Booth 1898-1969 Views On Curry College, History and Teaching This is the last formal interview with a great professor and fine historian. We have changed this dedication little because he, we feel, would have wanted it this way. However, the fact that we have recently lost him makes his words that much more relevant. EDITOR: As a historian, what impact will the Apollo 11 space flight have on man- kind ? BOOTH: In my opinion it will reinforce a direction in which mankind has been mov- ing for many centuries. Mainly it will prove the largeness of the universe and give us a new concept of the earth ' s relationship to the other planets. EDITOR: What would you say is your greatest achievement in your lifetime? BOOTH: My greatest achievement is to have lived almost 50 years in the same com- munity, trying to hold friendships and over- come enemies and develop co-operative life. EDITOR: You have met many important people in your lifetime, who impressed you the most? BOOTH: This would have to be answered according to the different areas of life. In politics I think Winston Churchill; in reli- gion it would be a toss up between Albert Schweitzer and Mahatma Ghandi. But there are other areas, I was deeply impressed by Roland Hayes ' growth from slave birth in north Georgia to one of the greatest singers that the Western World has known. EDITOR: How would you sum up your years at Curry College? BOOTH: I have been exceptionally happy here. My years at Boston University had to do with professional training for religion and Philosophy. Here at the college level I ' m completely happy as I see a larger mixture of student background and a larger future of student hopes. EDITOR: What event in your lifetime stands out most prominently? BOOTH: I think the death of my son in battle would have to be the answer there. I don ' t know how I could evaluate the assas- sinations of the Kennedy ' s and Martin Lu- ther King. EDITOR: What do you think is the main reason for all the troubles we are having on so many college campuses today? BOOTH: The evolution of a totally new society. 1492-1914 are relative dates for a great flowering of Western European society. This is now over and new forms of life must be discovered. EDITOR: Do you think that students should have a greater say in college policy? BOOTH: Yes I do but I am not of the opin- ion that they should have too great a say in the evaluation of professors except as re- gards the actual classroom itself. EDITOR: Since you are a history professor, could you give reasons why anyone should take up history as a major? BOOTH: Yes I can very definitely. Many men have said it but Abraham Lincoln said it very clearly that if you don ' t know where you have been, you don ' t know where you are and if you don ' t know where you are you don ' t know which way to go. I do not con- ceive of history as giving us rules for the future, but I do conceive of history as the knowledge upon which those rules can be discovered. EDITOR: If you could change any historical event which event would you change and why? BOOTH: I think I would change the Cru- sades. I would like to have seen Islamic civilization and Christian civilization meet each other in conversation and co-operate rather than in bitter warfare which still haunts us. EDITOR: We know you are both a history professor and a minister, but if you could have chosen any other profession which profession would you have chosen and why? BOOTH: Some of my friends have suggested and I have always felt it keenly that per- haps I should have been on the stage as was the man for whom I am named. I would have been glad to have been an actor. EDITOR: What impact do you think the Vietnam war will have on our society? BOOTH: A very serious one. It is bringing into question the whole experience of vio- lence as a way to produce or halt social change and it is also elevating the citizenry of the United States to a sense that they should have more to say in governmental decisions than they now have. EDITOR: What future do you see for Curry College? BOOTH: I see a great future for the small college. We greatly need colleges to act as an intermediary between the school, high school, and graduate level. The only trouble is the financial cost to the student who attends these small colleges. STUDENT LIFE 91 V t ' fi - iif . S '  l8i( ' 5l  v , % . • ' : Registration Welcomes Freshman To Curry . . . This is the day when freshmen are given one of the most vital introductions to the school — REGISTRATION. In the chaotic spirit, the freshmen were introduced to Geology 101, Spanish 101, Introduction to Literature, and many others, only to find them closed. Waiting and frustration were the high points on September 16th. Everyone wondered if the IBM computer was designed to help or hinder their efforts. After that perfect schedule was slowly destroyed, the not so enthusiastic freshman student proceeded to the final table and gave up his impersonal IBM cards. Finally he found the way to the registrar ' s office and the piles of drop and add cards. He was trying to retrieve his origi nal schedule, which was located somewhere between program in and read out. OCTOBEI .v N A The October 15th Moratorium was hailed by the students of Curry College as a day of protest against our involvement in Vietnam. The students and faculty showed their support for the moratorium by attending speeches on the quadrangle. Those participating in the activities were: Dean Rose, who gave a prayer for the war dead, Mr. Hilyard, Mr. VanNeste, Mr. Mandell, Dr. Thrower, Dr. Condit, Mr. Schnieder, and a newspa- per editor from