' uf Iv- , f lqfllpe When we analyze history, we tend to disparage the of our ancestors. When we consider that one day people will amused by our civilization when it too becomes antiquated, we stop to ask ourselves, How important is progress in the field of art? One might answer, Just as the wheel made the automobile possible, so cave wall paintings became modern art. There is little difference between primitive art and our modern impressionistic work. During the Renaissance, art reached a degree of perfection which today is rarely equaled and was much appreciated by the majority of the people. This does not mean that today art is not important. In our 4' ,fr in X V i-:Rf-fm, generation, we use the well established forms of art such as painting, if f il: Yimi . ,ixtgv-, scul ture, and architecture to form a backdro for our modern lively 1 .- Hxixxlk P P 511-1 if mls, arts, most of us would much rather view a television program than go 5 ,,,f--A X, 'X to an art exhibit. It is gratifying ta believe that your interest in the history of the creative genius of man has been inspired to some degree by what you have been taught in Curtis. It has been truly said that Art hath no enemy but ignorance. There are few enioyments in this life which are more soul-satisfying than the pleasure derived from a whole-hearted appreciation of the true and the beautiful. Great writers have sought to define great art in a variety of ways. Ralph Waldo Emerson calls it The path of the creator to his worlr g James Huneker says that it is an instant arrested in eternity g Henry James maintains that it is nothing more than the shadow of humanity. Certainly its quality is imperishable and its inspiration everlasting, The following lines of Theophile Gautier have been quoted often: All passes. Art alone Enduring stays to us. The Bust outlasts the throne,- The coin, Tiberius. I wish the members of the Class ot T959 every success and source of happiness. In doing so, I cannot resist the impulse to paraphrase a remark - of George Jean Nathan and urge you to reach out into the world for vagrant beauty and strive to imprison it in a tangible dream. Q RussortS1udio Principal Siudio Grade Adviser UEDICATIU The theme of our Yearbook is Art Through the Ages. Just as art has pro- gressed through the ages, the works of painters, sculptors, and architects making its development possible, so have we, the Class of 1959, progressed through four years at Curtis, the invaluable support and counsel of our grade adviser making our advancement possible. A grade adviser is one who not only plans student subject-groupings for graduation, but one who gives of his free time to make the class proms success- ful, one who not only takes care of class dues, class elections and myriads of minor functions, but one who, most of all, unstintingly guides members of his class through their school difficulties. Mr. Goldin is iust such a person. We seniors look upon him not merely as a faculty member, but as a lovable friend from whom we may ask advice and from whom we may be certain of receiving what we seek. We realize that nothing can materially supplant these attributes and the dedication of purpose which he possesses. We therefore, in all gratitude, dedicate this, our Yearbook, to Mr. Oscar Goldin, our grade adviser. One of the aims of the Arista, as stated in the induction pledge, is . . . to support only those things which look to the encourage- ment and highest development-physically, socially, intellectually, and morally-of its members . . . That this aim fthe words the student body or the community may be substituted for its members i, has been fulfilled, is evidenced by the numerous duties and services Arista performs. Among these are tutoring fellow students, ushering for all important school functions, selling tubercu- losis bangles and supporting a Greek war orphan, John Vrentzos, through the selling of Johnny Buttons. By its very existence Arista further accomplishes the above aim, by providing a goal for which all students can strive. Loyalty, efficiency, helpfulness, service and scholarship are necessary attributes for a student to have in order to be elected to Arista. Leadership, personality and citizenship are also looked for. Two iuniors are chosen in their fifth term by a selected group of teachers called the Senate. From then on, any student who has placed his name on the honor roll for the two previous terms becomes eligible. The entire faculty and the Senate vote on this list before it reaches the Arista members themselves. They then choose a pre-determined number of students, on a percentage basis, for membership, basing their decisions on the aforementioned qualities and upon their personal knowledge of the character and integrity of the candidates. H ICE In any large organization there are certain iobs that have to be done and certain services ren- dered for which little thanks and recognition are received. There can be found in Curtis many such positions in which teachers and students work behind the scenes, carrying out essential services without which our school could not function ef- fectively. Many students find it worth their while to work in one or another of the various offices scattered throughout the school. On the main floor can be found the clerical offices which include the working quarters of the administration, the grade advisers, the college adviser, and the attendance co- ordinator. Moving upstairs, one finds the English office, occupied by Mr. Seitzman and his workers. Ascending to the next level, one sees an abun- dance of offices sandwiched between classrooms. Miss Caccamo presides over the ever-busy Social Studies office. The fast-moving Business Education office is headed by Mr. Neinstein. Miss Richter directs the Math squad, operating out of a barely noticeable cubbyhole numbered 358. Leaving the third floor and climbing still higher, one discovers the Modern Language office hidden in a remote spot on the fourth floor. Mr. Raichle supervises the