THE CURTIS CHESS AND CHECKER CLUB T the beginning of the year so-me of the boys who were in- terested in chess and checkers met in Mr. Zipf's room and organized the Curtis Chess and Checker Club. Harold Schmid was elected president and Lester Todd secretary. It was de- cided that meetings should be held every Monday, but this was later changed to every Wednesday. As most of the members were only beginners they decided it would be better not to enter the High School Tournament but to play amongst themselves and, with the assistance of Mr. Zipf, improve as much as possible. Some of the members have developed into fairly good players by this time and it is hoped that in succeeding years interest may be kept up along this line. Sixty-six

HIS LESSON EE was very anxious that he should receive his credit for Ger- man, but still he did not care to study his lessons, for studying did not appeal to Lee. At the beginning of the recitation on Monday the teacher made the assignment for the next day, Study page one hundred and twenty, write the first twenty-ive sen- tences on theme paperf' Lee kept putting off the work and conse- quently was quite unprepared. Lee, you may translate the second paragraphf' said the in- structor. I haven't studied thatf' was the answer. That means zero for today's lesson. VVednesday proved no better. Lee, write the first ten sentences on the boardf, said the teacher when the class came in. I have forgotten my bookf, That is no excuse, was the only comfort he received. Thursday was even worse than Vtfednesday. He had not for- gotten his book but he had not prepared his lesson. The end of the month was drawing near. Lee must end the month with a good recitation. Now besides neglecting his work, Lee was generally in- attentive, and we all know that the pupil who is bored most by his work is the one who does the least work. just live minutes before the bell rang the teacher began, Study Chapter VI. for Friday. Have the sentences written, so that we will waste no time. Write them out neatly, to be handed in. Lee was not listening to the assignment but was watching the clock, anxiously waiting for the last three minutes to go faster. After what seemed almost an hour to Lee, the class was dismissed. As he walked home he resolved to have his lesson learned thoroughly for Fridayg for we must remember Lee wanted to be promoted. All of Thursday evening was spent in hard study. He went to class Friday, confident that his recitation would gain him a high mark. He listened attentively but he could not under- stand what the class was talking about. Alas, poor Lee! He had studied the wrong lesson. When he was called upon to recite he ex- plained the situation to the teacher but she only reprimanded him for being inattentive. Lee realized by bitter experience, which we know is a good teacher, that it is the daily work that counts. Nothing can make up for failure to learn each day's lessons as they come, and to learn them well. S1'xty-.reffeu
