We have seen here the scholarly aspects of life, in a youthful atmosphere, coupled with our development of a society by which to be accepted, reiected, or to dis- card as individuals. To us, it has been the final and least accessible stepping stone in a creek, one which we have finally attained, and when we gain it, we realize that now we face a more difficult task - that of crossing the river life. But with the assimilation of honesty and sportsmanship, we have enabled ourselves to evaluate situations with relative accuracy, retaining a standard of truth in introspect. When we created this introspective honesty, we became the masters of our theme for this Argus - understanding. Should we live as indicated by this designed code, as we well may, our lives in the future will undoubtedly present themselves with ioys and disappointments comparable to those we have thus encountered. For this reason, Cumberland Valley, to date, is the key to the patterr of life we have adopted - a combination of honesty, iustice, anc tolerance - a stepping stone to better understanding. - - Edwin Delattre 4 . 1 Q 55 wwf E: WR QQ N T- I 5? Hold if! s-T3 sf U25 Four whistles - a flash of red - a good solid down beat - and you can be sure C.V.'s Marching Band is around. Be A Band Booster was a popular phrase as football season got under way. The CV. Marching Band participated at all football games, and presented six entirely different half-time shows. The band was under the direction of DeWitt P. Zuse, assisted by James D. Tyson and under the capable leadership of Miss Karyl Packer. The band marched in three Halloween parades including the Han- over Competition in which they placed third among twenty-three other participating bands. The Harrisburg Band Parade is an annual competition parade held in December. Both Band and C-Vettes-marched away with Superior Ratings 4- the highest rating attainable. A trophy for the band with the highest number of points, won by C.D. was missed by C.V. by iust four-tenths of a point. The Marching Band also received an invitation to the Pennsylvania Gubernatorial Inaugural Parade, however this parade was cancelled due to rain and snow. A candy drive and marchigras were two very profitable money raisers held during the year. Last but by no means least, was the Virginia Apple Blossom Parade which was anxiously awaited by all Band personnel. It is a two day trip with lots of marching and lots of fun - the big event for C.V.'s Marching Band. 96 Mr. Zuse, Directory Mr. Tyson, Assistant Director. C-xl go . The high flying Eagles came through in fine style again this year and came up with a very successful season. The team was called, by many, a cinderella squad. It had a lack of returning talent and was plagued by iniuries from the start. Despite these things the determination of the squad brought it Through. We quote a neighboring coach when we say, The team is the scrappiest bunch of boys around. Eppley Willow Mill Park 06 A STU RDY LAD A sturdy lad was fallen in our midst, And left us sad, bereft of any ioy. Though he was but by fourteen summers blest, The shades are drawn about our noble boy. The sorrow and the loss 'Tis ours to feel Is very hard for us to contemplate, But then the gain to mighty Heaven's meal In fullest measure seems to compensate. Through faith we see beyond the darkest shades To find him bright and happy by God's side-, And then the pain of all bereavement fades To know that all these joys to him betide. - Written in fond memory of Ray Knisely by Ivan W. Fritz 640740305 Zaqf' PRIDE OF THE HEARTS OF HER PEOPLE Pride of the hearts of her people, Jean Ann, so sweet and so frail, Dropped, like the flower from earth's bosom, And rooted, where life cannot fail. She's gone on a wonderful iourney To a land, that is fairer than day. She's rested this life's weary burdens, The Angels have bourne her away. A spirit, so good and so patient, Like sweetest of flowers perfume, Must have come, like an Angel, among us, To be called unto heaven to bloom. Pride of the hearts of her people, Jean Ann ! She waits over there, Looking this way to her loved ones, Looking from heaven, so fair. - Written in fond memory of Jean Ann Slaybaugh by lvan Fritz 4 QT ik, Lui. . F- X 5.f,, A ' ' S531 - 5.
