The girls how they cheered For the star of the team Catching the passes Of forever eighteen. Oh how our hearts Just opened up and cried On that terrible morning We found out you'd died. The tears like rivers Down our faces did stream For the boy who would never Finish being eighteen. We dedicate this book to Steve Bryant: Forever Eighteen by Denise Moore Grammer And on the day That we laid you to rest, The skies opened up And tried their best To cry out their sorrows To us it did seem For the boy who died At only eighteen. And then when we'd cried And our hearts were all drained The glorious sun shown And dried up the rain. Giving us the promise That we'd see you again. Thank you, Dear God For that shining Son Who gave us the promise That death has not won. See you in heaven, Steve, And when we get there it'l1 seem Like only yesterday When we were all eighteen. And when time starts to turn Our hair into grey We'll still be thinking Every day Of the boy who's face Just seemed to beam With the joy and happiness Of being eighteen. 'GQ 2 Born May 9, 1969 Died Sept. 26, 1987 All of us who knew Steve remember him in our own way. The student body participated in a ceremony on the football field where Steve's number was retired for the season. But there are other memories of Steve, as well. Come in, come in . . . n 3 School started in Cumby with shiny floors and 2 new administrators. The students were ready, and so began the year ofthe '87 -'88 seniors. A wild energy came with the beginning ofthe football season, and the cheerleaders and drill team were responsible for school spirit. Too soon, the football season was over - homecoming king and queen were crowned, and the seniors were honored with a special ceremony because this was their last Uhr If E JN' , We ':.: fe B j Q A. lil -Y season with Cumby High. In October, the annual carnival proved to be a big success for the PTO. One sad note marred the year when we lost one of our own, Steve Bryant. With full hearts we said good-bye to Steve. D 0 O I This was the year we lost football one month and got it back the next. Things were never dull in the '87-'88 year. To encourage attendance, the new administration decided on cash bonuses - Sharon Gilchrest won xt 5 ,f-f- ' Q S100.00. Several fads dominated the year. One was puff paint. Faces and words were puffed on shirts, shoes, and pants. All ages were outside during lunch but the high school boys started an unusual fad', - they had a wild desire for girl's purses. Basketball season started as energetically as the football season did. The teams played hard, and the season ended with Brenda Anderwald being chosen as the basketball queen and Raymon Green as the beau. Christmas was ushered in with the Cumby Christmas parade, class parties, and then we were out for the holidays. The biggest surprise of the year came in January - it snowed! - and we missed several days of school. Two roads diverged in a wood . . I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. Every spring brings the Jr.fSr. Prom and baseball. The baseball team ended the season 2nd in District. Two traditions for the end of the year are Black Jack Grove day, and the E.T. sport's competition for the elementary. On May 26th the 8th grade had its graduation ceremony, and on May 27th the 87-88 Seniors walked across the gym floor in cap and gown. By the end of the year, everyone was tiredg the teachers were still trying to smile but they had ceased to care about anything iincluding their appearance - bottom rightj except getting out of school. The last day of the year was ALMOST uneventful. One teacher did discover his car looking a little differently in the afternoon than when he parked it that morning fbottom middleb. We all learned a lot this year, especially those of us on the annual staff. We have finally learned how to spell our new superintendent's name - ALLcorn. And one was hammered in the ground by many a jolt and jar, some fragments never have been found, they flew away so far. They found a stack of tawny hair, some fourteen cubits high, it was the halfback, lying there, where he had crawled to die. They placed the pieces on a door, and from the crimson field, that hero then they gently bore, like soldier on his shield. The surgeon toiled the livelong night above the gory wreck, he got the ribs adjusted right, the wishbone and the neck. He soldered on the ears and toes, and got the spine in place, and fixed a guttapercha nose upon the mangled face. And then he washed his hands and said: 'Tm glad that task is donelv The halfback raised his fractured head and cried: I call this fun! Congratulations to Julie Smith who had a beautiful little girl not long after this picture was taken. I A principal has many duties, but I wonder if Mr. Crawford knew that taking lunch would be one of his. While Mr. Crawford slaved away at the table, Bill Jenkins had the right idea. Cook your own, outside, while sitting in a chair. One place you're likely to find a number of teachers is at the weekly pep rallies during football season.
