In September 1984, the majority of us arrived at Curry to begin our four years of college. Our orientation theme was Over the Rainbow. Our job was to reach the other side of the rainbow, to discover our goals and dreams so they could become reality. In titling this yearbook The Rainbow ' s End, we, the members of the yearbook staff, were not focusing on the end to those four years, or the final attainment of our goals and dreams, but rather on what is at the end of every rainbow — the symbolic pot of gold. We see that pot of gold as a symbol of all we have accomplished while here at Curry, as individual students and as a class. The pot of gold represents the achievement of our goals and our dreams; graduation and the end to four years of hard work and a lot of fun. But, at the same time, we see the pot of gold as a new beginning. As we leave Curry behind, we bring with us new found knowledge and the ability to apply it, treasured friends, and a myriad of memories, all of which will carry us through the next phase of our lives — leaving home, starting a new job, getting married, or continuing our education. Each beginning is made richer by the pot of gold from which we came. For us, and we hope for you — the graduates of 1988 — that the pot of gold will represent both an end and a beginning, because from every pot of gold a rainbow ends and a new one begins. Yeathook DeduuxfLoH, yi-u ' ' ' Warren Bazirgan Kay McCartney Communication: the exchange of ideas, thoughts, messages. Without the ability to impart what we know; to communicate through words or signals, we become isolated, lost in each of our own separate worlds, unable to share in someone else ' s wisdom. But through communication we share our knowledge and learn from each other. Two individuals have spent more than twenty years imparting information to the Curry Community and its surrounding towns. They have dedicated their time to inform each community of Curry ' s activities. Whether it be an individual student, faculty, or staff member ' s success or a sporting team ' s winning season or the renovation of the physical plant, Warren Bazirgan and Kay McCartney have written about it, communicating it to us through newspapers, press releases and campus newsletters. Through Kay ' s efforts in writing and producing the Curry Comment and Warren ' s production of the Update magazine, the Curry Community — faculty, administrators, students, and alumni — is kept abreast of what is happening at Curry. And through their press releases and news articles, they teach the surrounding towns about Curry, increasing its reputation with each story. The service Kay and Warren have provided is invaluable. It is with great pride and thanks that the Curry College Yearbook staff and the Class of 1988 dedicate this yearbook, The Rainbow ' s End to the public relations team of Kay McCartney and Warren Bazirgan. w WW :.iiMir r il The Year In Review Marine Lt. Col. Oliver L. North, was a key official in the plan to finance anti- government rebels in Nicaragua with money from arms sales to Iran. In testimony before the Iran-Contra hearings in Washington, North became somewhat of a celebrity. Television evangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker said farewell to the PTL ministry in March. Jim Bakker resigned after confessing to a sexual encounter with a young woman. Tammy Bakker bowed out of the broadcasts to undergo treatment for drug dependency. Democratic presidential candidate Gary Hart was forced to drop his bid for the presidency after it was reported that he was romantically involved with Donna Rice, a 29-year old aspiring actress and model from Miami. The Senate rejected President Reagan s nommation of Robert H. Bork to the Supreme Court by a 58-42 vote, which ended a long contentious debate over a judge alternately portrayed as a brilliant jurist and a dangerous extremist. An earthquake that measured 6.1 on the Richter scale hit Southern California in October. It was not a catastrophic quake, but the damage was extensive. In an effort to keep the Persian Gulf open to navigation, the United States began in July to escort vessels to protect them from Iran. In September the U.S. Navy blew up an Iranian ship that was caught laying mines in the Gulf. Several mines were confiscated. The Dow Jones industrial stock average dropped 508 points, the largest in history, on Monday, October 19. Some called it a crash, others called it a meltdown and others called it Black Monday. Whatever it was, it stripped $500 billion from the market value of U.S. securities. The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco celebrated its 50th birthday. About 250,000 people jammed onto the bridge for an anniversary walk across the span. Another 500,000 packed the bridge entrances but were denied access because the engineers feared the span could not support the weight. President and Mrs. Reagan greeted Pope Paul II when he arrived in Miami to begin a nine-city tour of the United States. In the six years since Americans first heard of a mysterious immunity-robbing disease from which no one recovers, AIDS has killed nearly 25,000 Americans, millions of dollars have poured into medical research and President Reagan has proclaimed the plague Public Health Enemy No. 1. ■' •■■■W ' FOR, THl Station Dare to do what you dream. Search your heart to know What you most desire; Then do it, For you can become By perseverance What you long to be. Dr. Samuel Silas Curry SSi0SB i ' ' flHi« ' MtUtryJ ■LOWEST FACULTY TO STRIKE ' ? ' : ' Arriving on campus in the Fall of 1987. students were met with the threat of a strike. Faculty members still had not signed a contract for the upcoming year — in fact they had been without one since early summer. The faculty protested with picket signs and handed out informational flyers on opening day. Their job action, in the eyes of many, was justified. Their complaints and demands legitimate. Curry faculty salaries were the lowest of all salaries at comparable colleges in Massachusetts. The faculty were asking for a 7.5 percent increase which would put their salary in the si j m median range. Tuition at Curry, since 1979, had risen 1 15 percent, but faculty salaries had only risen 57.5 percent during the same period. Concurrently, there had been an increase in the use of part-time faculty, so that in the Spring of 1987. 