THE LIFE OF A SCI-IOLAR A little boy, a child yet Was peeping through an open door. Inside the room a teacher sat Amidst forgotten dusty lore. Beginning there, the child grew In mind, in heightg forgetting toys. He learned, discovered, wept and knew, Of life, its ways, its tears, and joys. Come in, my love, and she drew near, Now don't you cry, l'm not that cruel! For this is your room now, my dear, For this is your first day at school. And then, as time recast the mold That formed his life, an hour was dear And time was twain, a summers gold And then . . . a longer winter drear. There came a change, now, in his life For from a sheltered one room class He stepped into a freshman's life With hopes, and dreams, and then a lass But now the storm was gathering fast, The tribes came, the world was cupped And in the pool there formed, was cast A drowning boy, now growing up. A Sophomore finds school means good times Witli dance, and song, a whole new card It dealt, and with it comes the sign Of parting with the scholar's garb. A Junior lives and dies with tears And sorrows that he cannot bear. He's driven, worked, and faced with fears And hate till he no longer cares. A Senior's life is full enough Of all the good and joyous things. And he is happy, till his bluff Is called by graduation stings. The life is done, now, that you've known, And all your life you've fought the ban Of life forbade, but now alone . . . You have your life, you are now a man -by PHIL REPLOGLE
