FORWARD The United States must remain militarily strong to preserve in the world the concepts on which our way of life is based — the ideas of individual dignity and freedom, of a government based upon a faith in spiritual values and deriving its power and authority from consent of the governed. This book presents a pictorial record of the officers and men of the U.S.S. Curtiss (AV-4) during the period 1955-1956, and a part of the story of events and activities that played a significant part in developing the naval strength and military power of the nation. For security reasons the complete story cannot be told. However, this book portrays representative sketches of the life and activities on board ship. Each member of this outstanding Curtiss crew can share and take pride in the knowledge of many memorable, laborious and essential tasks well done. B. L. BAILEY Captain, U. S. Navy, Commanding
