Gouteuts F rontispiece Title Foreword Dedication Senior Pictures Senior Activities Administration and Faculty Underclassmen Activities Argus Sweetheart Sports Advertisements Argus at Ci IA Argus was a monster of Greek mythology, Who had the sight of a hundred spies. Who was part of Queen Hera's cosmology, To check up on King Zeus' naughty eyes. One day Queen Hera noticed a peculiar low lying cloud, That stood out in a field of sunshine Thinking only of her dignity, she rushed to that gaseous declivity. To her wondering suspicious eyes she found King Zeus with only a heifer that was bound. But clever Hera was not so easily tricked, For she saw through that heifer disguise but quick, To find the soul not a heifer known to us But the soul of beautiful Io, daughter of Inachus Zeus was not his usual self, for wise Hera took the heifer for herself, So to guard the disguised beautiful maid, Hera assigned Argus whose hundred eyes could not be betrayed. Mighty Zeus thwarted by Io's plight, Sent cunning Mercury in swift flight. Now Mercury knew his many talents And his skills were known among gallants. But he would not set his sights To match Argus in strength or sleepless nights. So he lulled to sleep each of the hundred And as he struck off the head, it thundered. Beautiful Io was set free of course Was sent off by Zeus on a far away course. Poor, poor, poor, Argus seemed to have met his end, But clever Hera thought too much of the monster friend She scattered his eyes in the peacock's tail Where they can be found by anyone without fail. Time, time, how rapid and so fast, Argus is now just a figment of the bygone past. And so I come to the part I like best, Where we tell you about C. V. and Argus' new test Argus has been transformed by time But in this era he is no longer connected with crime He is now a guide and protector at C. V. for '58 Where he was chosen by the seniors to prosper their fate There's a hundred seniors in the class of '58 That means Argus will have an eye on you, old mate. But I guess that's why we chose him to lead us and all that For we knew that we would never, never be back. -by WILLIAM A. CLEMENTSON -. A. -+ as-as 3 It is in deepest gratitude that we, the class of 1958, dedicate this yearbook to our principal, Mr. Charles R. Slaybaugh, who has guided us since the opening of the new Cumberland Valley High School four years ago. We appreciate his faith in the worth of the individual student, as he has shown by his attention to the problems of each student. His time was ours when in need. He was never too busy to stop in the halls to talk of our school and personal problems. He has respected our opinions, although his own may have been different. He has re- peatedly demonstrated his confidence in student govern- ment by giving it his whole-hearted support. He has never failed to give full recognition to an individual or a group for work well-done. Through his dedication to the task of preparing us to be useful and intelligent citizens, may each of us be in- fluenced by his example in the life ahead of us. Beginning there, the child grew In mind, in heightg forgetting toys. He learned, discovered, wept and knew, Of life, its ways, its tears, and joys. Come in, my love, and she drew near, Now don't you cry, l'm not that cruel! For this is your room now, my dear, For this is your first day at school. And then, as time recast the mold That formed his life, an hour was dear And time was twain, a summers gold And then . . . a longer winter drear. There came a change, now, in his life For from a sheltered one room class He stepped into a freshman's life With hopes, and dreams, and then a lass But now the storm was gathering fast, The tribes came, the world was cupped And in the pool there formed, was cast A drowning boy, now growing up. A Sophomore finds school means good times Witli dance, and song, a whole new card It dealt, and with it comes the sign Of parting with the scholar's garb. A Junior lives and dies with tears And sorrows that he cannot bear. He's driven, worked, and faced with fears And hate till he no longer cares. A Senior's life is full enough Of all the good and joyous things. And he is happy, till his bluff Is called by graduation stings. The life is done, now, that you've known, And all your life you've fought the ban Of life forbade, but now alone . . . You have your life, you are now a man -by PHIL REPLOGLE 1 r 1:0062 agp AwggL67y00 X 0'b0 00K 0 foo 5. This year our great Argus of many eyes saw a clear picture of our first winning season. The Eagles came through with spectacular play and outstanding team- work of the kind that few schools could overcome. Coach Sanzotto's high-flying team k n o c k e d over teams such as Delone, Camp Hill, and more. When our team was fighting sickness, the ones that remained fought with a ferocity that left our opponents gasping. The Eagles had a desire to win, win, win. The team, spearheaded by the Senior mem- bers and backed by a loyal group of fans, has shown a definite desire to be best. With hard work and that same desire to win our future teams can be even bet- ter. Thus the Argus forecasts. Susquehamm game . . . A big game for the Eagles who beat a higher rated team.
