Curtis was born january 25, 1860. His mother was an Indian princess, and his father was a native of Indiana. As a boy, Charles sold oranges near the railroad station at Topeka. Because of his great horsemanship, he became a jockey in order to work his way through law school, Charles was admitted to the bar in 1881. While serving in the Senate and as Vice President, Charles had little time for his favorite sport, fishing. We, the students of Curtis junior I-Iigh, are proud to have our school named after the Kansan who became Vice President of the United States of America. BONWELL Q Y Mr. Bonwell, our principal, came to Curtis Junior High School when it opened in 1953. Since then the enrollment has grown from 590 to 1235. Mr. Bonwell graduated from the Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia. I-Ie received his Masters Degree from Stanford University, California. Before com- ing to Curtis, he was principal at Park, Waco, Robinson, and Hamilton. Few people realize that Mr. Bonwell is an excellent photographer and a fisherman. He also enjoys woodworking and camping. We, the students of Curtis, would like to express our appreciation to Mr. Bonwell for helping Curtis become one of the best schools in Wichita. This copy of Curtis Profile will afford you many happy memories in the years ahead. You will always have pride in your school and the many fine opportunities you have had to be a part of its activities. You are a great group of kids and I hope you will continue to grow and develop to the best of your abilities. I know you will look back 'many times and say, Curtis was the best. 5 I I GUR VICE-PRINCIPAL I Mr. Robert Lane has been our vice- principal at Curtis for one year. He previously taught at South Riverside MR. ROBERT LANE and Truesdell junior High. Mr. Lane ' p had all his formal education in Wichita 4 schools and graduated from Friends University with a B.
