E. Ekstrom We take pleasure in dedicating our 1951 Year Book The Yellow Jacket Revue to our Vocational Department and those two very able instructors Mr. Merlyn E. Ekstrom, and Mrs. Loyce M. Guthrie. By their loyalty, enthusiasm and service they have endeared themselves to us. They are building at Curry a Vocational Department which is being complimented by all who visit it. We wish for them continued success in their chosen profession. The future will measure the results of the fine work being done by these capable leaders in Community Development . . Mr, Merlyn E. Ekstrom was born in Kremlin, Okla- homa, but attended and graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute at Auburn in 1948, earning both the B. S. Degree in Agriculture Science and Agriculture Education. He has taught Agriculture here for the past two years. He resides at 608 Ninth Avenue, Jasper, Alabama. Mrs, Loyce M. Guthrie was born in Walker County and graduated at the University of Alabama, with the B. S. Degree in Vocational Home Economics. She has taught Home Economics here for the past three years. WALKER COUNTY CHAMPIONS The HCurry Yellow Jacketsn Walker County Champions for the past two seasons, were runners up in the Fifth District Tourna- ment, losing an over time tilt to Warrior High by a 36 to 34 score. They will enter the NState Tournamentn to be held in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Clarence Lee is Captain of the Jackets, and Ed Moles Alternate Captain. EH Moles and John H. Lee were named on the nAll Districtu quintet. The Jackets had a good season winning 22 and losing A. They were also the recipients of the UGood Sportsmanship Awardn from the Fifth District, an honor wthey have won for the past three years. The Curry Jackets won second place in the State meet ' bowing to a strong Priceville quintet in the finals L5 to 49. Curry defeated Monroeville, Bear Creek and Woodland before bowing to Priceville. VALEDICTORIAN SALUTATORIAN John H, Lee Berta Meeks 36 CLASS HISTORY OF 1951 We, like the other classes before us, have no unusual history. we began our days of Readin', Ritin' and Rithmetic about twelve years ago. We have emerged to the position that we now hold, slowly but surely. Each year we took another rung on the ladder of advance- ment. we hope we have accomplished much, but we do not claim anyh thing unusual scholastically. We want to leave our record behind so that the students who come after us may accomplish more in the future than we have in the past. The graduating seniors who started in the first grade are: Ruby Short, Berta Meeks, Betty Williams and.Lilliam Davis. Some of our teachers through the years were Mrs, Farris, Mrs. Fountain, Mrs. Bishop, Mrs. Snow, Miss Miller, Mrs. Durham, M s. Ryan, Mrs. Myers, M . Turner, Mrs. Salmon, and Mrs. Burkett. When we graduated from elementary school Mrs. Durham was our teacher. we felt very proud to receive grammar school diplomas and we were very eager to enter Junior High School the following year. When we entered our first year in high school M s. Burkett was our home room teacher. Then came our Junior II year with Mrs. Ryan as our sponsor. We had our ups and downs like the classes before us, but we finally ended the school term for that year. The next year found us as freshmen with M s. Myers as our home room teacher. We received our diplomas in due time to senior high school As we entered our Sophomore year about thirty new enrolles were added to our class. we had the Science basement as our home room until we moved into the new school building. Mr. Turner was our home room teacher for that year. Our Junio year found us with M s. Salmon as sponsor. Four new members were added to our class. They were Robert Woodley, Nancy Lay, Manda Ruth Wilcutt and J. T. Bruce. Several members were also lost to other schools. In September, 1950, we became Seniors. This year we had M s. Burkett as our Sponsor. We had Lawassa Johnsey and Barbara Bedsole added to our class. Our class has a fair scholastic standard and we sincerely hope it has prepared us for the many problems that will come our way in the future. We hope that these twelve years of school have broadened our minds and that we will have great success in the years to come. Class Historian Lillian Davis 0 37 C L A S S P R O P H E C Y O F '51 I was on my way home from Las Vegas, Nevada, and the train stopped in Jasper for a four hour and thirty minute stop-over. I decided to walk around and see how my old home town had changed in the last twelve years. As I walked into the depot, the porter ran into me. As I turned expecting an apology, I recognized him as Melvin Gay. After talking awahile I asked him about the class of '5l. He began telling me the story of each person, as well as he could remember. Bill Aaron had become Walker County'S Representative in Con- gress. Charlene Bennett and Edd Moles had finally tied the nlover's hitchn and were living in a new settlement called 'Possum Hollow' just beyond the Walker County line. Doris Burrow had established one of the state's leading millinery shops. J. C. Dailey had become All American quarterback and was taking a job as coach at Notre Dame. Harold B own had become Editor-in-Chief of the Jasper Tribune with Billy Busby as office boy. About that time Melvin's boss came by, ordering him back to work, who was none other than Dadie Gillamd. As Dadie and I walked into the dining room, I learned through him that Carlos Jefferson had teamed with Millie Powell for a T. V. contract with Lawassa Johnsey, Carlos's wife as sponsor. Doris Keeton had taken Mrs. Salmon's place as Chemistry, Science, and Biology Wizzard, at Curry. Virgil Sinyard had become head of the Civil Service Depart- ment in Washington. Frances Murray had become Post Mistress in Walker County's largest post pffice at Manchester, Alabama Lillian Davis had established a beauty saloon in downtown Jasper, and had become so successful, that all her competitors were forced to go out of business. Willodean Phillips and Iva Jean Key now owned the Shirley Ann Shop, which had become Alabama's largest dress shop for women. Betty Williams was now a private secretary for the President of The First National Bank in Birmingham. John H. Lee had become Secretary of the Treasury in Washington. Charles McCauley was Walker County's number one lawyer. Dr. Durward Moles had taken over the Walker County Hospital with Manda Ruth Willcutt as superintendent of nurses. Willie Whittemore now owned Jasper's largest nightclub with Lila Sanford as the county's favorite entertainer. Clarence Lee and Ralph McCauley had bought out Marigold Coal Mines, Ruby Short owned a dancing school in Birmingham. 4Damaris Skinner had become head bookkeeper for the T. C, I. Berta Meeks had a modeling job with Conover's Modeling Agency in New York. And that Roy Daniel and Jughead Hunter had put up the largest pool room in Jasper. As we finished eating I glanced at my watch and noticed it was time for my train. I bade my friends farewell and boarded the train. As I sank into the seat, I began to think back to my days at Curry. It's such a wonderful feeling to know you have such wonderful friends, from such a wonderful place. Barbara Bedsole Glass Prophet 38 . L A S T W I L L A N D T E S T A M E N T In the year of our Lord 1951, we the graduating class of Curry High School, being of sound mind and with no ill will toward any person, but with a spirit of giving in our hearts, do hereby make, publish and declare this to be our last will and testament. We bequeath these things to the following groups and persons: First: To the Sr. II class we bequeath our best wishes for continued success in high school. May it be possible for each and every one of you to receive your high school diploma next year. Second: To the Faculty of Curry High School we leave our best wishes and appreciation for what you have done for us. We, Berta Meeks and John H. Lee will our studious ways to Reba J.
