GEORGE FERNANDEZ Principal Mr. Fernandez lends a hond. This yearbook is a resume of what has happened during the I964-1965 school year. I know all students will be setting new goals for next year and I hope you plan realistic goals. We all inherit innate ability to learn, but what we learn, how much we learn, and how well we learn is entirely up to each of us. Every man is given a mind to think, to learn, to choose and to get full benefits of the experience of others, Individual knowl- edge, however, is not a part of this heritage. It is something that every man must acquire for himself. It is not I. Q., it is I will. May this yearbook be a reminder of the goals you have achieved and the friends you have acquired. I challenge all of you to explore and keep keenly aware of your responsibilities to yourselves, your school, your family, your community and your nation. Cupertino High's Service Organizations Cupertino High service clubs include All-American Girls, Altruettes, CHSS, lnteract, and Key Club. All of these clubs serve at school functions, and many of them serve the community as well. Every year, Key Club holds a Christmas drive to collect canned goods for needy families in the area. Interact held a Christmas hootenanny, and the proceeds went to help the needy people of this area. The newly organized All-American Girls collected toys during the Christ- mas season, and Altruettes sold fuzzies to accumulate money for scholarships. CHSS serves at many school functions, including serving at dinners and making the arbors for graduation. Many clubs remain active in the community throughout the summer. In order to be a mem- ber of one of these service clubs, students must meet certain qualifications, and then current members vote on the applicants. New members are usually taken twice a year. C.H.S. Varsity Basketball The Pioneers opened the season with 9 non-league wins and a close loss to Fremont in the Sunnyvale Tournament. In the seasons opener, the Homestead team rolled over Cupertino 43-34, Seven days more and the Pioneers were O-2, victims of Los Altos. Then, the seem- ingly down and out Pioneer squad hit Mt, View with blood in their eyes and victoreol by T3 points, Then Sunnyvale waltzed onto the floor and tripped, as Cupertino ran oft a 7 point lead. Retaining their balance, Sunnyvale brought the score even, and the battle went down to the wire. Final score: Sunnyvale 43, Cupertino 41. With regained confidence, Cupertino downed Santa Clara 50-43. In the next two weeks, Awalt and Buchser tell to the Pioneers, and Fremont loomed one week away. This contest turned out to be much like Sunnyvale, and weary from a two point loss to the Indians, the Pioneers were downed by Wilcox in their finale, grabbing 5th spot in the league. 138 Doug McCune shoots under the basket as Ron LaRufta and Gary DeBoer move in for the rebound.
