Ll.. 10425. C4444 ,Maiory In 1942 four new first graders started to school here at Curlew. They were Faye Ells, Ronnie Borders, Gaye Faulkner, and Delbert Lind- sey. We were joined later by Mick Matthews, who moved here from Kent, Wash and started to school here in March of 1945. Our teacher for that first year was Mrs. Southon. Larry Brixner came here our second year and during our third year Bob Oliver started to school with us. Part way through the fourth grade, Gerry McQuinn joined us. BY the time we reached the Sth grade the years were rolling by much faster and it wasn't long before we were eight graders and about to v. YJ graduate. Mr. McKay was spending his first year here as our teacher and Mr. Berlie was on his second year as Superintendent of Curlew School. Graduation night came and at last after 8 long years we were in high school. Bill Monnin joined us as we began our high school career. The big- gest event of our Freshman year was our initiation by the Sophomores. We made our first attempt at making money in our Sophomore year when we put on the traditional Sophomore Hop. We didn't make too much on this dance as it didn't attract a very large crowd. The two most important events of our Junior year was the Junior- Senior Play and the Junior Prom. The title of the play was NHillbilly Weddinn and since there wasn't enough Juniors and Seniors to fill out the cast, some of the Sophomores donated their talents as extras. The Junior Prom was a success, also. The theme song was WDeep Pur- plen and Ruth Euerby's Orchestra from Grand Forks provided the music. We decorated in the colors of purple and gold. Queen of the prom was Charlotte Bardwell and since there were no boys in the class the other five girls acted as princesses. LaDonna Egner joined us for our Senior year, which was the busiest of all our school years. We began by putting on the Senior Play. It was entitled WGood Gracious Grandma'. The next event was our trip to Christian Studios in Spokane for our graduation pictures. While we were in Spokane we had the pleasure of seeing a basketball game be- tween Seattle University and Gonzaga. We put on our Senior Ball March 15th. in the school gym. The theme song was 'When Irish Eyes are Smilingn and the decorations were green and white. The year continued to pass swiftly on, and at last graduation night was here. fx . :Q ' I ,, F. On May 28th, 1954, nine proud seniors accepted their diplomas and set off into the different directions that their work took them. Shortly before they left they all agreed to meet again at their spot where they held many memories, good old Curlew High School. To them the 10 years that was agreed on seemed like a long time, but the years flew by and in no time it was time to meet again. As the bells tolled out the first is just arriving. Who in the, oh yes it's Larry Brixner. Larry, you know, is now the prosperous owner of a racing track down in California, and has a very famous horse who is now the world'e champion racer. Next is Gerry McQuinn who lives near Curlew, on a small ranch with her husband and 4 small children. Of course you all remember way back in '54 when she switched names and became Mrs. Green. She claims that they have finally completed their log house. What! we hear footsteps outside, yepg just as we thought, old prize fighter himself, Delbert Lindsey. Of Course you all know that he won the heavyweight title last August, and he says that he thinks that he can hold it for just as long as that old timer named ----- 'Joe Louis' did. We all think you can too. Good Luck, Delbert. About now the voices of Bill Monnin and Ronnie Borders are heard. Hum-m-m there seems to be a third person, yep! presenting the one and only, the great Mick Matthews. It seems that Mick flew Ronnie and Bill in on his new jet plane. He is, you all know, a very famous ac- cordion player in New York. You can hear him on the radio every night at 8:00 P.M. and see him every Sat. night on television on channel 71. Ronnie is a 7-star general leo he says? in the army, and Bill is one of the scientists who are furthering the progress on how to speed up Model A Fords. Next to arrive in an airplane is Faye Ells. She is flying her own plane called the 'Hook-um-cow', She tells us her trip was lovely. She came all the way from Guatemala where she and her husband own a large cattle ranch. She tells us they have introduced a new breed of cattle. Next is Bob Oliver. Bob is now a jet pilot and has just finished flying 16 missions over Moscow. Bob is now stationed at Curlew Air Force Base teaching aeronautics on the side. Last of all but not least is LaDonna Egner, or is it Hottell, who has just driven up in one of her many Jaguars'. It seems that she has made a wondrous paradise out of Death Valley, which they have turned into the biggest horse ranch in the world. Since all the seniors have now arrived they settle down and talk about many old times and soon it is time to go again out into this world of many things. They started out right by trouncing Kettle Falls with a score of 43-28. With hopes high they then traveled to Inchelium. It was anoth- er victory with a resulting score of 41-18. The following game was with Northport. This was the first time the Curlew girls really had to play ball. The score was tied 20-20 with four minutes left to play. Then Curlew with a good offense and de- fense made four baskets in succession while Northport was held to one free throw, making the final score 28-21. The closest game of the season was against Grand Forks at Grand- Forks. It was a very hard game for the Curlew girls because Grand Forks plays boy's rules. Curlew was ahead at the half but by the third quarter Grand Forks had pulled ahead. However Curlew managed to drag out a victory by the scant margin of one point. The final score was 27-26. Kettle Falls was the next team to be defeated by Curlew.
