SWIM Custer's swimming team had a record-breaking year. The team was undefeated in dual city competition but they won two meets and lost three to suburban schools. The team placed second in the city relays and the city meet, trailing Pulaski by eight and eleven points respectively. At the start of the season, Custer lost to Wauwatosa by the score of 61 to 25. After that, the team lost two close meets to Whitefish Bay and Janesville. The rest of the season consisted of victories for the lndians, although some scores were very close. The most rewarding highlights of the season was watching our two All- American candidates Bill Hughes and Ron Herms breaking records in just about every pool in meets throughout the state Bull constantly broke records in the T00 yard breaststroke and quite a few of the records in the l00 yard butterfly Ron Herms shattered records In the T00 yard freestyle and the l50 yard individual medley ln the city meet Ron Herms received first place in the T50 yard individual medley with a record time of l 35 5 and In the lO0 yard freestyle with a record time of 53 seconds Bull Hughes won first place rn the T00 yard butterfly and the l00 yard breaststroke with record times of l 03 and l l0 9 respectively Jerry Brukbacher took first place in the 50 yard freestyle with a record time of 246 seconds Bob Mantell Dave Taylor Ron Barns John Kramer Gerald Stehllng Dave Port Dennis Durian and John Verity also placed in the city meet The Frosh Soph team and some returning Varsity members look very promising for next years squad The outstanding swimmers include Jerry Brukbacher Dave Taylor Jim lhlenfeld and John Verity COACH HENDERSON Ronald Herms Doug Ehler .1 ZQ 4' 'Qs C I I ' I I ' I I I I 3 H .. 5 gi l wwe.
