W'fred Schmid Whats In a Name. Once upon a time a great DANE , famous as an ARCHER , lived with his wife in the northern woods. Not a CLOUD appeared in the sky on the initial day of their trip, and as they regretfully bade farewell to their neighbors, the WO0DSONS , and to their fa- vorite hauntsg the song of many a warbling BIRD was registered among the forest hymns. In the semi-dark- ness the husband was still able to POLK around gathering boughs and leaves for a resting place, since they did not pack a COTT-ER a pillow. Despite fatigue they slept intermittently, for the BALL of a calf and the HOWELL of a WOLFE , disturbed their peace, which they hoped they might 'TWD-LATER . Thus endeth an episode lacking all of Poe's prescribed essentials. .F dm O Q x Q ' f '1 . ...... fi X 1 WC V' .A I ,-. -N , . H -----K ! . I xx? C TRACK MEET On April 23, 1938, Custer County High School was host at the first annual Southeastern Montana Track and Field Meet. Our track team came out with flying colors winning the meet with fifty-eight points, as follows: Waldo, first in the half-mile and mile runs, Nelson, first in the 220 and second in the hundred yard. Wieckman did his share by winning first in the hundred and third in the 220 yard dash. Cotton scored two firsts on the high hurdle and low hurdle races and also placed second in the discuss throw. Minkoff sailed through the air far enough to cap- ture first in the broad jump, Muri, took second in the 220 and 440 yard dashes, Miller took first in the 440 yard dash and Wilder first in the javelin. As a result of the efforts of these boys, Custer County was able to keep the track cup for meet winners and, by Virtue of winning first in the relay, also captured the relay cup. Our relay team was made up of Nelson, Minkoff, Wieckman, and Miller. Gold, silver, and bronze medals were awarded individual victors. The two cups won by the school will be an added attraction to our trophy cases. Custer placed second with sixteen points, and Forsyth third with fifteen points. Other schools in order of their standing were Hysham, Jordan, Baker, and Plevna. Ismay, Cohagen, and Ekalaka also entered the meet. TI-IIS AND THAT THREE-PIANO RECITAL The Northwestern Conservatory of Music presented one hundred-fifty artists in a. three-piano recital at the High School Auditorium on April 21. Tiny tots delight- fully performed in a Rhythm Orchestra. Esther C. Benson, M. M., director, gener- ously donated the proceeds to our 1938 Branding Iron Fund, SENIOR CAKE SALE If at three-fifteen you happened to see a mad rush to the main floor of the building, you needn't have been alarmed, for it was one of those Senior Cake Sales that always sent the whole school on the run. Not once, not twice, but three times students appeared for delicious slices of chocolate cake or tantalizing cocoanut macaroons. Many even bought whole cakes. Who could resist? Dear Dr. Foolum: After taking six bottles of your famous Cure-all Appendicitis Symptoms' Remedy, six members of the graduating class have submitted to appendectomy operations. Hoping you are the same, fSignedl The Seniors SENIORS DESIGNATE SELVES BY EMBLEMS The emblems wom by the seniors are fashioned of blue and gold felt. The blue bucking bronco and cowboy, insignia of C.C.H.S., is superimposed on a background of gold. At the top of the emblem is the year 1938 and the initials of the school, C.C.H.S. SENIOR NO-DATE DANCE The no-date dance sponsored by the seniors was proclaimed the most successful dance of the school year. Novelty dances including a spot dance, a multiplier dance, 9, senate dance, a senior boy and frosh co-ed dance, and a broom tag, added interest to the occasion. The presiding judge of a Kangaroo Court assessed fines for dating, using pro- grams, being wall-flowers, and other violation of the prescribed rules.