work in this retreat. All of the aforementioned members of the faculty are heads of their respec- tive departments. What do the students that work in an office do? Their iobs vary from operating a switchboard, typing, filing, or stenciling, to carrying books, mimeographing, running errands or setting up a movie proiector. Amid test tubes and microscope slides many stu- dents, working in the science labs, find their labors both interesting and rewarding. In the bio. and chem. laboratories, they prepare experiments, set up class demonstrations, show movies, and do odd iobs such as cleaning test tubes, feeding rabbits, and preparing carbon dioxide. Much work on the part of the student body goes into the presentation of our weekly assemblies. The Student Assembly Program Planning Commit- tee, more widely known as SAPPC, plans and polishes the weekly routines. At 9:30 every Wednesday morning, while the band plays dili- gently, ten senior boys with red arm bands care- fully guide about 600 students to their seats. As the music fades into a rhythmic drum beat, the color guard marches proudly up the center aisle bearing the Stars and Stripes. Following the open- ing ceremonies, the stage crew does its part by rearranging the chairs and mikes, adapting the set to the program of the day. In the supply room on the wall opposite the entrance, there hangs a newspaper with the head- line, Supply Room Strikes: Faculty Panics. Though it is meant to be humorous, the mock headline accents an astonishing fact. A well-co-ordinated team of six boys, supervised by Mr. Rice, controls the life-line of the school, distributing such necessi- ties as paper, chalk, erasers, typewriter ribbons, rubber bands, stencils and paper clips. Another small but important group of students can be found working every morning during regis- ter period in the G.O. Store. Besides selling school supplies such as looseleaf paper, pens, book covers and review books, the students have to take inven- tory, order supplies, and keep the store. An important function of education is the incul- cation of the habit of reading. Fortunately, we have at Curtis a well-stocked library where students are able to slake their thirst for printed matter. Librarians Miss Bamber and Mrs. Patton are always ready to assist the confused or stymied reader, and a squad of about thirty pupils is busy through- out the day helping to keep the library running smoothly. In any society there are rules and laws that have to be obeyed, and consequently, there are people whose iob it is to enforce these regulations. Here at Curtis we have a similar situation, our marshals serve as policemen. The lunchroom marshals are responsible for maintaining sanitary conditions in the cafeterias. The post marshals keep the halls orderly during class, the traffic marshals try to ease the situation that occurs when the period bell rings. Also included in this section are seniors who are participating in the Co-operative Education pro- gram under the direction of Mr. Rotman. Barone, P. Bonamo, M. Scotto. Absent: R. Romagnola. It was a long season for Coach Andy Barberi and his White Warriors of the gridiron. Facing possibly the roughest schedule in the entire city, Curtis finished with a record of no wins, six losses, and one tie. However, many things must be taken into consideration which did not show on the scoreboard. Out of the seven teams played, no less than four of them were top football powers in New York City. Our one tie was a tremendous upset with Lafayette High School. This 14-14 game was not easy by any means. With less than three minutes left in the game Curtis, led by Captain John Pietracatella, held their opponents on the three yard line for four downs to preserve their great moral victory. This effort was followed by another top performance against the number one team in the city. Undefeated Stuyvesant seemed to be on their way to an easy victory as they piled up a 22-8 halftime lead. But, typical of the spirit that Coach Barberi and his staff put into their squad, Curtis fought back in the second half to score more points against this team than ever before this year in their 36-22 loss. The famed Turkey Day classic with New Dorp approached. The team worked vary hard to prepare for this game, but all was in vain. Captain Pietrocatella, who excelled throughout the game by making key blocks and devastating tackles, was chosen as Curtis's Most Valuable Player. With many fine lower termers returning, it is a Wait until next year cry on the gridiron. Coach Barberi, Captain Pietracatella The Curtis High School Warriors, coached by Mr. Bert Levinson, former Curtis cager star, defended the P.S.A.L. championship title which they gained last season. Starting with the initial contest of this current series, the Red and White tallied five consecutive wins. But when the cagers returned to the court for the first contests of the new year, they were defeated by Port Richmond and lost a squeaker to New Dorp. New material is good and spirit is high. Newcomers in- clude Lewis Mandell, Bob Follit, Irv Farber, Efrem Sigel, Harold Alexander and Tommy Altman. Under the direction of Mr. Krongold it gave a satisfactory accounting of itself. Everyone concerned with soccer at Curtis is optimistic about the future. This year's team began as an inexperienced but hard working group and by the end of the season it was a highly co-ordinated and successful unit. The golf team, coached by Mr. Gaffney, has made an excellent record during the past years, consistently winning the Staten Island P.S.A.L. crown. The competition for the city championship is more rugged but Curtis has fared well, reach- ing the finals every time for the last thirteen years. Last year, for the first time since 1955, our divot- diggers came through and we won the city title, defeating our arch-rival, Bayside. Coach Gaffney has high hopes for the coming season. Returning lettermen Captain Jerry Lazar and Fred Brandkamp will lead the team in its bid to defend the title.
