and did a commendable iob. The squad often met quintets that were older and more experienced, but our boys were well drilled and consequently respected. Shank boys from l0-A through I2-A operate the visual aids for teachers in all the Falls schools. These boys are chosen for their interest in Visual Education and their dependability, as well as the primary requirement of an above average scholarship record. Not only does the Visual Education Department supple- ment classroom work, but it also participates in several other activities. Sound equipment for football games and assemblies is provided by this department. Noon movies are shown during the winter months for the students' en- tertainment. The department has recently purchased two new screens-one for the auditorium and one for room 308 as well as classroom films. ll3 t HEALTH FIRE DRILL Open wide. Now say, A-a-a-a. That's right. These words may be heard coming from room 204, while Miss Maxine Car- lin, school nurse, is making a routine medical check-up of a student or teach- er. Miss Carlin, a graduate of People's Hospital, is really kept busy caring for all the minor ailments that occur at school. Besides this, eye tests have been given to all students to discover the fit- ness of eyes for school work. A blood count was taken of the teachers, in ac- cordance with State health requirements. Dr. R. M. Brady, general practitioner, visits the high school and grade schools once each week. ? 1 The ringing ot the fire bell interrupts work momentarily while students practice the routine in case a real disaster ever occurs Carrying out of directions in fire drills has been ,greatly improved this past year. GUIDANCE The Guidance Department is under the direction of Mr. R. B. Heuser. lt is located in room 306. This department helps grade school pupils in selecting their high school course and subjects. It also helps high school stu- dents pick their vocation and col- lege. Various tests on aptitude and scholarship are also given under the supervision of this de- partment.