Cambridge, Mass. Speeches were given by stu- dents and afterwards a protest song was presented by the Curry College Choir. After the program Curry students gathered at the Boston Common with students from schools all over Boston. There were 100,000 people there of which Curry was a part. ilF X -4 S ' i:: ' . • - % ' jm T . turl t WtLCOMt PARENTS . M- - ' Curry College ' s 1969 Parents Weekend was a huge success, both informative and well planned. Appre- ciation should go to Linda Cudmore and Don Mitchell, co-chairmen of the weekend as well as the chairman, Mr. Warren Bazirgan, Jr. The college sponsored an open house in the Par- ents Lounge for both students and parents on Fri- day evening. The following day included registration and an informal coffee hour which was attended by students, parents, and faculty. At this time, Presi- dent John Hafer presented the future expectations of the college. A buffet luncheon in the Miller Gym was then shared by all. With great anticipation, everyone proceeded to their seats at the atheltic field to cheer Curry ' s football to victory. Our boys fought hard but bowed to Trenton State College, six to nine. The entertainment for Saturday evening was presented by the Curry College Theatas, who presented two one-act plays: Mrs. Dally Has A Lover, and Wisper Into My Good Ear. The conclusion of the three day Parents Weekend was a joint luncheon in the Miller Gym. The week- end proved to be most enjoyable for all who took part and one of which Curry College can be proud. CURRY COLLEGE After Frantic Preparation The Weekend Ends . . . MRS. DALLY HAS A Saturday nite, Curry College Thetas presented Mrs. Dally has a Lover, directed by David D. Kimball, as- sistant director Paul Alport. The cast was made up of Sandra Klibe who did a great job or portraying Mrs. Dally and Robert Lubell, who portrayed Mrs. Daily ' s lover, Frankie. The scene took place somewhere in a Brooklyn Apartment. The set design was done by Thomas Martin, Richard Rafferty and William Green. Homecoming Queen and her court. Parade, Floats, and a pre-game luncheon were but a few events to entertain students and greet alumni Friday, the start of Home- coming, 1969. Saturday afternoon students and alumni both filled Curry ' s new bleacher stands and were thrilled by the performance of a vic- torious Curry team against Nichols College. Valerie Carr, Class of 1970, reigned as Homecoming Queen over the weekend events. The post-game hours of reunion and the vic- tory celebrations set the spirit for Saturday evening entertain- ment. The entertainment was held at the Blue Hills Country Club. An unusually large crowd of students, faculty, and alumni alike showed up for Curry ' s best homecoming dance ever. They danced gayly to the sounds of Daddy Warbux, a fine, exuberant group. The feature group of the evening was Little Anthony and the Imperials. The crowd at the beginning sat calmly listening to their concert. By the time they sang the feature song from the production of Hair the crowd arose and really grooved to the electric excitement produced by Little Anthony. They gave a crowd raising, peace showing concert with songs like Going Out Of My Head, Tears On My Pillow, and It Hurts So Bad. Their final song of Exodus was a very appropriate finishing to the even- ing which exemplified the peace loving feeling of brotherhood which the world is striving for. November 2nd., 1969 at the Blue Hills Country Club will be a night that many will remember as a first in the many improve- ments to come to Curry, during its age of progress. 20 Miss Joyce Margolis last year ' s Homecoming Queen. Great co-operation, understanding, and a genuine effort was shown in the 1969 Curry College Thetas production of Ah, Wilderness, by Eugene O ' Neill. The performances were given on both April 29 and 30, in the Milton High School Auditorium. All in attendance walked away with praise for the high quality of the production. Gratitude should go to the fine student actors whose professional performances were marvelous, namely: David Kimball, in the role of Sid, Thomas Martin, as the father, and Sandy Klibe, as the sis- ter. Fine performances were also turned in by: Robert MacDonald, William Anderson, Pamela Van Over- walle, Lori Griffiths, Paul Watson, Steve Fernandas, Carol MacDonald, Steve Lundvall, Jody Colyer, Mark Surkis, Robert MacNeil, and Lynn Anderson. Among those also helping to make this production such a marvelous success were Kathleen B. A very informative evening was had by everyone who attended the lecture given by Winston Churchill, III in the Miller Field House. The topic of his speech was, The Continuing Middle East Crisis. In his speech he stressed the basic causes of the war, the reasons why the war started and what roles the big powers, namely Russia and the United States played in the conflict. Mr. Churchill, being an astute reporter and traveler in both countries before and after the war gave us an in depth look in to the troubles in the Middle East and then proceeded to map out alternatives to peace in the Middle East based on his knowledge obtained by speaking to both leaders and to the people involved in the war. All in all, Mr. Churchill ' s speech was well received, and a large and receptive crowd turned out for this first big event presented by the Curry College Cultural Affairs Committee. Dr. Pamela Wrinch introduces Mr. Winston Churchill, III. Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm spoke on The Social Revolution Cultural Affairs Forum Presented Many Interesting Speakers During the school year, the Cultural Affairs Committee of Curry College presented a total of seven speakers. The topics ranged from Ar- chaeology, Fantastic goings-on under the deep sea in the Bahamas, to talks on Russia and Southeast Asia. Most of these speakers brought with them documentary films for further enjoyment of the audiences. In all cases, the people who attended came away with increased knowledge and a well spent evening. The team, backed by rising support from the student body, fought for recognition in the New England Conference and tied for the title. Several precedents were set, such as the team winning its opening game, beating Maine Maritime for the first time in their ten year series. The secret of success was found, this year, in our new coach, William McKeown and his new assistant coach, Thomas Pi- leski and veteran coach William Lehman. The coaching staff received great support from an enthusias- tic and highly spirited team. They capitalized on the opposi- tion mistakes to win games and keep others close. There were no give aways this year, as has been categorized previous years. Curry won more games than ever before and any team who beat us worked hard for their win. Our offense was efficient and our often overwork defense brutal. If this season was an indicator, Curry football is in for much brighter future. ...■J i First Curry Victory In Ten Maine Maritime Mistakes Give Curry 12-0 Edge CASTINE, (AP)— Curry Col- lege capitalized on Maine Maritime Academy mistakes and spoiled a Parents Day football weekend by downing the Middies, 12-0, yesterday. The few bright spots on this year ' s poor season was the 5-2 win over Emerson College and the pldy of Freshman Bill MacDonald. Next season Curry skaters hope for a better year as well as an expanded schedule which, they hope will include more Boston area Col- leges. The Loneliest Position: Goalie 128 Fiost6r NAME POSITION M. B A S K E T B A L L Curry Colonels Improve The 1969-1970 Varsity Basketball team compiled a record of 8 wins and 15 losses. This record was possible because the quality of play was vastly im- proved over last year. The team best performance came in the second half of the season when the team managed in one stretch to win seven out of eight games. The rea- son for such a marked improvement came in the presence of center Jim Selesky a 6-5 235 pound transfer student and over all improved play of the team. Such veterans as Joe Cacciatore, John Mc- Namara, Gene Schaefer and Al Moulton all provided the spark for Curry ' s winning streak. Coach Donovan put together a fine team and next year ' s prospects includes three fine looking Freshman from this year ' s team. They are Steve Brown, Ray Richardson and Kevin Lalley. Also coming back will be Joe Cacciatore the team ' s lead- ing scorer. The only negative factor which Coach Donovan will have to face next year will be the loss of Senior Al Moulton, a fine two way performer and the team ' s best one-on-one player. Joseph Cacciatore shoots against Bridgewater St. Bottom Row: Glenn Jacobus, Joseph Cacciatore, Eugene Schaefer, Allan Moulton, Richard Reid, Graig Moore Top Row: Coach Joseph Donovan, John McNamara, Ted Jagger, Charlie Green, Ray Richardson, Russ Marion, Kevin Donnelly, Manager Alan Factor. SkSjA ' itii1.if ' lf!AJi , Baseball 1969 After getting off to a slow start, the Curry College baseball team retaliated by winning four consecu- tive games, thus achieving a two-fold task: one, a creditable 7-7 record which, two, prevented the team from succumbing to its first losing season in over twenty years. Helping Coach Vallely attain this year ' s record were: Frank Thomasino, the teams pitcher and catcher, Al Moulton, a curve-ball pitcher with a lot of potential, Jim McCaffery, first baseman and power-hitter, and Jake Jacobus, a hustling ball-player with a good batting average. The outlook for the 1970 season look bright if, according to Coach Vallely, we get a newcomer or two to battle for starting infield and outfield posi- tions. He also stated he could use a pitcher or two for the upcoming 1970 season. pm . « r S i .. Hit Run Score Concentration — The Keynote For Victory Some Plays Are Close Some Easy All-Important . . Coached by Willard Lee- man and captained by senior Bruce Hall, the team kept winning, defeated only by Nichols and the University of Maine at Portland. With the 1969 schedule completed, hopes are high for the 1970 season. Coach Leeman has high praise for such hopefuls as Richard Hebard, Porter Mul- ford, Steve Scott and John Lawton. Each staff member had a different idea of what should be in- cluded in each section, and the task of choosing the right picture for the right section, was a difficult one. I feel that working on this yearbook has been worthwhile not only for me, but for the staff as well. We have tried to present new ideas in many areas of the book, such as; senior pictures, opening sections and sports. We have also included more pictures in color than previous yearbooks, and have tried to put more emphasis on senior pictures and senior candid photos. Many people have played an important part in the production of this book. Vincent Cattat, Assistant Editor; Richard White, Associate Editor; Warren Bazirgan, Advisor and Mrs. Ruth McDonald, our Personal Secretary. To them, I wish to express my sincere appreciation. The 1970 Curryer has meant a great deal to me. The late hours, the rush to meet deadlines and the constant battle to rid the book of mistakes, demanded total involvement. However, it was all worth the effort to feel that the staff, as well as myself, have turned out the best Curiyer possible. Directory ABELES, MARTHA A. 131 WINIFRED AVE. WORCESTER, MASS.
