,4 Jlflessagefrom the Principal There's a band playing this evening. The night is mild, the win- dows are open, and I can hear the drum, the life, and the trumpet. It must be at the Port of Embarkation. Soldiers are leaving for over- seas, or perhaps they are returning. By the time you read this, more bands will be playing, for the war in Europe will have come to an end. Then, in a few months, our armies will be coming back in large numbers. Flags will flutter on the main avenues of our cities. Crowds will jam the streets. More bands, and the armies will march by with a quick step, heads high, happy and victorious. Our heroes will have returned. That is, all will have returned-except, they fell. In the perpetual fogs of the North Africa, on the beaches of Italy, Normandy, and under the blazing sun sands will lie where they fell. The sun of an American soldier. Rows of crosses places, and the American flag will fly over except those who lie where Aleutians, on the shores of near the invasion coast of of the South Pacific-thou- will never set on the grave will appear in each of these them from sunrise to sunset. These boys have made what we are pleased to call the supreme sacrifice. In any event, they have given everything. But still there remains a question. A solemn question for you and me: Have they died in vain? In another generation, lI1llSt this tragedy be enacted again? Will we, in a few years, set about building more terrible weapons, for a still more terrible conflict? Or will we remember what they died for, and lay the foundation of the new and better world for which they laid down their lives? This is the question you will have to answer-chieHy you who are about to graduate. The new world-good or bad-will be yours to live in. The errors in its construction will plague you in the years to coine. Building this world. you build your own lives. Except it is built with wisdom, they labor in vain that build it. 217. . ,- I
