FOOTBALL Although Custer's 1936 football eleven didn't bring home the championship football honors of the fall season as Custer teams have done in many previous years, theteam showedoutstanding merit in many games. Newely instated head coach Walt Griffin and assistant coach Ken Smith, built their squad around two returning lettermen, Art Erickson and Harold Luke. The Custer starting 1.ne-up usually in- cluded Wickersham and Stacy, enolsg Al or Gus Waldow and Minkoff, guardsg Jacobs anb Strom, tackles: Bray, centerg Nelson, quarter- backg Patch and Towlerton, halfbacksgand Erickson, fullback, Dunn ahay Tedesco, ends, and Gilmer and Luke, in the baekfield also figured in many games. No regular captain headed the squad, but coach Griffin appointed a team member to act as captain for each game.At the close of the season, lettermen elected Dom Patch honorary 1936 captain, and chose Ralph Bray to pilot the Custer squad through their clashes in the 1937 season. Assistant coach Ken Smith awarded twenty-three numerals to the following players: Dom Patch, Ralph Bray, Art Erickson, Al- bert Waldow, Gustave Waldow, Mike lVlink0ff,Chester Stack, Harold Luke, Roy Dunahay,Leslie Trafton,Forrest Bourn,.lames Wickersham, Stan Nelson, Robert Feeley, Lloyd Mclvlullin, Albert Remillong, Eugene Gilmer, Bob Stacy, james Towlerton, Edward Van Dyke, Cliff Strom, Vernon Cotton, Roy .iIacobs, and Dan Tedesco. Then the boys left on their ann- ual Christmas trip through the western part of the state. Play- ing three games in as many nights and traveling each day, the Griffin basketeers lost to Livingston and Missoula, but defeated Anaconda. Roundup came to town and slipped a 2 point victory over on the local five. After this the quint settled down to a little teamwork in their next game--against Missoula. 'lhe visitors, coached by Eddie Chinske, Custer's athletic mentor for five years, overpowered them, despite flashy playing on the part of Rehn, Horr, Erickson, Gilmer, and Nelson. Aroused by their last few defeats, the Cowboys went to town and swamped the Fergus Eagles to the tune of 46 to 21. Gilmer and Nelson were high point men with twelve points apiece. The Billings Broncs nosed out Custer in a 33 to 32 thriller, January 22. Frank Rehn played some exceptional ball and Horr, Erickson, Nelson and captain Gilmer also did themselves credit. January 29, Glendive emerged second best from a game with the Cowboys, Anaconda, aroused by their defeat earlier in the season, took a close game from the boys February 6. Custer now entered on a streak of bad luck and lost the next three games in a row. They were against Glendive, Dickinson, and Billings. The Divisional Tournament was held in Billings from March 3 to 6. Custer took Butte Central for fourth place in the tour- ney. Livingston took the divisional as well as the State champ- ionship. Letters were awarded the following players: Art Erickson, Eugene Gilmer, Frank Rehn, James Towlerton, Everett Horr, Stan Nelson, Bill Cotter, Joe Kelley, Jim Wickersham, Ralph Bray and Manager Albert Remillong. Cotter and Wickersham were elected co-captains for the com- ing season. .80. THE FINAL WORD As the poet said, all good things must come to an end. And so may we take this opportunity to pay our- selves a compliment: express the hope that you have found and will continue to find much pleasure in this book: and to make known our appreciation to every-one who helped us in the evolution of the 1937 UBRANDING IRON. To Mr. A. A. Morang of the Miles City Studio, who took our group pictures, to the Multigraph Sales Agency, who made our cuts, to Tom Shaneyfelt in the typing department, to the local merchants who cooper- ated with us and advertised in our book and to our fac- ulty advisers--Nat Kutzman-4Pete Spraines--and Dick Farnsworth-- thanks a million. THE END -91-
