MY NEXVSPAPER this morning tens me that two more countries have heen trampled on hy the dreadful war machine of one of the Hpowersf' Ancient and lovely cities-Copenhagen, Oslo, and Bergen-the homes of people, friendly, compassionate, intelligent, artistic, musical,-are now plunged into the nightmare of fear and perhaps desolation. Xvith more and more of the world in Hames, with more and more of the ohjects that men and women have huiit in moments of inspiration now de- molished hy savagery, we must aslc, Iiwhat, after au, are the things that are permanentg what can mankind huild that cannot he destroyed?H Great hridges, great puhlic huitdings, iihraries, and even churches are homhedg ships are torpedoed and sunlcg wealth is wiped out. it has been done heforeg it is heing done again. That prohiem, Hxvhat are the permanent things? is one ot the chief questions that we, your teachers, and countless hundreds of other teachers throughout the centuries, have heen trying to answer. An eminent teacher in another time of catastrophe declared: 'The human mind cannot he hurned nor hayonetted, nor wounded, nor missingf, The human mind surety is greater than ferocity and savagery. It is greater than catastrophe, however enormous. It is higger than hate, is more masterful than force. Then the human mind must for us those things that are permanent.