59 percent of the courses were taught by part-time faculty. Despite increased enrollment and a tuition increase of 7 percent for the 87-88 academic year, the administration ' s offer on August . 1, was a 3 percent salary increase. On September 4. this was changed to 5 percent, which would still not change the faculty ' s status as poorly paid faculty. On September 10, however, the administration reduced its offer of a salary increase back to 3 percent. They refused the faculty ' s request of 7.5 percent, claiming that college had no money to pay them that amount. Students rallied in support of the faculty, even protesting a board of trustees meeting with their own picket signs, (see following pages and letter from the S.G.A. President) Through everything the faculty persevered. Following extensive negotiations, the faculty union and the administration did meet with an agreement, settling the dispute and ending the threat of a strike. The faculty received a three year contract and a 5 percent raise for now. In the next two years, it was agreed that faculty salaries would be increased to a range comparable with other small colleges in Massachusetts. Speech presented to the Curry College Board of Trustees at a special meeting on September 17, 1987. Curry College, at its best, is one of the finest institutions in New England. We have the potential, but not the leadership. The leadership of our College may have had a dream, but that dream has faded. Fortunately, the students of Curry are not afraid to dream. We truly believe in the tradition of Dr. Samuel Silas Curry who said. Dare to do what you dream. Search your heart to know what you most desire to do; then do it, for you can become by perseverance what you long to be. We ' re here today to assure that our dreams become reality. In 1979, the students were promised growth in both image and revenue. To date, we have seen few of these promises realized. For past and present students of Curry College, this has proved to be of great frustration. Unfortunately, if a strike is to become unavoidable, it will ultimately be the students ' dream that we will see sacrificed. Last year saw a heightened awareness of our pitiful facilities both within the Curry Community and among the public at large. Curry had the dubious distinction of being cited by the Boston Globe Magazine as being the bad campus on the good site. First prize for major missed opportunity goes to Curry College in Milton, which placed relentlessly inept buildings on a wooded and hilly part of Massachusetts. This was echoed by the Accreditation Report of the past academic year. This is hardly the image that was promised to this school in 1979. This year we returned to face yet another crisis that threatens our dream. The one constant factor that has kept the dream alive, the faculty, has been jeopardized. They are being forced to choose between their commitment to teaching and an equitable salary. The students can easily empathize with the faculty ' s dilemma as we have been the victims of this administration stonewalling many times before. It is time for sacrifices to be made. Should it be the under paid faculty, the enduring student body, or is there another option? We are convinced that there is another option. This option involves the use of funds. We have proven that the funds have not been invested in the facilities. Obviously they have not gone to the faculty. Where are they? Take my advice, it ' s worth investigating. There is something seriously wrong when one administrator ' s expense account alone exceeds that of the starting salary of a faculty member. Over the last nine years, student tuition has increased 1 15% yet the students still live in shanty-town-like conditions while the President has two college vehicles at his personal disposal. This distribution of funds cannot be justified. Now is the time for change. A change in the facilities, a change in faculty working conditions, and most importantly, a change in leadership. With the proper leadership, this institution will be able to reach its full potential. By reaching for its potential and allowing old dreams to become realities, the students will be free to dare to dream new dreams. Michael F. Flaherty President, S.G.A. m  ' ■' ? ' m. Students gather outside the Alumni PubHc Relations building in order to demonstrate theirsupport of the faculty at Curry. Meeting in the Alumni Conference Room was President Boyle and members of the board of trustees. % ' ., v . ' ' ' Si ' ' f •  ' .f ! THE RAINBOW CONNECTION By Paul Williams and Kenny Ascher Why are there so many songs about rainbows. And what ' s on the other side? Rainbows are visions, but only illusions. And rainbows have nothing to hide So we ' ve been told, and some choose to believe it; I know they ' re wrong; wait and see. Someday we ' ll find it, the rainbow connections; The lovers, the dreamers, and me. Who said that ev ' ry wish would be heard and answered when wished on the morning star? Somebody thought of that, and someone believed it; Look what it ' s done so far. What ' s so amazing that keeps us star-gazing and what do we think we might see? Someday we ' ll find it, the rainbow connection; The lovers, the dreamers, and