Led by seven Pep-girls, who have organized a fabulous pep club, school spirit is spread throughout our school. The Thirties, Varsity, and Song-girls lead us at our games. On Fridays the classes form a huge white swell in the gym. Yelling loud and clear, the separate classes compete for the spirit trophy. At the games, the classes join in as a whole, roaring with enthusiasm tor the team. The result ot these sounds ot spirit has been the district spirit trophy, Cupertino truly has the sound of spirit. . 560 4 J T. 6530 . Xl KO .. Achieving an education is a goal that each CHS student works toward. Some students prepare themselves tor college and others prepare themselves to plunge into the business world directly from high school. As Mr. Fer- nandez says, llExcellence in education is a goal set by everyone at CHS. Our students rate high in the National Merit Scholarship tests and many participate in our fine California Scholarship Federation. We are privileged to have a fine faculty-uthe cream of the crop. lnspirational instructors, the urge to learn, and determination to reach our goals give Cupertino a llsound of learn- ing. Pond Vice President Fremont Union High School District Board We all can be proud ot our district high schools and the record they have made this year in academic and sports achievements. Competitive spirit among students of each school has caused a rise in standards among all members ot our district school l'tamily, which now has five members with the opening of Lynbrook. Meanwhile, we are planning a sixth high school to serve our student population which neared l0,000 this year and will top it next fall. We are pleased with your enthusiasm for the modern instructional methods we have installed to help you compete with graduates of other districts. The excellent reports we have from our graduates indicate that you are making good use ot your educational opportunities. Keep up the good work! A. C. Stevens Superintendent Mrs. Helene H. This class, the largest and the best faccording to its more than 700 mem- bersl has already made its mark on CHS. As the nearest rivals to the Senior class, they are constantly urging the whole student body on to new heights in spirit and creativity. Many new and enthusiastic plans for the future are a constant challenge to other classes. Plans to win the spirit trophy and the Powder Puff force all rivals to put forth extra effort in order to be the best. lf they raise 53,500 by the end of their Junior year and thus become the first class with no charges for Senior activities, you can depend on the popu- larity and continuation of this utradi- tion . Exchange Programs Broaden This year Seiia Elisabet Levo brought a bit of Finland to Cupertino. Her home is Helsinki, but this year she lived with Barbara Crist's family, Beneath Seiia's quiet exterior and shy smile is an energetic, active girl, who gave people opportuni- ties to know her through her participation in many activities. Our Swiss visitor, Hans Rudolf Peter, came to us from Zurich, Switzerland. He lived in San Jose this year with Don French. He brought enthusiasm to many various activities. We will always remember Hans for his wonderful character-his ambition, his sense of humor, and his integrity. Mr. Anthony Jenkins exchanged this year with Mr. Sezak to teach Russian and German. His home is in Birmingham, England. During his year here he gave enjoyable speeches to varied groups and won many friends that way. Those students who were fortunate enough to have Mr. Jenkins as a teacher will never forget his smile, his subtle wit, and his skill as a teacher. Besides hosting foreign visitors at Cupertino, we sent several representatives abroad. One of these was Randy Hornor, who lived for a year in Capetown, South Africa. Randy came back with not only a great many interesting relics and stories, but also a greater understanding of a society which is very different from ours, and he shared these with us. Toni Lovaglia spent a part of the summer of '65 in Copertino, Italy. Pam Applegate spent the year of '65-'66 in Brazil. 31 ar!! 1 Z .ig mf Mx ig gm iw Q? H. S. is found in our activities, the fringe around Cupertino's core ot academic achievement. During the year active sounds can be heard at dances, clubs, musicals, and plays. Among our dances are Proms, Balls, and holiday specials. Service, Language, and Scholastic clubs are active the whole year. Our students entertain in many ways, from the modern dance show, uOld Wine and New Bottles , to Shakespeare's llMerchant ot Venice . Many students also contribute their time and talent to the Senior Jubilee as well as assemblies ot all kinds. Cupertino also has an active sports pro- gram, with active leaders arousing spirit and enthusiasm. C. H. S. has clubs, sports, government, and activities of all kinds to attract every inter- ested Pioneer. These priceless moments in high school become as much a part of Cupertino as academic achievement. Cleats rattle on the pavement on the way to football practice. Water polo and cross country coaches look for promising newcomers. Opening games temper optimism and hard work begins. Outside the sounds of victory and defeat are heard thundering through the stands. As the days shorten and the temperature drops, the sounds of competition move indoors to the gym and exercise room. Grunts and groans can be heard coming from wrestling practice and the gymnasium echoes with the sound of basketball practice. The gym swells with the sounds of students cheering their team to victory. With the warmer weather the spirit once again moves outdoors. Splashing from the pool and the crack of the baseball bat are familiar sounds, reminding us that spring has come. Track meets open and boys meet the challenge with energy and endurance. The variety of sports that are offered all year round keep the sound of competition alive at Cupertino. O O Q il- . .g .. 5 . 1 fs ... It was the first victorious Homecoming game in the school's history. The readiustment of the Pioneer backtield throughout the season didn't seem to solve the problem ot moving the pigskin. The shitting of a Senior line to a Junior line still lett the team winless for the remainder of the season, We will be depending on the experienced Juniors next year to come through for a winning season. The Varsity will also be weltoming the Sophomore stand-outs from the Frosh-Soph team. Paul Thatcher, Barry Burkey, and Bob Landreth were selected as All-SCVAL Honorable Mention. O Hard Work Pays Off For Harriers Cupertino, suddenly coming into the scene this year with numerous exhibits of fortitude, blazed the way to a second- place finish in the Santa Clara Valley League and Central Coast Finals. But, the l'clincher forthe squad was its tive-man ten-mile clocking of 49:1 l, which when compared with other top U.S. squads, ranked the team sixth. Chuck Menz 9:40, Gary Hanson 9:42, Rick Rentschler 9:43, Larry Rentschler 9:55, and Jerry Tompsett 10:1 l were the formidable five. The JV squad proved second best in the Santa Clara Valley. Tom Young, Lynn MonSanto, Art Kipperman, and Herb Weeks, were among the top lO individuals in the SCVAL. The Sophs recorded a mediocre season. The team had its high moments, such as a 3rd place in the Large School Division at the 6th Annual Terra Nova Invitational. The MVP and captain, Larry Rentschler led the team to a fourth place finish in the SCVAL Finals. The Frosh, although not really a pre-season threat, captured third place in the district finals. Bill Horan garnered MVP honors, recording the season's fastest two-mile clocking of 'l l:l3. 166 K T file if M rf ,ix i s , T' ii ' L if 2, .div The JV's ai resi.
