CURTIS ATHLETICS The athletic life of Curtis has not been as active as it might have been,' which is largely due to the lack of school spirit on the part of the pupils. However, last fall the track team under the leadership of Harold Dick was very successful. Of the three meets held with other schools, one resulted in victory for Curtis over Bowen High Schoolg another resulted in a tie with the same school, while the third was a defeat for Curtis by Thornton Township High School. The foot ball, team was not entered in the league, but played several games in which they acquitted themselves very creditably. ' Our, basket ball team did itself great credit this year, finishing second in the league which gave them the privilege of playing in the semi-finals. They were defeated in these by Lane, as they were lack- ingin experience and were outweighted by the latter school. The track team has been reorganized this year with Harold Dick as captain, and they are building air castles on what they hope to do at the Cook County meet. Others are quite confident of securing the individual medal which is awarded the pupil scoring the highest num- ber of points at the Field Day which is held in Palmer Park late in June. Sixty-fam'

THE CURTIS CHESS AND CHECKER CLUB T the beginning of the year so-me of the boys who were in- terested in chess and checkers met in Mr. Zipf's room and organized the Curtis Chess and Checker Club. Harold Schmid was elected president and Lester Todd secretary. It was de- cided that meetings should be held every Monday, but this was later changed to every Wednesday. As most of the members were only beginners they decided it would be better not to enter the High School Tournament but to play amongst themselves and, with the assistance of Mr. Zipf, improve as much as possible. Some of the members have developed into fairly good players by this time and it is hoped that in succeeding years interest may be kept up along this line. Sixty-six
