1042.557 BASKETBALL As Curlew ends the basketball season for the school year of 53-54, we give you the history of the games. As we look back in the score books we find the Cougars with 12 wins and 4 losses Total points for the season was 914 while the opposing teams scored 693. Curlew averaged 57 points a game and the opposing teams averaged 42. Dec. 4th the Cougars began their season by defeating Kettle Falls 55-39. On Dec. 8th they were defeated by Inchelium 51-44. The next game on Dec. llth the Cougars came back to beat Northport 73-33.The next game that the Cougars lost was with Hunters by a score of 59- 64. Then Curlew started a winning streack of 9 games and beating Hunters and Inchelium by a good margin in the return games. Feb. 19 1954 Curlew traveled to Waterville to attend the Douglas-Ferry Co. Tournament. The first night Curlew was outscored by Bridgeport by 8 points. The second night Mansfield outscored Curlew by 3 points. Starting lineup for Curlew Was: Barrick-center, Grumbach and Nichols forwards, and Borders and Oliver-guards. Substitutes were: Lindsey and Monnin-guards, Brown-guard and forward, Matthews-forward, and Croswell-center. FOOTBALL Cct. 9, 1953-Curlew 29 Republic 14 Oct. 16, 1953-Curlew 29 Valley 21 Oct. 23, 1953-Curlew 14 Republic 19 Curlew's starting lineup was: Hottell-center, Borders and Monnin-ends, Lindsey and Grumbach-halfbacks, Brixnerand Nichols-tackles. Substitutes were: Faulkner, George Lembcke, David Lembcke and Helphrey-tackles. Ziglar and Barkley-halfbacks, Heideman and Mathison-ends, and Nelson quarterback.
