AT THE POLLS IN 1915 N a large, roomy kitchen on a bright, sunny morning, Mrs. White is bustling about in her quick, nervous way. Suggestive and even tantalizing odors from the oven float out through the open windows. 1 do declare, if it is'nt almost time for me to go to the polls! How the time does Hy, and I haven't the housework half done! Well! that cake must get in, or I'll be late. Two eggs-beaten light-I do hope all the ladies of the W. S. S. will use their opportunities, now that they can vote. It will be a shame, if we don't get what we wantl'-splash-Mrs. White brings her spoon emphatically down into the foamy whites of the eggs, and liberally besmears herself and the floor with them. Hastily two more eggs are made ready for beating. This done and the remain- ing ingredients vigorously stirred in, Mrs. White pours the batter into tins and slips them into the oven, just as a knock is heard at the door. Why, good morning, Mrs. Ritchey! All ready to go to the election? I'm just baking an election cake-won't take but a few moments-do sit down until it is done. HNOW I'm ready. Isn't it a care-all this housework, and bring- ing up children? Come, Will and Ann, you must hurry off to schoolf, Who is your candidate, Mrs. 'White F timid Mrs. Ritchy ven- tures to ask, at last, when they are making their way quickly to the polls. VVell, Mrs. White leisurely says, I shan't vote for Mr. Bow- man, as mayor, because heis got such a gossipy and interfering wife, and sheys a dreadful housekeeper, nor Mr. Towne, because the other day at a bargain counter, his daughter Kate, actually snatched a most beautiful piece of lace right out of my hands. I'm going to vote for that man, who lives on the next corner. He's got a beautiful wife. She dresses so stylishly. Did you ever see her? We have the same milk boy, too. My husband advised me to vote the straight Repub- lican ticket, but I am going to vote for that man, whether he is Re- publican or not. I think women ought to have the right as to whom they wish to vote for. Here we are at the polls. 'Tm going to vote for a lawyer-you know his name, it begins with 'M' and sounds so romanticfl Mrs. Ritchy then said in a con- fidential tone, Mrs, White, can you tell me what those pink slips are Eighty

for, and what we must write on them? I'm so excited, I've forgotten just what my husband told me this morningf' 'fVVhy-ee, I don't know exactly, Mrs. VVhite answered du- bionsly, suppose we ask that man. He looks like an officerf' The voting completed, the two draw a long sigh of relief. Now we have cast our valuable votes. Let us take a trip down- town, and look around a bit before luncheon. I saw some Very low- pricecl lawns advertised, which I would like to look at. There's been such a load taken off my mind, the voting being over, that I will really enjoy looking at bargains. il 'fi' iv. riff Yo JL :iw r I M ' ' ' I f 5 ,iikii 1 fel 99 S Q I Eighty-one