me. All of us under it ' s spell; We know that it ' s probably magic. Have you been half asleep and have you heard voices? I ' ve heard them calling my name. Is this the sweet sound that calls the young sailors? The voice might be one and the same. I ' ve heard it too many times to ignore it. It ' s something that I ' m s ' posed to be. Someday we ' ll find it, the rainbow connection; The lovers, the dreamers, and me. Billerica, MA 01821 Senior Week 1988 FOUR YEARS REMEMBERED ... By Colleen McCane Looking back at our four years at Curry College, we have all been faced with many changes. We began our freshman year in an institution quite different than we see today. Freshmen were all housed in two respective dorms, Mayflower and Lombard. We started our first year off with a bang — life was just one big party. There was never a dull moment. Evenings were filled with fire alarms making mid-night gatherings outside the dorm frequent events. Parties occurred about six out of the seven days in our week. Food fights accompanied class dinners, toilets were turned into incinerators and Main House was the hot spot on campus. Days never began before noon, and evenings didn ' t end until the weary hours of morning. Salmonella poisoning struck many, causing the cafeteria to be quarantined followed by remodeling. Freshman fifteen was the result of excess alcohol intake, mid-night munchies, and lazy attitudes. We ended the year having the best vacation of our lives. Sophomore year came and we no longer lived in two convenient dormitories. We were scattered all over, both on and off campus. Many people transferred to other schools or decided that college was not for them. We began doing our own things. New friendships were being sought. The drinking age became strictly enforced and we began to see more controlled party situations. We spent our weekends behind the rope in the now segregated cafeteria. We experienced the change of our class president. Simultaneously, changes were occurring all about campus. Faculty and administration said good-bye to old familiar faces and welcomed the new. We, therefore, had to adjust to the rules they brought with them. Main house was remodeled to accommodate more people. The result, the removal of the staircase that had once given Main House its identity. We, however adapted to the changes we were presented with. Leaving sophomore year behind, we prepared ourselves for our junior year (cont ' d on p. 193) -r sis (cont ' d from pg. 190) — a year that would again present us with more changes. The South Side of campus was welcomed home by men in white suits. Main House was condemned due to signs of asbestos. Numerous students were forced to spend the first two weeks of fall semester, 1986, at the Holiday Inn in Dedham. By the middle of the semester, the school had begun to grow academically as well as athletically. The football team, women ' s soccer, basketball, and tennis all held outstanding records for the year. Academically, our perspectives emerged into realities. It was the time to decide exactly what major we would pursue. Higher level courses, internships, and extensive studying began to occupy our time. Without realizing it, we were maturing with each passing day. We were shaping ourselves into professionals. All in all. our seriousness was not happening too soon. Senior year was here before we knew it. Another substantial change emerged. We came to realize that we only had one more year. New feelings and thoughts raced thro ugh our heads. How many credits did we need to graduate? Will we make 30 grand immediately after we depart from the grounds of Curry? Where will we reside? Will we marry? Will Mom and Dad still take care of us? The only answer for us was and is — only time will tell. At this time we also recognized the importance of our friendships. As Marc Coopersmith once stated, Curry means family. Senior year would present us with our reunions. Pub nights would bring the senior class together to reminisce about the past and encourage each other for the future. Somehow, this was our best support. As family members move away, marry, etc., we too would be experiencing this. The love, concern, and happiness for one another will always remain, nonetheless. Although uncertainties filled our lives, achievements were occurring likewise. Curry College, as a small institution, made its mark on the map. Once again, athletes were making outstanding records. Nursing students were completing three tiresome years of clinical. We all were accomplishing the tasks and goals we had set for ourselves four years ago. Today we look back at all those experiences, realizing that these are only but a few. Each individual here (cont ' d on p. 194) pr ' w cK e (cont ' d from p. 193) has memories only they can tell. Hopefully, I have included those that influenced each of us; the changes that have contributed in making us into the people we are today — wise, mature, and prepared to face the world. Good-bye to my Curry College family, best wishes for success and happiness in your future. Congratulations to all of you!!! But what is important to remember in each of those memories is the people with whom we shared them. Curry gave us the opportunity to grow and to learn. But it especially gave us friends — special people who became our second family; people who were there daily to share our laughter and our tears. The friends we made at Curry will last a lifetime with a Uttle bit of luck and a little bit of effort. A yearbook ' s goal is to tell a story through pictures. I hope the story The Rainbow ' s End tells is one of friends; one that will make you stop and think, Remember when . . . . To the Class of 1988, 1 wish you be best the world has to offer. Be happy and keep smiling! Best Wishes, Laurie A. Sullivan
