The class of 1976 has so honored Mrs, Barbara F. Pettingill. Ma Rett has been the Assistant to the Dean of Stu- dent Life for three years. Since coming to Curry sev- en years ago, Mrs. Pettingill was the force behind making Scholars B Hall co-ed, thus giving Curry its first co-ed residence. She has always been a familiar face on campus and a great inspiration in the progress of the College. For this we extend to her many thanks. The class of 1976 wishes Ma Rett the best of luck in the future and we hope she will always remember us, as we will never forget her. Greenburg Through Fire In Memory of Pamela Wrinch Where dunes resist the green eroding tides, Bayberries grey in winter, and winds whip grass Into submissi veness. Northeasters twist The pines, and only rock ' s immutable. This is a fitting place for Kore, wintering. To stand in brief return within Demeter ' s Home, to trace the rhythm of vo luted shells. The spiralling of time upon itself. Well might Demeter see with joy that daughter ' s Generosity and strength, her quick perceivance. Gentleness, as if she brought from deeper Halls some knowledge never pawned for power. But short was that reunion; without flowers. That final summering, as they, unknowing. Walked along the ocean shore to Eleusinian mysteries. Mute evergreens there stood aghast to watch The all-transforming flames reach toward the stars. We at these rites stand in the outer court And by the flaming toches, final flowers. We now renounce, before the Maker of the wind And rock, our first audacity— when we (Like Pluto and Demeter) presumed to call Her ours --and then the last audacity— When we presumed to know the seasons of the gods. And how, as then, at dawn the finite fire Pales in the great infinity of light. Eternally renewed. (In Greek mythology Kore is the daughter of the earth-goddess Demeter. While they are together earth flowers and is fruitful; but Pluto, god of the underworld, abducts Kore During her stay underground, the earth is winter-bound and barren; but Kore is allowed brief visits above ground, and these times of the reunions of Demeter and Kore are the fruitful, flowering seasons. The Greeks celebrated the mysteries of Demeter and Kore at Eleusis. There, after the participants had walked along the coast from Athens to Eleusis, the celebrations of the first night of the mysteries took place by torchlight outside the temple itself.) In four years here we have all been in to the city for many special events. And some of the benefits of Boston have made their way out to Curry. The next few pages are pictures compiled over the past four year period. For the most part they are of concerts in the Orpheum, Music Hall and Boston Garden. The others are celebities that have visited the radio station. When I first came to Curry I would have thought anyone was crazy if they said I would be the editor of the year- book. But I also did not know that when I was a fresh- man that the editor would walk up to me, hand me a camera and tell me to take pictures. So I learned. For the next two years I was the photography editor of the book, but still this was a far cry from being Editor-in- Chief. Finally, last year I was asked to take the job and must have refused ten times. But here I am today writing the Editor ' s message. 1 do not regret taking the job one bit. Sure, there were rough times but there was always someone to help out. We had some problems with our publisher and as a re- sult had to switch. I was pretty confused while all this was going on and have to thank Warren Bazirgan, our faculty advisor for his help in straightening out these business problems. Last year when Editor Pat Sheridan was telling me about a staff, she said that Ruth Burack would be there to help out with things that no one else wanted to do. She was right. Ruth took care of distributing the books and mailing them out which is nothing but a big pain, and not in the neck. She did some typing, ran errands, and came through with a few pleasant surprises like finding pictures that were desperately needed, Ruth will be the Editor next year and she is already as well organ- ized as I was going into my last month. Nancee Chalifour and Mary Carneiro were possibly my biggest helpers. Not only did they do their sections of the book, but they typed and typed more and helped in any other way they could. Jo-Anne Roderiques was our most experienced year- booker and we all were helped by some of her ideas. She was responsible for the Student Life section which is the largest section of the book. Steve Mechlinski was the Photography Editor, making sure that any event was covered by himself or someone else. Also of great assistance as far as photography is concerened was Charlie Flagg of Miller Studio. He did all our printing and processing as well as covering most of the important events. Finally, I would like to thank Chris Sheehan whc as Business Manager helped raise over $1,000.00. And Bob Murphy from American Publishers, who came and picked up the pieces of our publishing problems. I would like to explain a few things about this year ' s book. Everyone wants their book to be a little different so I decided to turn the book sideways and put he bind- ing on the short side. This can make for different lay- out ideas and I hope that we have done a good job with it. One thing that I do not like to see in a yearbook is a page loaded with pictures So we kept the layout fairly light, at least with the candids. I feel orettv much the same about copy. Many times yearbooks can be very corny if they are filled with copy, because you run out of things to say and how to say them. So we tried to keep it to a minimum. I hope you enjoy the book; I do. And take it for what it is, a book of pictures to be felt and remembered. Randy Kohlenberger Editor-in-Chief ny ..
