The many activities of the school, which are featured in this book, illustrate the enthusi- asm of the Curtis Falcons. I congratulate each of you for partici- pating in these worthwhile events. This yearbook will keep the memories of 1968-69 for you. May the experiences of this year inspire each of you to greater things in the years ahead. s u , This is Mr. Budd's first year as Principal of Curtis Junior High. For the past eleven years he has been the vice principal at Southeast. His main hobbies include camp- ing, fishing, and golfing. He also likes to study the fluctuations ofthe stock market. Mr. Budd has two sons, one who is al graduate of Curtis. His older son is presently n jtuiior nt Wichita State uni- versity. and the younger one is a junior at Southeast. He considers his main jobs as principal to work with and evaluate teachers, to oversee the school budget, and to talk with parents about matters that affect their students. MR, LANE, Vice Principal Mr. Robert Lane has been our vice principal at Curtis for two years. He received his bachelor's degree at Friend's University, and :1 m:ister's degree at Kansas State University. At the present, he is working on a specialist degree at Wichita State University. Before Mr. Lane came to Curtis as our vice principal, he taught sixth grade in the county for two years and history at Truesdell for three years. As one of the most important and well-liked persons in our school, Mr. Lane considers his principal duty discipline. He is also in charge of schedules, assemblies, the school calendar, attendance, textbooks, locks, and lockers. Mr. Lane also performs any task his boss, Mr. Budd, delegates to him. Outside of school, Mr. Lane likes to hunt, fish or play softball. His family is his wife and son, Timmy, who is one year old. Curtis Building Committee The faculty of each school is required to elect rr school building committee. Custcdians SCHOOL LIFE ART Curtis Arwepartment is one of the finest in the city of Wichita. Art is offered to the seventh and ninth grades and is taught by Miss McPherson, Mr. Rothfelder and Mrs. Wynkoop. SCIENCE Science, as a study, helps students to learn more of what went on in the world of yesterday, what goes on today, and what will be in the world of tomorrow. Laboratory science is a required subject for all ninth grade students. Learning about chemicals, symbols, formulas, and equa- tions is very important in Lab. Science. Biology may be an elective. For seventh and eighth grade pupils, General Science helps in the understanding of their environ- ment. SPEECH THERAPY Cathy Coleman and Lana. MATH This year there is a total of forty-four math classes at Curtis. To teach all these classes, Curtis has nine very well qualified math teachers. Mr. Ales' ninth grade math class. By know- ing the activities of the past, the present can be better understood and the future more predictable. CURTIS LIBRARY Three students are busy using the materi- als in the Audio-Visual Center of the library. Other students are looking up sources of A'V material. One of the Eighth Grade Home Economics Classes. HOME ECONOMICS Girls are iirst inmnduccd to Home Economics as a. required eighth grade course. Ninth grade girls take it its an elective. Karen Covington, Karen Minter, and Buelah Pmett teach these courses. SPECIAL EDUCATION This is the ioxu-th year that Special Education has been offered at Curtis. All other junior high school in Wichita, except one, make this course available. The Curtis Class has wventy-four students and two teachers, Mr. Leach and Mrs. Duvall. GENERAL SHOP General shop is I1 required course for eighth grade boys. One semester of this two semester course is devoted to electricity. The other semester the students do a project of woodworking, metals, and mechanical drawing. rr., it S . ,ff -. h I 513.43 MUSIC AT CURTIS The Cadet Band is composed almost entirely of sev- enth graders. They study basics of music in prepar- ation for Concert Band. The Concert Band is composed of seventh and eighth graders. They study basic principles involved in per- formances. Symphonic Baud, composed of scvcnth, eighth, and ninth graders, is the main performing band. Ad- vanced performing techniques are emphasized in this group. The Orchestra, composed of seventh, eighth, and ninth grade strings and the best available winds, is the main performing group. This group studies ad- vanced orchestral techniques. For the eighth grade there are boys and girls glee clubs, conducted by Mr. Everett,Craven. For the ninth grade there is a mixed chorus conducted by Mr. Irl German. From the mixed chorus, the best singers may be chosen for the boys, girls, or mixed ensemble. At the end of the year, each group gives a concert. The aim of the members is to serve the community. This club is one of the first formed clubs at Curtis. Red Cross has adopted a care home for elderly women. On each holiday they take fa- vors to the home. Other projects during the year were making placemats for the Vet- erans Hospital, repairing toys at Christmas time, and preparing Christmas boxes for our servicemen in Viet Nam. DRAMA CLUB , . The Curtis Drama Club is an organizauon formed for students interested in drama amd public acting. Under the direction of Miss Taylor and Mrs. Duvall, several plays were presented during the year. COIN CLUB The Coin Club is the new- est and smallest club in Curtis. The main purpose of the club, according to their sponsor Mr. Perry, is to acquaint students with the value of native and foreign coins.
