Uwz, Sclwnl dud '7laf1bnaL Qnfnlun, When all the rest of the world planned natuonal defense actuvutues our school was by no means suttung udle Here too youth was engaged un the confluct We served among the ranks of the cuvuluan army Our gurls found theur but to do when they enrolled un the home nursung classes After a delay caused by the prolonged waut for books the classes pro gressed smoothly Thus course was organuzed for the purpose of unstructung gurls to help around home We learned the art of bed makung and care for the chuld un the home whuch at the tume amused us but some day may aud us ummensely At the end of these sessuons we all felt that we had benefTted by the fauthful guud ance of our unstructor and looked forward to the tume when we could put unto practuce our newly acquured knowledge Other gurls who took the solduers health to heart struggled wuth a sweater or scarf hopung when ut was funushed ut would somewhat resemble what ut was untended for Proud were we of our classes un first aud Throughout the school system pupuls worked unterestedly un emergency technuques many of them qualufued for the Red Cross badge Over one hundred students followed unstructors advuce whule an even greater number antucupated classes under the supervusuon of a reg ular teacher The boys also dud theur share They kept contunually busy collectung papers and magazunes and other artucles whuch could be used to some advantage Others were assugned to posts at whuch they looked sharp for planes Each one was kept busy doung maybe not what he enuoyed but somethung whuch he hoped would be of some consequence un the lufe of an older brother who was engaged un the real fightung Our small tots played a potent part un thus druve As defense stamps were an unnovatuon un theur young luves savung dumes had an appeal whuch proved greater than the temptung candues and many a bar was passed up so Johnnue could buy a stamp to add to hus ever uncreasung collectuon All un all we were a very busy but satusfied luttle army grateful that no matter how small we mught be there was always some luttle thung we could do to help wun thus war The Echo Page Ten 1 ' 1 I - . , I - I . . . . . , - 1 I I I . , . 1 1 1 . - H ' ll 1 I r
